Tonight I have a photo' of a class 101 entering Beverley station in June, 1985 from Bridlington. The train is composed of two twin sets. There is the number 70 at the top of the middle windscreen. I wonder what that was for?

Class 119 unit

L588

A question that I have is the L588 the set number like for instance 156470 is the set number which has vehicles 52470 and 57470 or is it something different like for depot identification ?

attachicon.gifL588.JPG

I do not know the composition of class 119 set  L588 on the day you took your photo, but my RCTS Coaching Stock 1980 edition

and my Platform 5 Summer 1982 edition, both show set L588 as being formed 51079, 59437, 51107.

On the Western Region  the prefix letter indicated the owning Division.

L = London, or Reading Division, units based at Reading (RG)

B = Bristol, or West of England Division, units allocated to Bath Road (BR) but actually serviced and maintained at Marsh Junction

P = Plymouth District of the West of England Division, units allocated to Laira (LA)

C = Cardiff, or South Wales Division, units allocated to Cardiff Canton (CF).

The set numbers varied over the years, but indicated the class of units in the set.

In Summer 1982 this was broadly the position, with some variations.

Sets L101 - B133 were class 121 single power cars,  the set number equated the vehicle number, L120 = 55020, up to B133 = 55033

Sets L280 - L288 were class 121 driving trailers L280 = 56280 etc

Sets C300 - C335 were class 116 3 car sets

Sets L400 - C450 were class 117 3 car sets

Sets P460 - B473 were class 118 3 car sets

Set P480 was a class 118 2 car set

Sets L571 - L596 were class 119 3 car sets

Sets C615 - C616 were class 120 3 car sets

Sets C800 - C823 were class 101 2 car or 3 car sets

this list of course changed a lot over the years,  in 1980 for example there had been more class 120 sets at Cardiff.

cheers

You can add to the list B9xx and C9xx, which in later years where the Class 108 power and trailer, and with some of the Cardiff sets, power twins.

A DMU lash-up was de rigeur for certain go-anywhere railtours.

Here, the Bevercotes Collier, with a 101 + Trans-Pennine 124 combination, three shots at Bevercotes Colliery itself, and another at an unknown location (anyone help? might be somewhere in the Barnsley/Wakefield area).

Seem to recall that we stopped for an hour or so at some junction when the driver realised he didn't have route knowledge, and another had to be called out. Must have been some rare track if the driver didn't know it...

Six Bells Junction details at: http://www.sixbellsjunction.co.uk/80s/820413bc.htm

Looking at the photos it was a mixed 123/124 combination as well as the Met-Cam. In the first photo the third vehicle is a Cl123 DMSK, and in the third photo the second vehicle is a Cl123 TCK.

And later, even the S9xx Class 108 sets allocated to Swansea .

Yes, I'd forgotten about the Swansea sets. I think they where the 108 power twins, the power and trailer sets would have struggled with the Central Wales line.

It's the short term that goes first, Paul :jester:

Cardiff Canton allocated class 120 sets mostly worked in the Swansea area, and on the Central Wales route,

here are some in the early 1980s.

post-7081-0-91055200-1471975251_thumb.jpg

Approaching Swansea are two class 120 sets. Leading is Central Wales power-twin set C603 (50673, 50686) fitted with an extra headlamp. Behind is three car set C612 (50712, 59286, 50666). In the distance in Maliphant Carriage Sidings is a least one more class 120 set, 28/7/80

post-7081-0-47889600-1471975422_thumb.jpg

Next year at  Swansea is 3 car class 120 set C612 again, by now renumbered as C508 (50712, 59286, 50666) 7/7/81

While the debate continues as to whether the train on the right (up main) is actually a multiple unit, let's concentrate on the down working - a Class 31 hauling a failed Cl.123 Swindon Inter City unit.

Taken at the site of 'back of the box sidings' Pengam Junction 1976.

Some more DMUs at work west of Swansea

post-7081-0-14969300-1472140105_thumb.jpg

Set C616, (probably 51782, 59681, 51790), arriving at Llanelli on a Swansea to Pembroke Dock working,

was one of only two remaining class 120 sets allocated to Canton, 24/6/82

The replacements for the class 120 sets were more class 101 Met-Cam sets.

post-7081-0-84184100-1472140000_thumb.jpg

Here a pair of class 101s C800 (probably 51445, 51515) and C803 (probably 51450, 51522) call at Llanelli, 24/6/82

The Central Wales route was worked by power-twin DMUs, formerly class 120 sets and then class 101.

post-7081-0-89407900-1472140660_thumb.jpg

At Pantyffynon is a set stencilled B802, but it has lost the centre car and has been reformed as a power-twin, it is working the 10.08 Swansea - Shrewsbury.

I think the set had just been reallocated to Canton as the Summer 1982 Platform 5 pocket book showed set C802 was formed 51449, 51521 24/6/82.

What a brilliant thread! I've always had a soft spot for these first generation DMUs, I find them really characterful for some reason.

Thanks for all your contributions, last time I looked there were only 7 pages! I'm really enjoying the superb, atmospheric photos so please keep them coming - some great inspiration for my layout!

Cheers, Chris

Here are some more DMUs at work in South Wales in the 1980s.

First a 6-car DMU (unknown) special working seen calling at Bridgend

post-7081-0-98911600-1472833506_thumb.jpg

Class 120 set C615 (51781,59682, 51788) is coupled behind partly seen class 116 set C335

and is calling at Bridgend on a working from the Swansea direction heading towards Cardiff, 7/7/81

Now to Cardiff where we see two 3-car sets that have just come off Canton DMU depot to take up afternoon services.

post-7081-0-33042800-1472833918_thumb.jpg

Farthest from the camera a 3-car set waits to work the 16.00 departure for Aber, while class 116 set C312 (50843, 59355, 50896) will form the 16.15 service to Treherbert, 14/4/83

Departing Cardiff is another 3-car class 116 set.

post-7081-0-14407500-1472834174_thumb.jpg

Class 116 set C300 (50080, 59030, 50122) departs Cardiff Central while working the 12.08 Penarth to Rhymney service 14/4/81

cheers
