  1. What we think of as LSWR 'classes' weren't described as such until the Southern tried to tidy things up - fifteen years or more after the K14s were built ........ even a hundred years later, I'd hesitate to call that 'soon'.
  2. "... three wheels of the locomotive came off the tracks" ........... intriguing ! - or do they mean three axles ? ( a journalist wouldn't know the difference )
  3. What better place to test your landslip restoration & future-proofing techniques !!?!
  4. Am I imagining things or is that first coach from the XP64 train ? ...... if so, someone might know where it might've ben seen.
  5. No doubt the shelter on Lord Nelson ( above ) is the same colour as the loco ...... not easy to determine on the others - though the 'Brighton' one looks as if it might be unpainted timber.
  6. ... as any account of the - ongoing - restoration of the 'Windcutter' wagons on the GCR will testify. ( Though they've carried sharp-cornered lumps of processed geology too.)
  7. The 'Pillbox' would be appropriate for Southern Railway ( exact dates depending on version ) & BR days and the BR van from early BR days ...... each, by definition, into NSE days.
  8. Why "so-called" ? ......... they were built against Works Order K14 just as the others were built against Works Order B4.
  9. Yeah, before long we'll have the technology for a REALISTIC Giraffe Wagon an' Battlespace Rocket Launcher ................. always thought the originals a bit gimmicky !! 🤪
  10. But they're not the same lamp posts, of course, so the spacing could have changed !!?!
  11. Well, the lettering 'Guard' appeared on a new door on a new type of coach called a TGS.
  12. Yes, Yes, Yes ........... which is why I made no mention of different cylinder ends nor speculate about three-cylinder locos which are more or less guaranteed to give different results - and I was assuming ( yes, that word again ) that valve events would be carefully set before each test .................................. unless the test was specifically to suss out any pre-existing inequality, of course.
  13. WOT !!?! .......... ANOTHER duplicate ! ...https://www.jwmodelrailways.com/product-page/r-355-b-0-4-0-industrial-locomotive-nellie Yes, interesting, but VERY limited application.
  14. T'other side at Loughborough on 16/8/97 : - .... looks to be in 'as received' condition.
  15. ...or could you assume that the diagram for each outside ( or inside ) cylinder would be as close as dammit to its opposite number ??!?
  16. Yes, of course I knew prexactly what you meant. 😊
  17. Moreover, there are EE type 4s available - or on their way - from other sources yet no C2 or C2X* to haul coal wagons available from various manufacturers. * feel free to swap for other appropriate 'missing' locos if you wish.
  18. I'd guess the thumbscrew to the right of the pulley would be tightened to grip the cord.
  19. You'd have difficulty prosecuting a truck ................ but, seriously, the matter could be covered in the vehicle's Annual Test - though the portability of a satnav would be problematic.
  20. ... and, as we know, a bad workman blames his tools.
  21. I think you'd struggle to find any genuine Kent coal !
  22. Generally true but 'sets' were mentioned and the coaches considered to be part of a permanent set would normally go through the paintshop together ........ but not always !
  23. 563 was reinstated to traffic in 1939 to help with the war effort - how helpful it was might be debatable - and was painted unlined Maunsell green with Bulleid insignia* according to Southern Style .......... presumably it remained thus until 1945. * pre-war style, of course, with the pointy 'N's
  24. C'mon, everybody knows that all GWR locos are the same - so Pannier Tanks must be 'generic' by definition ! 🤪
  25. Probably since the demise of the Car Carrier ............. maybe that'll be 'announced' for reinstatement next April 1st ??!?
