Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Heyside: The Beginning

Hi   At the Wigan show in 2008 I bought the 7mm scale layout Heyside. It was acquired as a short-cut to getting something running at home, though as with all such things, it is never as great a short-cut as one hopes. This blog will detail the trials and tribulations of the extensive rebuild of the layout.   Heyside is a fictitious station set in Lancashire around the Oldham Loop. The layout was built as an exhibition layout by Trevor Smith, and exhibited just 4 times in the UK. It was featu

Slight change

OK, yesterday evening after posting the last entry, I went to meet up with fellow members of the Stroud Valleys Model Railway Club. We are currently homeless so we have to meet in a convenient Pub, life can be tough. Anyway someone suggested that I make the station twin road, so having played about with XtrkCad, the placing of a set of curved points has been added, image V2.   I will need to make some minor adjustments to the track placing to allow for this, but then I am only using the cad d

Motive Power Debate

For the past few months I've been having an argument with myself regarding what the Sidcup & Danson Lake Railway would use for motive power.   I've been drawn to the idea of some resin kits from the Smallbrook range (and indeed, an order is on its way to them shortly for a body kit and brakevan kit), but my initial thoughts in my "Creative Writing" blog entry, gave Kerr Stuart and their Tattoo design as a strong contender.   I've been thinking about that over and over, and I've realised

Another week, another Bulleid

Another week flies by and another dirty Bulleid rolls off the production line. In this case 34093 Saunton     Also another kit build is nearly finished, in this case a Parkside Dundas SR Plywood sided CCT van will post some photos once it is finally assembled. Had a slight problem with the floor being twisted, but have sorted it out, using a bit of creative thinking   Shock of shocks though I've ordered another kit to build....

Destruction for redevelopment.

Hi everyone...   I managed to get a little more work done yesterday.   Having placed the extra added detail that I am putting into the body of the K2, it means that I really needed to have a look at all of the valve gear as I really wasn't happy with it. It works well enough with the working reverser etc, but I was never going to be happy with the look of it, so I have started to take it apart, piece by piece, detailing each piece, chemically blackening them, and then replacing them on the r

Class 67 grills

Well the 'final' version has now arrived, and other than one area in which a grill hasnt etched properly (cant understand why as one slat at the bottom of one has been half etched rather than fully etched) That said I still am unsure if that grill really needs to be replaced as tbh I think the moulded one looks ok in comparason to the prototype (on which you cant see through.   What I intend to do is paint one up and see how it looks...   Everything else is perfect! Production will follow so

It's far too late now

Tonight I have to pack up Summat Colliery ready for the trip down south for Wycrail on Saturday, so no time left for futher fiddling - frankly I'm getting ready to pack it away under the desk and get on with some other modelling. It's the last outing until the Mansfield show next year - I could do with a few more bookings, so if you have a space to fill .......   So, hope to see loads of you at Wycrail, there's a lot of new detail etc on the layout since Member's Day and the Derby show, not le

Making a lever guard

Just a quick step by step I did in pictures about 1am last night! Apart from the length niggle all four of the ones i've folded so far have come out fine with 2 from the 8 thou sheet and 2 from the 10 thou. The 10 has less of a length issue as the folds were really designed for that thickness so it all ends up shorter.   Tools used, the tweezers are the useful bit for the folds while the sharp knife is vital to get it off the fret without distortion. I recommend a good optivisor or similar to

A bit of leverage.. crossing assembly bits too!

Yay my test etch turned up frmm PPD, not sure if they just did it or if Royal Mail held on to it for a bit.   Anyway, mostly lever etches in both 8 thou and 10 thou to test each, I needed to measure the thickness of each one as their etch of that detail seems to have gone a little awry..   Lever guard made up in 8 thou, no breaks and its square now but the top bit has turned up overlength this time, might need to adjust it again .   These worked well though - posed on top of an Exact

Size Testing

Some further progress - the curved platform woodwork is down and the front edge is filling out slowly as I add the bank. Still trying to decide what should go towards the Padstow end in front of the station - waste ground or some kind of development.   The math says that a five coach RR rake should fit into the island platform for summer special services.

