Steve's 4mm workbench. Lima class 47 re vamp, 08 weathering and Hornby 25

Since you've already done a panel wash, you could probably do a very light 'frame dirt' spray.   Not always the most realistic, though.

If you want to play around, you could try a dot filter.   Would probably look real good on Rail Blue like you have here.

Matt varnish done, I ended up using 3 thin coats of MIG Lucky Strike Matt Varnish. I can see now why some people prefer a satin finish but I am pleased with it. I've added some SE Fincast glazing as well, next up the cab side handrails then I will leave it alone for a bit before weathering.

I wanted to use up stuff that I already had on this but for future projects Lazerglaze would def be on my shopping list, I've used it on an old Bachmann 03 and it is good.

Just added new windscreens to two Lima split headcode class 40 s using shawplan etches and lazerglaze. Held in place by superglue and accelerator as recommended by the Mostyn P 4 group. Finished off with etch wipers highly recommended.

Personally I would have gone down the Shawplan Laserglaze route instead of the Finecast soon to go yellow bubble wrap.

Mike.

I've seen this happen but in my experience the large majority don't. Perhaps the material sourced for forming those which turned yellow was faulty - a bit like a few examples of Mazak.......

On the other hand I have a Lima 31327 where it's happened to the factory plastic glazing!

@Enterprisingwestern, @AlfaZagato Thank you. It doesn't run too bad, I added extra pickups and new wheels from Peters Spares so it can negotiate code 75 track. Needs a bit more weight though I think.

If you leave the rusty lump of Russian steel in the middle and build up the weights around the motor bogie area in my experience that helps with the tractive effort.

Mike.

Headcode disc added and the class 31 is more or less all done except for the weathering, I'll now leave it alone for a while and get on with something else.

I'm afraid the Class 31 has remained on the bench for a while as I've got to start weathering some rolling stock and preparing my layout for a forthcoming (September!) show. I made a start on a Bachmann 16ton Mineral Wagon using MIG Olibrushers and inspiration from a Gauge O Guild video from Neil Podbury. I wanted to portray a mineral wagon that hasn't been in service too long and not yet turned into a rustbucket!

I'm building up to having a go at a loco.

Next up will be some 12ton vans.

  • sb67 changed the title to Steve's 4mm workbench.

Started on some vans, the first one just using an airbrush, Railmatch Frame Dirt and Lifecolour Liquid pigments. Needs a bit of refinement and I may have gone a bit ott but I have seen pictures of absolutely filthy vans.

As a diversion from weathering wagons, I've painted a few figures as I'm prepping the layout for my first show.

I'm not going to need any more really, maybe another loco crew but that depends on the Locos I choose to take.

They're all Modelu figures. A very cruel close up!

That's some nice figure painting, great flat tones and subtle colour blends with shading - no glossy looking figures here. You've done well to pick out the white shirt collar on the chap in the middle, without getting white paint elsewhere and I particularly like the grubby shirt on the gardener.

Thank you, the white shirt was just a tiny bit of dry brushing, I tried to keep the colours dull as well as most of the photo's I've seen during the early 60's clothes always seemed dull.

As another diversion and a bit of a homage to the late great Mick Bonwick I've decided to weather a Land Rover that could be used on my layout. I'm going to use methods from the thread he did on the subject.

Basic, out of the box model. I put some Maskol on the windows in case I couldn't get any varnish overspray off.

Mig dark wash added to the nooks and crannies and left to dry for 30 mins or so.

Most of the dark wash has been removed and the vehicle has been given a dusting of matt varnish. I'm going to let that dry then I'll use some powders for the next bit although I think those door hinges need toning down or painting.

Top stuff, Steve. I must do another landy. I have a choice of two. Both LWB Series one.

What did you use to remove the mig wash ?

Thanks Rob. To remove the wash, I just used a paintbrush dampened with white spirit, even after drying for a while it came off the high gloss surface pretty easily. I'm leaving the varnish to harden for a few days too as I think that could come off easy if I'm not careful! It was Humbrol acrylic varnish.

Some oil paint weathering finished off with some weathering powders, still some refining and the underframe to do, I think I was a bit OTT with the grubbier side although I've seen plenty of photos of vans in that state.
