Hello all, as we have quite a few threads dedicated to particular classes of loco, thought i'd start one for 1st generation dmu's. Please feel free to add to the thread. I don't have any pic's from back in the day, so to get the ball rolling here are some of the Battlefield Line's class 122, 55005, to get the ball rolling.

Interesting, as I'm researching a little bit about 1st gen DMUs in the Birmingham area, 1960s ~ 1980s.

But did 122s ever get to Redditch?

Yes, they certainly did. Probably more common in the pre cross city days, as there were only 3 trains a day before the cross city service started. I have a picture in a book somewhere of a single car arriving at Kings Norton on a Redditch - New St. service sometime in the late 60s or early 70s. I'll dig it out and let you know what book it's in.

In answer to Railsquids Redditch query ...

Given that Tyseley used theirs as power car substitutes in Class 116 sets then almost certainly yes....

Cheers

Phil

I must admit my memory is very hazy, my mental note says "Cross-city line served by 116/117s" but thinking back I probably wasn't all that interested in those old grotty DMUs so didn't take much interest in formations etc.

Two from Birmingham New Street in June 1986

We could well have crossed paths...

Towards the end of DMU working a right old motley collection of units used to turn up on the Cross City line, I even remember a former Scottish power car floating around (without a trailer) I think it might have been a Gloucester unit of some description.

Then, come the glorious day of electrification, and the Cross City ended up with a right old motley collection of electric units former Eastern Region stuff and all sorts, complete with inappropriate system maps.

As for Tyseley's class 122s, they could turn up anywhere as has already been mentioned they were more often than not used as substitute power cars in other sets. A tradition Tyseley has maintained with its class 153s nowadays which hardly ever seem to venture out alone.

I remember enjoying the front seat of a class 122 from Crewe to Birmingham, a daily summer only bucket and spade school holiday service from Llandudno, a suburban set was diagrammed, with no toilets, a great idea with all those kids in tow,.

I recall some DMUs turned up in the early-mid 80s with London route maps, either from Kings Cross or St. Pancras (units displaced from the BedPan electrification?).

BTW very relevant site for this thread: http://www.railcar.co.uk/

In post 10, the class 120 has a class 104 TSL in place of a class 120 TRBSL. You can see the deeper windows, and the fact that there are luggage racks opposite the toilet - that window has no opening vents. These substitutions happened quite often in later years.

With best regards,

Rob.

Tyseley had a number of class 127 trailer cars, to replace many asbestos contaminated 116 trailers, which were withdrawn. There was also a fair few 115 power cars allocated to Tyseley in the 80's, mainly formed into 4 car sets with a 116 power car at the other end.

Interesting to note that the four car "go slower" units used the Class 115 DMBS to replace the Class 116 DMBS which had a larger guard's van.  These were then reformed into a number of units which had two Class 116 DMBS which does allow those who still have the ancient Lima suburban unit to at least consider modelling one to save hacking the surplus van area!

Later some 116 DMBS were coupled to Class 101 DMS cars to create a lash up to cover for Sprinter shortages, apparently nicknamed "Warwickshire Pullmans" by train crews!

On the Tyseley theme I took a couple of instamatic photos in the 1970s.

It is not an area I know well, but my notes say that the depot/sidings had recently been extended

to cater for the 'additional units required to work the enhanced Fiveways Litchfield/Redditch service'