Mark 1 Buffers and Rubbing Plates

Last packet of TPM buffers used up until the new ones arrive along with a pair of Ultima rubbing plates. This means one coach is approaching complete. I'm still not sure whether to redo the water filler pipes with wire because of the difficulty in first removing the plastic ones from the roof and repainting. The TPM buffers mean I can now fit much closer couplings - probably Red Caboose buckeyes.     (There will now be a short embarrassed silence while I go put the rubbing plates back on th

Clarendon Signals

A newcomer's work bench!(Clarendon Signal)   by Weskie   original page on Old RMweb __________________________________________   ??? posted on Sun Sep 23, 2007 2:34 pm   Hello all. I'm new to this forum so apologies if i make a mess of it. It's nice to see what some other people are up to,so i thought i'd join in. Cue picture of signal on bench. Well probably better off not seeing the bench, it's a mess but then aren't they all? [/img] The signal is a LNWR 55ft bracket signal with

Troublesome Bogies

This is by way of a short bump or plea for help , sparked by a few comments in the MBA thread.   One of the wagons I'm currently working on (or should be instead of typing) is the wretched Walrus. An ancient kit from deceased estate. As I mentioned somewhere down below , the bogies as supplied are unbuildable. I can't get them together for modern wheels ,. The only way forward I've found is to use some A1 Models H- frame etches.   The bogies are GWR Plate type, and even this approach is a bo

Everyone has to start some where

Due to lots of home comitments modelling has taken a bit of a back seat at the RJR shed, but I decided I would start a RMweb Blog so I could be ready for any blasts of activity   Just a quick overview of whats in the shed at the minute !!! The 45mm stuff seems to be my favourite size of choice at the moment, the most recent creation being a loco to clear those 1:1 scale leaves of the outdoor line ! Seen here sat waiting on a cold night     http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FFNHUOIn4Uc

Smithdown rd Junction

Welcome to Smithdown rd Junction, a lovely part of North London where railway lines emerge from every angle connecting East to West and North to South, The layout is supposed to portray somewhere around the wembley area, with the main lines on the lower level, two going to Euston and two diverging to the east to connect freight and mail to other London termini. The upper level will have a Mail terminal, a mainline running from the north east to the south west, and a freight connection to the WCM

Noname Wharf

Having been a member of RMweb for a while, and not posting much, it seemed a good idea to coincide the start of a new layout along with my signing to the updated forum.   Noname Wharf (a working title), is set nowhere in particular. It is actually going to be my 10 year old sons first proper layout, he doesn't count the double oval Thomas and Percy mounted on 6 x 4 chipboard.   The design, as set by mini-me is as follows;-   Diesel power, end to end, the fiddle yards are not shown on the t

Photos at last.

A couple of photos of the progress, as promised. Having major problems with Kadee Height at the moment, so any advice is gratefully received, as is any critism or advice. By the way the hoover needs to visit to tidy everything up.   Cheers for now.

Calm before the storm..........

Surprisingly everything is going pretty well at the moment, still waiting on the street lamps from China, need to make some dividers for the stock box and and to make a wooden box for all the electrics.   Other than that it's just finishing of a few more cars and minor details, hopefully should be ok for Sunday.   Quick pic also showing finished fascia with street sign.

The horror of what we do

I thought I'd share a picture of my workspace on Saturday morning before the exhibition - I like working on the kitchen table, but I'm beginning to see why Mrs. V. might not be so keen.     There is yet more mess out of shot.   To be fair, after working until 2am two nights in a row to finish the layout and rolling stock, I did come home from day one of Railex and spend my evening tidying up. Perhaps that's why I'm not sleeping on the sofa?

Modified Peco track

I've removed some of the diagonal sleepers on my crossing - which involves a slip so I can't remove the other diagonal sleepers since the slip has it's timbers at an angle halfway between the two routes.     Unfortunately I didn't manage to join the ends up neatly and there are three with joggles. I'm going to put something over those and run a duct through in the hope that the eye will follow that instead? One thing I noticed was that all of this would have been really easy on the work

DCC breaker

I haven't had much to report for a while, although I've been busy with my wagons in the meantime. The main obstacle to progress has been that New Zealand appears to have run out of Peco code 75 flexi. I ended up ordering some from Hattons which arrived last week - amazingly a Sprinter fell into the box as it went past, or at least that's my story...   So with track in hand I can get on and lay the last two sidings, but first I decided to tackle a task that I really hate - cutting and install

Track plan synopsis/justification

So now thoughts turn to scenery and track plan justification, so I've drawn up (roughly) what I've done so far.   This isn't totally accurate, but it has the right components in the right relationships. It's a bit more flowing in the flesh I think, although I may need to tweak the right hand side since it has too many board-edge parallels (they aren't completely parallel, but that's maybe not obvious enough).   Download XTC file I have a reasonable idea of what I want to do, but I would r
