Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

70 footers in the paint shop

These are the coaches after the first visit to the paint shop, lining and numbering to be done. Have you noticed they don't give you enough "W"s on the transfer sheets. I'm gonna be left with tons of left over lettering and numbering from these transfer sheets. I wonder if I can sell partly used sheets on ebay .   Rovex

Mineral Evolution

By way of a comparison here is the original mineral wagon I built before I kicked off my etching project.   Bachmann body Palatine models baseplate Bill Bedford w-irons Masokits brake gear parts Masokits door springs Ambis levers Smiths hooks Here is one I completed last night using my etched bits. Note its all a bit finer and I just need to add safety loop between push-rods and bottom door operating catch   Finally the original build, 3rd test wagon and final wagon.

Thompson Full Brake and Mark 2

The Mark 2 BFK now has an interior - unpainted so far, and the roof mostly done (needs another coat and some weathering/matting). One mystery remains first. Presumably the BFK has a periscope - but where does it go ?     Meanwhile I've also been putting together the test build of the Ultima Thompson matchboard full brake. Usefully the N gauge society has produced the rather less usual 8ft Gresley bogies this needs, as part of the rather excellent Gresley brake kit.     The only trouble

Delph push-pull trains

I see Coachman has started this subject in his coach blog. Not to be outdone, here's a couple of photos of an ex-LNWR push-pull diagram M15 driving trailer with a BR conversion of an ex-LMS Period II open third and a Lees breadvan (Fowler 3MT 2-6-2 tank) in charge. By all accounts, the coaches might have done better on their own! The prototype photo is by H Casserley and the model photo by me. Can you spot which is which? The M15 is one of a series made for me by Coachman (and without which a r

The lid goes on

Designing the cab floor attached to the frames allows the roof to be soldered on from the inside and still gives access for painting and glazing later.   The roof [22] is supplied as that 4th fret and is half-etched across most of its surface leaving only the rain strips on each side. I am so used to having to add rain strips from flattened wire this seems a nice touch.   However, the roof does need to be rolled/formed into shape. This is done by forming the large radius curve first by roll

2mm Point Rodding Stools - Is it worth it?

Hello   Well, that is the question going through my head today. Its something that has been bugging me for quite a while now. I really wanted to do point rodding on Highclere and the stools were kinda like the 'missing link'. I managed to persuade Ivan of Southwark Bridge Models to reduce an etch of his point rodding stools down to 2mm scale and as they arrived today through the post I couldnt wait to have a go...       I think they look great but will anyone notice them? Let me know

Yamanouchi Oshika

Have been having a little play around with some basic publicity material, before our club's maestro in this department works his magic...   Yamanouchi Oshika.doc   This attachment is just a standard word document, nothing flash...

Preparation for Wycrail

Well it's that time of the year again and Wycrail the annual exhibition for the High Wycombe and District Model Railway Society is happening tomorrow. Wednesday saw the usual frantic activity at the clubrooms to get all the stuff ready and also to dismantle Hinton Parva, the Society layout attending the show this year (as there are nine layouts within the Society we exhibit them one a year on a rotational basis).   Today sees the start of the set up, collecting one of the vans, early this aft

Jinty - tank details

I must admit to being pleasantly surprised by the feedback and encouragement given by various people in this community. It does give that added impetus to get cracking with the modeling, so thanks to all.   At this early stage of the blog I'll have to admit I'm still learning on style and presentation, hopefully it'll improve as time progresses. One aspect I have decided on for my blog is that where people have taken the time to comment on my postings I'd like to respond either by editing the

More Class 67 stuff

Assambally has started....   And tbh I probably ought to have waited until the morning as the work wasnt quite as tidy as I would have liked. Still its good to see the final etches on the model. I did have a slight problem with some black paint lifting, so I think next time I really must invest in some etch primer!   So far everything has gone to plan with all the components still fitting perfectly, just need to finish the end and roof grill now.....   (on the first photo the glazing dos

7mm Barclay Class 06 - Footplate Assembly

On the Intercity Workbench tonight: some fairly recent progress on assembling the footplate of the kit.   This probably isn't the thread for you if you want to know how to do things properly.... but maybe my bunglings will encourage a few others to have a go at etched kit construction. At least you can't do worse than me....   I'm currently working away from home (and at home I've got a beautiful 4 month old baby girl....), so progress has been slowed of late, but here are some photos of rec

Road-Railer Cameo

A little delayed by the joys of a Postal Strike, the parts I needed to have a go at a road-railer arrived today, so I've given it a whirl.   This isn't based on any particular prototype, I was just aiming for something that 'looks' like one. The main portion is the body of a lovely excavator from DM Toys in Germany (makers of the crane I used), with the cat tracks removed and then a new lower body constructed. This is a strip of card with some spare metal mouldings (not sure where they are fr

Sprat & Winkle couplings

Shunter George "Bulldog" Mullins critically eyes stock fitted with Sprat & Winkle couplings. His shunter's pole is legendary among shunters for being rather crude!   The following notes on Sprat & Winkle couplings seemed to generate some interest when first posted over on gwr.org.uk, so perhaps they are of of use to someone here also. I have taken the opportunity to take some new and better photos for illustration.     Hooked   Although the latest

Vi Trains 47 to P4

So I have finally given in and brought a Vi Trains class 47:   Going to need a fair bit of work still (need to carefully sand down the intercity logo & stripes then prime and spray the sides/ends GWT Green. I think it also needs to have the marker lights at one end changing to match my chosen prototype. 47813 SS Great Britain in Great Western Trains green. What I am planning to do is mask off the roof/yellow to spray the green (hopefully at the weekend weather permitting), then respray the

Maunsells and Mark 2s

The Electra vinyls arrived for an ex NSE BFK to go with the regional coaches. Easy to put on (took about 5 minutes, and about 15 to ge the original paint off). The vinyls only address part of the coach however. The underframe is of course wrong for an older Mark 2, although replacements are available from Ian Stoate in resin. The roof is more of a challenge and needs to be drilled and fitted with ventilators. Then the wheels, interior and rubbing plates..   There's also a very nice set of fade

4mm/00 Falcon Brass ROD, Quick update before the Hull show.

Thanks everyone for the kind remarks and encouragement but I have failed to complete the loco and paint it before the show with everything going on around me but it will be having the odd test run on Cattybrook Road for which it was built for at the Hull show. The picture below is where it stands now as I have just completed the chassis and I still have to wire up the motor, build the pony truck and add the cab roof so it will be a late night. (again)   I made a terrific cock up two days ago
