60091
142026 at Hexham this evening on the 18.56 to Middlesborough. At first glance this looked like some serious damage but it's only sealant from a cab roof repair.
RMweb Gold 4630 Posted August 25, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 25, 2019 A handful from over the last couple of days when I've been out photographing other things, but nevertheless managed to snap a Pacer or two. Huddersfield station, 24th August 2019. Northern 142095 waits at platform 4a on the rear of 2W12, 12.53 Huddersfield to Leeds... ...with 144019 at the front. 142067 is at platform 5 with 2O73, 13.03 Huddersfield to Castleford. A line up and comparison of front ends L to R 144019, 142067 & 195111. Brighouse station, 25th August 2019 Northern's 144012 arrives with 2K59, 12.29 Leeds to Huddersfield. 150137 was on the rear.
jessy1692
Was on York station Thurs night after the races, 142 in the Harrogate bay but it wasnt the 22.44. Alas, i cant recall the number, it had been a good day at the races... Surprised to see it though as i thought they had been banished from the Harrogate line

The 142s do occasionally still appear on the Harrogate line. I have found this is because a 170 or two is away for refurbishment. Although all of the Northern 170 refurbs are nearly complete so the days of seeing pacers on the Harrogate line will probably dwindle even more.

Definately, my office is right by the line in Harrogate and it has been a long time since i last saw/heard a 142 bouncing its way passed in normal working hours. Perhaps they sometimes come out at peak times occasionally still but the days of pacers are over id say. In Harrogate anyway. Cheers James

Cheers James I haven't seen many either on the Harrogate line either recently. If a 170 hasn't been available it has been a 150 and even a 158 and now rarely a pacer. Such a change since I first travelling regularly on the Harrogate line back in 2015 when the majority of services were operated by pacers. Just shows how four years can see such a significant change, especially considering how many pacers Northern have. I am really impressed with the now Northern, ex ScotRail 170s. After refurbishment they have wide comfy seats, sockets for charging phones at most seats, table seats for anyone wishing to eat or work on the train, display boards inside the train, fresh paint internally and externally and they are very clean. Also compared to most other Northern units they have three carriages which is definitely needed on the Harrogate line especially at peak times.
RMweb Gold Market65 Posted August 26, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 26, 2019 Those 170’s also work Sheffield, Hull to Bridlington too. A significant improvement on that service too which also was mainly Pacer operated. They are occasionally used on the Hull to York service to help get them between those two services. With the 195’s and 331’s, they are Northern’s best units. Best regards, Rob.

To be fair, the hourly fast-ish Sheffield-Hull-beyond services had been mostly 158s for a good few years prior to the arrival of the 170s. The stoppers however were predominantly pacers. Will some have to be stored elsewhere? Why would anyone want to store them? Would any railway around the world allow them to start operating now given their crashworthiness? dvdlcs
Silly question (from someone overseas), but where are the Class 143s? All the pictures seem to be of 142 and 144 units. Are the 143s not affected by this change, or have they all already gone?

Straight to the scrap yard, although I suppose you could stack them up Vic Berry style in the meantime! The suggestion is that they're in 'warm storage' so that, if necessary, some of them could be reactivated at short notice during the coming autumn when there's often a temporary shortage of serviceable rolling stock due to leaf induced wheel flats and a consequent need to visit a wheel lathe. Clearly any reactivation would be short-lived as the 142s should be gone by the end of December 2019. Edited August 28, 2019 by 4630 1

They all should meet the same withdrawal date. (No such thing as a silly question if you don't know the answer!) I imagine we have fewer correspondents contributing photos from those areas.
RMweb Premium Claude_Dreyfus Posted August 28, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted August 28, 2019 There are a few 143s scattered throughout this thread...pages 8, 10 and 12 have examples. I suspect cameras are pointing at the remaining HSTs and 37 workings in the West Country and South Wales at present.
RMweb Gold Market65 Posted August 29, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 29, 2019 The officially withdrawn class 142, 142005, is on it’s way to Booths for scrapping. This is from an informed source, not Face Ache or anywhere like that. But the same source has said that two 142’s, 021 and 022 have come out of warm storage for further use. If this is all correct, and I’ve no reason to suppose it isn’t, then the saga goes on, and perhaps some 142’s will see service into early 2020......
