The Scalefour Society is delighted to announce the return of its largest show dedicated to the very best in 4mm railway modelling. At a new, more accessible venue, it promises something of interest to all modellers. This post will bring you the latest information about the show, and will be updated for changes as they happen.

When
Scaleforum 2022 is taking place on the weekend of Saturday 24 September and Sunday 25 September 2022.

The show will be open from 10.30am to 5.30pm on Saturday, and from 10.00am to 4.30pm on Sunday.

Where
Scaleforum 2022 is at the Cressex Community School, Holmers Lane, High Wycombe, HP12 4QA. You can find it on Google Maps here.

Layouts
For many, the big attraction to Scaleforum is to see the many and varied layouts. We are delighted to have a great selection for you in 2022.

- Bankside. The successor to St Merryn, a gritty depiction of south London in the days of British Railways steam.
- Boston Frodsham. Based on a wharf and swing bridge, this dockside model is set around 1980.
- Faringdon. A superb model of the former GWR branch terminus in transition to British Railways.
- Hawes. An end-on junction between the NER and Midland in pre-Grouping days.
- Kitedale. Set in the west Pennine foothills, this LMR terminus operates in 1960s guise.
- Market Bosworth. An LNWR/Midland joint station set in 1908.
- North Elmham. Set on the Dereham to Wells branch, around 1958.
- Obbekær. An exquisite depiction of a Danish railway modelled to P87 standards
- Ravenscroft Sidings. A steel warehouse freight complex set in 1988
- Richmond, Surrey. Part of the mainline LSWR station and goods yard depicted in 1908.
- United Mills. A rail-served industrial unit in West Fife shown as around 1960.

And our special guest layout, Abbey Street. This is built by Jas Milham in S Scale, the true scratchbuilder's scale. This small station is set in East Anglia in the late 1950s and shows both freight and passenger services.

I'm pleased to announce that we have confirmed three more traders for Scaleforum 2022.  The first post in this topic has been updated to show this.

We welcome back the established names of London Road Models, and Dart Castings.  They will be bringing their wide ranges of cast and etched kits and details.

We're delighted to have a new trader to Scaleforum in the form of Pre-Grouping Railways.  They will offer a range of early wagon kits from a variety of pre-Grouping railway companies.

You can find details of each of these traders, and links to their websites, at www.scaleforum.org

Cheers

Unfortunately we've been notified that Dave Bradwell is unable to attend Scaleforum 2022 at Cressex School, High Wycombe, as a trader.

We are obviously disappointed that he won't be at our show, although his excellent range of kits will still be available online at Dave Bradwell kits on the Scalefour Society website

Cheers

There is a link in the first post to Google maps, on that can be seen bus stops in Cressex Road. It looks like the only option is the number 32, details here .

Yes, the 32 is the only option.   Whilst is stops on Cressex Road at the top of the entrance road to the school it does not serve the railway station.  From there you need to walk down Crendon Street around 170 yards and turn right into the High Street at the traffic lights.

The 32 is operated by Arriva and better details are on their website:  https://www.arrivabus.co.uk/find-a-service/32-32a-booker-to-micklefield-estate

With less than two weeks to go, preparations for the return of the Scalefour Society's largest show at it's new venue are well advanced.

Scaleforum will showcase the best in 4mm scale finescale modelling with a range of traders supporting your modelling needs. There is also a wide range of demonstrations covering topics ranging from starting in P4 to the use of radio control in 4mm scale models along with a mix of both traditional and cutting edge skills. Full details at the top of this thread.

We look forward to welcoming you all at the show at Cressex School, High Wycombe on Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th September.

Advance ticket sales and further details are available at http://www.scaleforum.org

Wish this was still held in Leatherhead.

Regrettably we have few, if any, dedicated exhibition venues in the UK for shows the size of S4um or ExpoEM. So we end up with school halls, leisure centres, etc. which invariably lack one or more of the facilities needed.

Leatherhead was a reasonable walk from the railway station and had adequate parking but like the Stoke Mandeville (Aylesbury) site had poor access for exhibitors and traders. It was also poor for public transport access (which Railex dealt with by putting on a vintage bus service). Bracknell Leisure Centre (ExpoEM) also has rather restricted access for exhibitors and traders and inadequate catering. That's not uncommon at leisure centres where the contracted caterers have to be used and usually can't cope with the appetites of the gourmands that attend model railway shows. The bureaucracy that surrounds the NEC, distance to the car parks and cost, etc. doesn't appeal much either. York has poor exhibitor/trader access unless you are on the ground floor and reasonable parking (I have never had to test out the public transport and self-catered).

So we invariably end up with a compromise that never suits everyone.

And if you want an exhibition venue, then it has to be paid for. I believe the cost for one recent show was around £20k for the weekend. If that is in your budget, there are more possibilities, but it pushes up ticket prices. The problem is, we are used to doing things on the cheap. Charge people the price of admission to a football match, and they get an attack of the vapours, despite the value for money of our shows being (IMHO - Hull city £36?) much greater.

Phil,

Thanks for your comments and you’ve hit the nail on the head. A combination of rising venue costs and falling attendances is impacting the viability of a number of shows - Scaleforum has not been immune to this.

We hope that we’ve got the balance right for Scaleforum this year. I’m sure we’d all like the show to be at the end of our street but, as a Society, we need to be mindful of the need to hold the show in a location which can be reached by the majority of the members and visitors. A tricky balance.

We hope to see many RMWeb-ers over the weekend of 24/25 September. There is a good mix of high quality layouts in P4, P87 and S Scale, a variety of demonstrations and, of course, a wide range of traders to relieve you of your spending money.

Advance tickets are available via the website (detailed above) and these give entry for the whole weekend.

We look forward to welcoming you.

Jeremy

There was always something rather charming about leaving Scaleforum on a sunny sunday afternoon, with the last cricket match of the season going on nearby.

It’s moved around a bit over the years. First was GW hotel Paddington same as ExpoEM (I think that’s right, memories not quite what it was), followed by the commonwealth institute and then Bletchley and so on. Fond memories of those early years of S4 membership and those I met up with back then.

Hope it goes well for everybody.

Scaleforum has never been held at Bletchley.  You might be confusing Scaleforum with expoEM, which was held at Bletchley for several years.

I will be there as part of the Devon Riviera Group, demonstrating various techniques when applying static grass and bringing along scenery supplies including a small range of the excellent MBR scenics from Poland and Model-Scene from the Czech Republic.

Greatly looking forward to setting off with 10800 and Brinkly this afternoon. It'll be so good to be back!

Oh thanks, so sorry, heck, my memories even worse than I thought! I was a member of both at the time which doesn’t help I suppose.

Anyone attending this show needing a motor/gearbox solution, bring info with you, if possible, to the High Level stand. Line drawings (to scale) are ideal but if you can't provide this, then the actual model certainly helps.

If you want head's start then read this:  https://www.highlevelkits.co.uk/gear-planner

It's been three tough years and we're looking forward to attending this show again. It's always a good one....

Quality railway modelling appeals across the board, regardless of scale or gauge, so we hope to see as many of you there as possible.
