Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Construction time

Construction of the baseboards is in 9mm ply. Below is a photo taken on 30th May showing the basic idea.   followed by three of the boards put together. Boards are located to one another by metal dowels and then coach bolted.   After construction of all the boards there commenced first the track laying and then the wiring. Operation is by DCC so every length of track on each board is linked to two buses, one for supply of the electricity and one for return. Glenn in

Visiting Locomotives

Every so often, a visiting loco appears, a cop if you will. Today, a B17 appeared deputising for a failed B1 on the Red Bank Parcels. It was briefly on the goods reception road, so I took the opportunity to grab a few photos. (OK, I know it's a Great Eastern Loco really)         Another very good model from Clive :icon_thumbsup2: , but probably not on the exhibition roster.   Richard

Shunting Signals

It is amazing what you can get done over a weekend when you don't have RMweb to distract you. Seriously though I work in IT systems management and can sympathize with Andy. These kinds of upgrades are a complete pain for all concerned and we should be grateful to Andy and the Mods for all the work they put in.     So, the weekend was taken with fitting a pair on Conrad point motors to some ground disks. The disk was an etch of unknown original I obtained back in the days of the old Cambridge

More Gronk Progress

A bit more progress has been made with the 09 - I've still not been tempted back to making track, even though I really should be getting on with it!     The powders and gouache have been broken out to add further dirt and grime, and I've also made a start on the underframe.I've decided to try a different method to the one I used on my last 08, which was straight out of the Martyn Welch book. This time I've used slightly different materials - acrylic gloss black, grimy black weathering powde

This is here because....

When the end was nigh for the previous RMweb, I wrote that there would be some new pictures of the 4REP when the new site is up and running. I thought that I should start the new thread (OK the blog) just to let you know that I haven't forgotten. The new site could be said to be up and jogging at the moment, not quite running..... When the pictures are sorted out, I'll transfer/copy the old thread over, and then add the continuation. No point doing so yet while the much appreciated Andy Y is sti

A few days without RMweb and I've gone and built a model railway

Okay, that might be exaggerating a bit. But now that I've downloaded Opera* and can see the pictures again I thought I'd post what I've been up to during the intermission.   Boards ? ?        To join the two boards together I've used the simplest method I could think of, a few nuts and bolts. It's very secure and easy to undo when I need to transport the boards. When I make the travel covers for each board I'll use the same method to attach them too.           With the

Collett Goods

Hi all This blogging is all new to me (no doubt it will get easier). Anyhow just a short profile of what scale i model group and period and whats on my workbench at the moment. The scale that i model is P4 (my friend Dan Randall would like it S7). The railway is the GWR from 1934 to 1938 (i do like Ganges and Manors). At present on my workbench is a Martin Finney Collett goods(inside working motion). The tender is 98% complete and is in primer. The chassis is nearly finished and has been modified

Castle Plastering

Well, progress has been slow on Calshot due to life in general, but today I got cracking with some DAS modelling clay. First, the castle needed a good sand down before the DAS could be applied, nothing too special, just enough to get rid of the large lumps of polycell on it. The clay was then rolled out and covered over the castle. The window areas were pushed in to form a recess. Unfortunately I only had enough clay to do half of the castle, so the bottom half will have to wait until I can get

No modelling this week - the reason why - my new grandson

Not a lot done this week as my first grandchild, Joshua Harding, made his way into this uncertain world. He's a little belter, much Thomas stuff will be bought soon. Now the excitement has died down, the connecting rods will be milled, the coupling rods are done. I will be posting pictures (when able) of the scale of the problem and the completed rods. The scale of the problem has grown after Winchester Railway Modellers' clear out, I have acquired the basis of my proposed O gauge plank, this be

Tiny bits of modelling

Well today I have managed to do the first bit of modelling for about 6 weeks. Wasn't much. I just added some more "enamel" posters to the station fencing, and added some sheep to the field behind the siding. I have also added dcc chips to the 108. Quick easy job that one. I must get round to changing the wheel sets for proper 2mm ones. Not much admittedly but a something is better than nothing. Maybe I can get a little bit more done now!

