Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Forks Trestle 0n30

As part of the CRM 0n30 Modular Layout i am building a valley Modular which will have a wooden trestle bridge going across it The standard for the modules is to have the track at four inches above table level, Forks Trestle will hang between two tables though and the rest of the modules will then be placed either side of it. This arrangement works OK, we have a single OO scale module which drops below table level too, but it is strictly one drop down section per assembly because varying table

North British D6123 Profiling the body...

Body Profiling - You should be careful comparing your models to prototype photos. In some cases that could drive you a bit insane, 'cause there's a lot to correct. You may even have to correct things you've already corrected! There's a serious roof error in this shot, the extra filler hatch has been installed in the wrong place, it should be about 10 mils down the roof toward the photographer...       The windows have been opened outward to match the etch. This is a huge improvement. The u

North British D6123 Chassis

Frame Modifications - This is one way to do it if you use the Bachmann Class 24 frame to get it to fit into the Hornby Class 29 body. The frame is a heavy alloy casting which isn't too hard to cut and grind. Just don't get those metal shavings in the gears...   There are two thicker areas towards the center on either side of the motor- these need to be ground down flush with the side towards the top. It doesn't hurt to take the lip off the whole upper edge either. This also insures that the H

PNA production line...

I've had two of the Bachmann PNA wagons (a 5 and a 7 rib) for nearly 18 months and they've never before appeared on my workbench!   These are good quality, value for money models of a nice mundane prototype. Perfect for Paxton Road - which is endeavouring to permeate averageness and mundane in it's environs, scenery and rolling stock (if not in quality of finish and modelling!). The Bachmann model uses their TTA underframe, as did a batch of the prototype wagons. Unfortunately it does not accu

KAG meeting 1st October

I managed to organise my work schedule around another visit to my 'other' area group last week to catch up on progress and do a bit more myself.   Here is Mark, Mike and Al (Pinkmouse) not getting in each others' way as the Eridge trackwork gradually gets more extensive       Chris had meanwhile pre-chaired all this rail before going on holiday - whether this is cause and effect we don't know . When he comes back we'll show him the Colin Craig FB etches that Mark bought at Scaleforum!

North British D6123 Parts is Parts

In the spirit of never quite completing a project before starting on another, here's my latest work bench amusement, it's going to be a D61XX Class 29:     You need two bodies to do this right since no one offers a casting of the boiler water filler hatch on the roof. The Hornby model only comes with one, the prototype had two. Not that the Hornby hatch looks very much like the prototype mind you, but you have to draw the line somewhere or you will be scratch building...   These are the

Introduction

This blog will document the planning, deliberations, prevarications, and hopefully construction and operation of a 00 roundy roundy layout for me to play with (occasionally) at home - when the kitchen/dining room is available for me to put it up. The fact that we have had the kitchen recently rebuilt so it is now the largest room in the house is of course entirely coincidental .   First off is to import the pages from the old RMWeb using Martin Wynne's brilliant little device (see elsewhere

    • There were twelve 'Stars', with the final ones not delivered until after Gooch had introduced the first of his own 'Firefly' class.  I think I have captured all the main variants, except Shooting Star which has been described as having a lower 'Haycock' top with the manhole cover on top.  It sound like a half-way house between the round top and a full haycock but I've not found a drawing to copy.
    • And looked even more modern when it retired from service in 1871 with no boiler protuberances apart from a somewhat later style coffee pot on top of the firebox.
    • Again interesting Mike, to see the difference between the two.  You will have a complete fleet of these soon.  I am still amazed that the crew stood on the back of that as it hurtled along at 60 mph.
    • I'm afraid this is a very long standing issue. Loads of people have lost money, I placed an order that was never delivered.  You can contact trading standards  South Ayrshire Trading Standards (01292 61600) and add it to the list.
    • and yet North Star is the earlier of the two.  This engine was originally for an overseas order so perhaps a less 'decorative' style was applied   The haycock-style firebox was devised to provide a dry steam-collecting space and was adopted by Gooch for many of his early designs, including the Firefly class and his first of the series that became the famous 8 foot singles.  After the first of these, Gooch reverted to a round-top firebox
