bingley hall
A 119 on a Gatwick - Reading service and a 101 on an opposing service, on a sunny February Saturday afternoon in 1989 at Betchworth. The platform gas lights were still in use at this time.
leopardml2341
Mustn't forget these attractive Trans-Pennine units. In reduced 4-car formation (after removal of the buffet car), one stands on the centre road at Sheffield Midland in 1980 awaiting its next turn. In fact, two cars have been removed. One of the non-driving motor brakes has been removed as well as the buffet car.

You can see why I didn't go into class numbers as my DMU knowledge is "iffy". Thanks for the info.
RMweb Premium keefer Posted August 14, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted August 14, 2016 It was around this time that the remaining MBS cars had their engines removed making them TBS. While a non-driving motor was common amongst EMUs, the 124s were the only DMUs to have them.

Fat Controller
Unfortunately, during my 'spotting days' any journey over the North & West meant the the announcer at Cardiff General reading out "....calling at Newport, Pontypool Road, Abergavenny, Hereford, Leominster, Ludlow, Craven Arms, Church Stretton.... " . Therefore 75mph ( with a Cl.120 and an extra Cl.116 or Cl.121 'booster' ) was something beyond our comprehension . Brian R I remember one doing about 90 at the bottom of Cockett bank; the driver then remembered he had a stop at Gowerton.

RMweb Gold Popular Post Market65 Posted August 14, 2016 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted August 14, 2016 Hi. Tonight I have photo's that are a little different. The first one shows the inner end of a class 108 DMBS when the 2 car 108 that is in the national collection was still at the NRM, York. The next photo' shows the interior of a Cravens class 105/2 DMBS from the middle saloon, on leaving Bridlington in September, 1982. I have an audio only recording of the journey to Beverley, and all the rattles and vibrations can be heard only too clearly! Best regards, Rob.
RMweb Gold russ p Posted August 14, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 14, 2016 Scary to think the woman in this scene that looks so recent and familiar is probably approaching or retired by now! Where's the stop button I want to get off!!

Rivercider
Bristol normally had two class 121 single power cars allocated in the 1970s and early 1980s. Their regular use was on the Bristol Temple Meads to Severn Beach service. 55032 and 55033 were the regular units and had set numbers B132 and B133 respectively. Both of these photos have appeared on earlier threads. In January 1982 there was unusually heavy snowfall in the Bristol area which affected the train service and may explain the presence of a single power car at Weston-super-Mare. 55032 (set B132) departs Weston for Bristol, 11/1/82 In 1980 55033 was in collision with the stop blocks at Severn Beach and was stored out of service for a time before being returned to traffic. 55033 (set B133) is seen at Severn Beach waiting to return to Bristol Temple Meads. Although there are stop blocks behind the set at one time this was a through route which rejoined the South Wales Main LIne via Pilning Low Level station, 11/2/80 (date amended) edit - here it is stopped at Marsh Junction 55033 (B133) at Marsh Junction 18/6/80 cheers Edited August 15, 2016 by Rivercider
jonny777
The station is no more. The units are no more. Lincoln St Mark's in the mid 1970s. In the foreground, a 2-car Derby unit stands ready to leave for Nottingham, whilst behind a 2-car Cravens unit waits to head in the opposite direction to Cleethorpes. File2182.jpg That photo of the Cravens shows one of the early variety ordered initially for M&GN services and to be fitted with tablet catchers. However the route was closed before they had much of a chance to operate the service, and the tablet catcher recess just behind the driver's door was initially plated over, as can be seen in this photo. I am thinking that one of our dates must be wrong, because I have a photo of W55033 on a Severn Beach service at Temple Meads dated 4/2/81 (the day before yours) and as you can see it has been re-painted in blue/grey livery.
RMweb Gold russ p Posted August 15, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 15, 2016 That was actually a pad to stop paintwork damage when changing tokens on the move. It was also fitted to Derby lightweight and yellow diamond metcams allocated to East Anglia Tablet catchers would have been just above the sole bar on the M&GN
jonny777
Thanks for that Russ. Someone told me the bit about the tablet catcher plated over about 50 years ago on Spalding station, and I have believed it since that day... until now.

RMweb Gold Market65 Posted August 15, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 15, 2016 Hi. Here are three photo's of which the first one shows the interior of a class 101 unit leaving Scarborough for Hull on the 18th August, 1981. The next two photo's show a NER quad of class 108, leaving Beverley to Hull on 19th August, 1985 - sorry about the dull weather that day. br2975
Nowadays this station is called just 'Llandaff' . Get off here for 'Llandaff' - and you're in for quite a stroll. . The GWR and at one time BR(WR) had it right - " Llandaff for Whitchurch" . Brian R