Pot bank underway

We have decided to develop our wooded area by adding a pot bank and maybe some terrace houses, this will add to the Potteries atmosphere and better identify the urban setting of the layout.   I've formed a papier-mache shell around a suitable bottle, then coated this with DAS clay rolled out to 4mm thickness. Once dry I sanded the finish to reduce the lumps and slid the model off the bottle.   Back on the bottle for marking out the horizontals which was achieved by using an elastic band wh

Making Holes

In order to get the trains off-scene, I needed to make some escape hatches in the sides of the winebox. Out came the power tools, and with some work and some luck I made the right sized holes in the right places. (Woodwork is not something I'm good at). Feeling pleased with myself, I took some photos through the new openings. Apologies for the depth of field problems - I need to get the camera manual out and work out how to overcome these.   First - a view from the front-right hole.

Detail, Detail, Detail

As the last post said, what to do next as I seem to have stalled over the last couple of months, so I have decided on a small plan of action.   Rather than work on anything big, over the coming month apart from running the layout I am going to do just those little jobs such as:   Add gutters and drain pipes to buildings Get flowers in the flower beds. Look at where people should be and the cameo's etc   It will take a couple of days to get through but to help me on my way I have ordered

Two Years on ...

Two years ago I started Summat Colliery - my first real attempt at a scenic layout and a portable exhibitable one at that   If you want to follow the path I took over the last two years, it's here on the old forum, but this blog will show what happens next and give details of shows etc that it is booked to attend.   I've added a Exhibition Diary block which will detail shows that Summat Colliery will be attending

T Gauge Musings

Some may recall a while ago I was looking to build a T Gauge model. Now I know space cannot be used as an excuse here, the issue was simply one of time. During the interim, I did a little bit of work on John's 'Lynnbottom' layout, on the scenic side. Now the T Gauge manufacturer, Eishindo, have a number of exciting items in the pipeline including points (hurrah! ) and the Kiha 40 diesel railcar - much to look forward to.   Something that has been planned for quite a while are road vehicles, a

Yet more plans

Whilst there's been problems with the forum, I've been doing even more planning and thinking, and have come up with yet another plan. The entry into the fiddle-yard for the mainline never looked quite right - it was too far forward, leaving the scenic area in front of the fiddle-yard very narrow. So with a little twist, the plan now bends the other way, with the centre of the layout towards the back, and the edges further forward. I've also worked on the branch and sidings, and am happier wit

Music and Model Railways

As I sit here listening to Ian Brown's new album 'My Way', there's certainly nothing Sinatra-esque about it. However, the penultimate tune is entitled 'By All Means Necessary', which strikes a chord with me.   You see, I'm mad about wanting to build, finish and run my very own railway adventure. But, for whatever reason, my efforts have been halted. When the fire in the belly rekindled in 2006 after a long lay-off from the hobby (16 years or so), I went for the jugular and spent my bonus (the

The Tale recapped

Here reopens the Kilbrannan Ferry Layout thread - hope you enjoy. I will recap earlier progress and give a potted history on the sketchy/fantastic raison d'etre.   The layout is a 13' x 2' terminus to fiddle yard layout in my garage. It is EM, trackplan (below)   is based loosely on Aberfeldy with much influence fromm other Scots places such as Killin, Dornoch, and is based on a (wildly fantastic) "might have been" C and O (and NBR/West Highland) incursion into the Mull Of Kintyre. The la

Research for a charter rake

A chance stumble across an old thread on Demu has revived interest in a project I started planning a while back,   One area that I find quite interesting to operate are charter rakes, the combination of all sorts of different traction with rakes of mixed coaching stock is rather appealing. At the moment I have in progress a full VSOE set (which will have an accurate formation of different coach types, and is more of a long term project). Along with a full Blue Pullman set (Although this still

New photos

Hi All,   Desparately tried to transfer entries from my original thread in RM Web but failed. I have successfully registered as New Member (with same thread title) but my images do not appear. Frustration is getting the better of me and so I've stuck to old RM Web till it shuts down. Race to finish before access is lost.   Nigel
