RMweb not safe?

Recommended Posts

Sorely lacking elsewhere? Why is that? Is it because people are "dumb" and "stupid" as mentioned earlier or "daft enough" as you suggest, or because they don't have the experience that you and some others have and maybe they are older and do not understand these 'problems'?

Schools already provide young peole withg plenty of IT experience and that age group will be enable3d with more life skills than you or me, it is more than obvious that many older folk need support, not mocking. We should not forget that many of these old folk worked to provide the level of lifestyle many of us are now lucky enough to enjoy and perhaps they need a little more respect and support rather than being termed daft!

There's my little moan done then.

Phil. Proudly an old fart.

But you aren't of the generation that expects everything done for them, or has to have someone to blame for

your mistakes, so it wasn't aimed at you!

Never realised that! Have we really bred such a genertaion as you describe or is it something invented by the arrogant and intolerant media?

I thought this was a thread about Marathon Man. ;)

Is it safe?
You're talking to me?
Is it safe?
Is what safe?
Is it safe?
I don't know what you mean. I can't tell you something's safe or not, unless I know specifically what you're talking about.
Is it safe?
Tell me what the "it" refers to.
Is it safe?
Yes, it's safe, it's very safe, it's so safe you wouldn't believe it.
Is it safe?
No. It's not safe, it's... very dangerous, be careful.

Great film, but not for the screamish.

RMWeb is definitely not safe, I once connected and lost 3 hours of my time - spooky.

RMW is a Portal to a Universe far away. There be P4s and all sorts of weird beings out there including Pedantus Ignaramous and Trollus Underbridgeus.

Poor Andy Y spends too much of his time dealing with snowflakes and silly bu##ers from what I've heard and now he has Millennials; what a to do. I believe there are tablets that one can have prescribed to deal with Milennials, especially those that model post 1987 Sextetoriastional backwaters (DCC Sound).

May you all rest in peace.

There seems to be a lot of confusion / misunderstanding on this thread. Perhaps I can help, from a web developers viewpoint.

First, the following post from close to the start of the thread almost has the correct answer, in the second half of the sentence:

RMweb isn't on an https system, so browsers will sometimes flag it as unsafe.

All web sites are accessed either through the http or https (secure) protocol. The latter is unquestionably safer for users on any site, but has historically tended to slow access down. That is no longer an issue, and current web industry standard advice is for all web sites to use the https protocol.

That does not necessarily mean RMW is actually unsafe, but it will, as many have pointed out, appear as if it might be.

Most importantly, in a few weeks Google’s Chrome browser will start actively warning all its users, very forcefully, that they should not access any non-https site. To an extent they already do, but it’s going to get much louder! Google will be followed by all the other browser suppliers in a very short time. (For further background to this search for “chrome” and “https”).

So the issue for RMW is not “does the site need https to be safe”, but rather “does the site need https (fully certified, across the whole site) to avoid the membership thinking it might be unsafe and continuously querying the “error” messages and dire warnings they will get from their browser.

My advice is to bite the bullet, get the site fully and obviously https certified as soon as possible, and avoid the imminent flood of concerned and panicked postings. On most sites this can be done for free. For a few unusually complex web server installations it might cost as much as 100 pounds.

I think my question elsewhere and redirected here, is because my Chrome browser has recently started showing this 'unsafe' symbol. It isn't because I have not noticed it in the past, so thanks  Kiwi, that explans everything and I for one appreciate your simple and most helpful explanation.

It'll be happening as part of a planned server move in the not too distant (it should have happened by now, but hasn't).

That’s absolutely right. Google’s date for this change was 24th July (Chrome ver. 68). No firm dates for Firefox, Microsoft, Apple etc, but it will happen.
