I've used the Lais 860019 in the end, as per Butler Henderson above. As I said, I tried several decoders to try and get the upper lights and step lights to work, but they never did. So, I get the Lais 860019 and everything worked first time, I'm glad to say. The body now flies off it's been off and on that many times!

Stupid question time again, but where did you get the decoder as I’ve tried looking it up and I can’t find anyone who stocks it.

Caroline on track inspection work today, pushed by Accurascale 37419. Runs really well, but have had to do a few mods to get things running like this. I've taken out the kinetic coupling mechanism both ends. Isolated the pads at one end of the circuit board, so there's no "engine end" lights on at all. I tried ESU Lokpilot, Imperium 6 and 8 output decoders and had no joy with any of them when trying to get the lights working. Purchased the Lais decoder as recommended on here and all worked straight away.

Can I ask, what model number Lais decoder are you using as I think I’ll use that instead of struggling with a Dapol Imperium.  Many thanks

Are all 21 pins perfectly aligned - they can easilly get bent which means  a decoder or blanking plug will not fit properly - check that all 21 pins are visible in the decoders sockets.

I checked all the pins, and they are all perfectly aligned but I’ve since contacted @Revolution Ben and he’s suggested that I contact support for help, which I will do.

The socket on the Imperium/Lais decoders is a bit tight, compounded by the location of the socket on Caroline's PCB not having anything behind it to apply pressure to.

Best option is probably remove the PCB then you should be able to get enough pressure to get the decoder onto the pins.

Thanks for the suggestion but I’m worried that if I start disassembling the model, am I at risk of invalidating any warranty.  I’ve noticed that the screw in the middle of the roof has fallen out and can’t be put back in, another reason for not disassembling the model.

I just feel that it would have been better had there been a option to buy the model DCC fitted

  5. I'm a little dismayed as I tried fitting a Dapol Imperium decoder and surprised that the decoder won't stay located on the pins.  When I turn it over to put the body back on, and the decoder just falls off.  Wondering if it's the decoder, I tried a different decoder and I've now got the same problem with the blanking plate, so I was wondering if anyone else is having the same issues?  And if they have and resolved it, can they let me know.

Some pics of the Boston traffic in 2008-10, note the one via Lincoln Dec 2008 which may have been to Immingham, although it may have run via The Joint to Sleaford. Mainly Colas, but 56303 when it first got DCR green also put in an appearance. Usual loaded to 20 IHAs...

That will do me, I’ve been hoping this wagon will be produced for my Sleaford East Junction layout, so I can backdate my Boston steel train from DB Cargo and 21 BYA’s to when Colas ran the train. Uber excited about this announcement.

Re jools1959 comment of a few hours ago, I think Hornby have the Black 5 covered with their forthcoming model. The first photos appeared in Engine Shed a couple of days ago

I’ll be very interested in seeing the new Hornby Black 5, but Hornby have a habit of falling at the last fence with silly mistakes, livery errors etc, so I’m going to wait until the trade have reviewed it.  if it’s the mutts nuts, then their onto a winner.

  8. i have to agree with others about a retooled Jubilee as the Bachmann version is good, but now very much showing it's age, same applies to the rebuilt MN.  Rather than Duke of Gloucester, surely a Britannia must be a sure fire winner as well a Black 5, though I have heard that if Ellis Clarke's O gauge version sells well, he might invest in a OO scale one, but you know what the jungle drums are like in this hobby.

There is a colas working with slurry wagons to and from Workington but other than the DRS stuff and one offs like the weedsprayer nothing that I’m aware of

workinfton steel works is long gone, wouldn’t even know it was there anymore!

there is the Dalston tanks but that only goes just outside carlisle

Thanks @big jim, the video clip is most useful and as for the steel train, I’ll apply some modelling licence and it’s a new steel flow, originating in the docks.

  10. Having recently purchased several Accurascale Class 37/4’s and Bachmann DRS Mk2f’s, I’ve moved my still not started layout from Lincolnshire to the Cumbrian coast line.

Apart from the nukes with their flasks, PFA’s with low level waste containers, is their any other regular freight workings over the line?

I’m tempted to apply some modellers licence as I have 16 BYA’s which I was going to use for a Boston steel train, and I was wondering if I could use them on a steel train to/from Workington steel plant (if it’s still working) or the docks.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Don't worry, Gareth has already lined up the next 6 years or so of regular releases, there is no reason to have to compromise as we will get to every variant and region as fast as we can :)

I was told by one of your guys awhile ago (can’t say who as I don’t know who it was, but it wasn’t Fran) that the art work for most, if not all of the Scottish Class 37’s had been done and they will be drip fed into production to those eager for those Class 37’s based north of the border, especially those based at Inverness over the next few years.

All my fault I'm afraid.  Someone on SNCF contacted me and asked if I could let him have some Class 37s on extended hire as he'd heard that I was hiring them out.    But I very quickly sussed out that he wanted more than I was able to let him have and it would be for an extended period plus once he'd told me why he wanted them I was not prepared to let him have any - even at what I could have charged for them.

But I suggested to him that it might be worth his while to look elsewhere and I that Class 58s would be just right for what he wanted them for and they would probably be available at a decent price.  I gave hm a name and number to ring which would at least get him in the right direction although it wouldn't be the person making the decision and off he went.  And that was how Class 58 made their way to France.

People forget is that several Class 58’s went to France twice, first time with Fertis, then the second time with TSO and ETL.  And just to clarify the Asbestos issue that @black and decker boy mentioned, that would have also affected the Class 56’s as well, and they all came back and most, if not all went on to have second lives with Colas, DCR and rebuilt into Class 69’s.

IIRC, there’re was suspected asbestos somewhere in the locos ( gaskets maybe? ) which has been said meant the French Authorities ruled out re-sale and return to uk

(not that it seemed anyone was waving their chequebooks around to buy one)

Asbestos was never a issue as they were built free of it, also BR had been ripping it out of rolling stock since the mid 70's.  One reason they never returned to the UK (I believe) was they were under contract, on paper with TSO and ETL for further HSL work within Europe, which unfortunately never came to fruition.
