The Blue Streak
Hi Everyone, Just back from a trip to NZ and took a few snaps for the Aircraft thread. First up Airliners and then some RNZAF stuff to follow There is a bit of reflection on some due to being snapped through a window at the terminals. PatB
A bit of a cheat here because I posted the same picture in the bike thread. But it's my Triumph in front of an ex RAAF Vampire. thruxjet.jpg That's out at Beverley isn't it? Have you had a look at the "Aviation Museum" out there? Beverley's just down the road from me. I've never actually been into the Aviation Museum, although my Son has on school trip. I've got another week off work to "recover" from my week in NZ so I might just try and get over to see it. PatB
That's right Pat. Beverley's just down the road from me. I've never actually been into the Aviation Museum, although my Son has on school trip. I've got another week off work to "recover" from my week in NZ so I might just try and get over to see it. Thought so. The museum is quite interesting, if not exactly focused. Many of the exhibits seem to be bits out of the Vampire. Many of the others have, I suspect, been amassed by one or more plane obsessed locals as the opportunity has arisen. For example, there are quite a few of the sort of mounted airliner models that might be found in airline offices. There's also a complete Mignet HM-14 Flying Flea and, IIRC, a homebuilt sailplane of some sort. It's all very "Australian rural museum" if you know what I mean. Well worth the couple of bucks entry cost I reckon.
The Blue Streak
Ok it's not of an aircraft. But taken by my Daughter over the Southern Alps in New Zealand from an Airbus A320. (You can see the wing tip so I reckon it fits in the thread) . It's of the Moon rising in the East Just as the sun was setting on the other side of the plane in the West causing the unusual lighting. The picture was pretty cool I thought, but My Daughter says it was far more spectacular, than what her Tablet was able to catch. Jeff Smith
I may be out of touch but I don't think I've noticed an A320 wingtip retrofit like that?
Jeff Smith
Ok, I stand corrected, apparently now fitted to many.....
The Blue Streak
Airbus call the new wingtips - Sharklets (I think Boeing use the term winglets) they are standard on the A320 Neo (new engine option) and have become a popular retro fit for in service older A320 aircraft. According to Airbus, the "sharklets" can offer up to a 4% improvement in fuel saving which can mean either a higher payload, increase in range or just lower operating costs. It apparently also helps with a better rate of climb along with many other improvements over the older wingtip. Seems like a lot of positives for what seems such a relatively small change. Jeff Smith
What a cracking thread..... am I the only one who feels a strange urge to buy some old Airfix kits...? I did buy and make a couple of 1/72 kits in order to take photos to use for a couple of paintings some years ago. RAF Meteors were not allowed to fly over the front line near the end of WW 2 so never met the ME 262 in air combat - I wanted to portray it.....also use of the autobahns for ME 262 operation based on allied photos.
Paperlad
On the 'ramp' at Bander Abbas, Iran. We'd just brought in 1000 pedigree goats from Barcelona. I'm told the goats are cost €600 each and are for breeding and milk. It was the first international cargo flight into Bander for 20years.
