  1. But small arms fire isn't going to do an awful lot of damage to a locomotive boiler made of - maybe - 9/16'' plate* ! * only had a 4F boiler drawing to hand
  2. BLOODY 'ELL ........ I was only hypothesizing about the probability of a random combination of features appearing - not demanding that anyone should produce me a model of anything in particular. ☹️ Maybe it's time to give milk tanks a rest .........
  3. I suspect you'd be hard pressed to create a hybrid combination of features that didn't actually feature on one wagon at some time !
  4. .... though there are probably people on it who'd disagree with that. 🤪
  5. There's a photo of that loco 'at Glasgow before delivery' in Rowledges's book - where he says "No. 7195 was used for tests with armour plating before leaving the maker's premises in Glasgow and spent a short while on test on the Melbourne Military Railway." presumably after it "went directly to the Longmoor Military Railway" ......... later it went on loan to the LNER in 1947 and became BR 90172 - presumably it had lost the armour by that time.
  6. A perfectly acceptable phrase in any English variant - so long as the 'proof' in question is of an acceptable percentage and a good vintage ! ..... flambé-ing is optional.
  7. With all due respect, I was under the impression that getting closer to real operation might be considered doing wagons properly - but when you mould 'invisible' drawgear and buffer springs as part of the chassis - and often buffers themselves - it makes the fitting of proper sprung buffers and drawgear somewhat troublesome ......... at least the tensionlocks can be removed for disposal quite easily. ( Other points of view are available.) Have a great holiday !
  8. Some people are happy with having minimal knowledge while others beg to differ .................. takes all sorts !
  9. The second vehicle appears to be a former SECR First ( possibly downgraded to Third ) in an otherwise LSWR set.
  10. A super detailed under-frame is fantastic if the bits which are super detailed are actually visible other than in derailment mode ....... pretty buffer springs and drawgear can be a right pain in the whatsit for those few of us who wish to fit functioning items - and should never be seen by anyone else !
  11. ... presumably in Pennsylvania they pronounce it as in reading a book ! ...................... I'd always assumed that place was Redding too !
  12. Don't they know the old trick of notching the rail with the corner of a triangular file above your dummy fishplates. 🙄
  13. Before anyone points it out, of course the Southern already had a class of L1s - and my Crownline one is STILL among the unfinished projects on the workbench. Closer to topic, I'm tempted to invoke Rule 1, again, and assume that the LNER's unwanted L2s ended up south of the Thames under BR - they'd have felt at home here !
  14. Using not too much Rule 1, I have an L1 on my 1948 Southern layout ....... there WAS an expectation that trials would be carried out but I think 42198/9 were too obviously successful ! ....................................... sorry, that doesn't answer your query one iota ! 😎
  15. Certainly not that photo - but it looks like DM721282 & DS70242 again. ( Always though a 73xxx was a Standard Five not a Little Ed.)
  16. The tyres hanging off the side of a boat are usually let down already !
  17. At least one was among the many, many vehicles sold off from Inverurie Works and ended up grounded in a local farmyard - so, presumably it ( & others ? ) spent time operating in Scotland before withdrawal.
  18. Yes, you've got a choice of 'cle-res-tory' or 'cleres-try' for a start ........... Chambers dictionary is clear that it's 'clear' - and even gives an alternative spelling of 'clearstory'. ( Other dictionaries are available )
  19. Yes, I spotted 'cle-rest-ory' and cringed - it's clearly a clear storey !
  20. They did a red Hall or two too .......................................... the only good thing about all these is that it's easy to repaint them with a nice coat of plain black - something I might consider if when that blue O1 gets remaindered at a silly price.
  21. Who's being judgmental ? ........... it's a fact that the factories would have been short of workers for a while - and we needn't discuss where replacements came from.
