Pace Yourself - photos of the final(?) Pacer countdown

I would have thought that the preservationists would have gone for the 3 car 144's, more space for punters, although I doubt how many will really want to ride one of these on jointed track!

Maybe they're all originally from Wigan & Bolton,  where anything other than a proper bus like CL142 would have been as rare as rocking horse doo-dah.

I personally refuse to believe that 3 car Pacers actually exist, surely they're all photoshopped?

Nothing wrong with jointed track and 14X units its the dip at the joint that is the problem!

Caught out at last - my original post on this thread 33 pages ago (!) was just a hoax.

They're actually 12-car trains with a buffet car*, but all those crowds of commuters on the news reports can only get on the first 2, as the platforms are too short. That's why the Photoshop fake news filter cuts them down to size automatically.

* The buffet serves Yorkshire tea in pint mugs, but only filled a third of the way up to prevent spillage.

I spent two hours on Leeds station today and in that time I only saw two Pacers.  And of those two, here's the one that I was able to photograph - 144005 arriving with 2L08, 09.03 Sheffield to Leeds.

Get 'em while you can folks.

Credit has to go to 4630 for this...

144005 was the last member of the class I required for haulage. Seeing that it was running services close to me made me hopeful I could catch it soon, and sure enough today I saw it working a Leeds - Sheffield service. Quick look on RTT told me when it would be working the other way, so I left home two hours earlier than needs be and caught it.

144005 at Elsecar

The first class I've recorded travelling on all of, not bad to say I've been on all 23 now in the five months since September!

I spent an hour or so on York yesterday.  There was a 2 car 144 in Platform 1 then the service from Sheffield pulled in consisting of a 2 car and a 3 car set. That made a 7 car 144 in the platform. This is the best I could manage with my phone.

A sight that probably won't be repeated very often.

Destined to preserved at the GCR(N), 144003 is seen at Barnsley working a Sheffield - Leeds service. I imagine it won't have the volume of passengers use it in preservation as it did on this service, standing down the corridors as usual on the peak time services.

Seen alongside 195001. Not the best photo as the 195 had just started moving and the camera refocused as the picture was taken.

Also nice to hear that 144004 has a future at the Aln Valley Railway.

I honestly think the 144 is far better styled than the 195, front end is awful

I always thought the 143 /144 looked cheap and soft.

195 continues it.

142s look solid enough, though, Whilst in an accident (and through recent scrapings) have demonstrated the opposite

Has anyone actually been killed in any pacer?  I wouldn't fancy hitting anything in one

I could almost ‘hear’ the smile in his voice when he got it for haulage, and it was a text that he sent me !!!!!!

Cheers,

Phil ( Jack’s Dad!!)

Phil.

I’d settle for a re-run of the 2-car in Northern Rail livery.  I wasn’t quick enough when they were first released.

I’ve got one completed model (weathered, passengers installed, etc) and also an untouched model which will eventually end up as a 3-car, or as 144012 in its evolution guise.

Cheers,

Phil.

Where’s the ‘envy’ button when you need it.

144012 would be good.  It’s evolution livery looked pretty smart IMHO when it was released.

Apart from trespassers on the lines, I recall reading that in 1987 a woman got caught in the doors of a 142 and dragged to her death at St. Annes On Sea station. The 142s then had the original Deans four leaf doors.

3-2-20. 1.56pm. Crows Nest Junc' Hindley. Nearly two months since my last sighting of a 142 and i Just about caught a glimpse and a pic' of 142 078 attached to 150 131. Was on the 2k68 Man'Vic' to Kirkby.

On weekdays, the 09:35 Kirkby  to Manchester Victoria usually has a 142 on it. Yesterday it was 142043 coupled to a 150. Until two Saturdays ago, the Saturday 10:35 Kirkby to Manchester Vic also had a 142 on it. However, on the last couple of Saturdays it has just been a single 150/1. You were lucky to capture 142078 with 150131 yesterday. That service would later be the 2:35pm departure from Kirkby to Manchester Victoria. From my observations, it is usually formed of a single 150. There are reports circulating that there are no more workings for 142s after 14th January.

144017 hit 37681 head on at Skipton in January 1992. The Pacer's front end was rebuilt, but the 37 was scrapped.

All Class 142s, 143s and 144s had Voith transmission fitted by late March 1991, but still retained Leyland TL11 engines. The TL11 engine was not very well matched to the Voith gearbox and they were very noisy and slow. At college, we used to dub them as being 'Voith-Bugged' because of this. A 144 pulling away at 0:29 secs illustrates the point. The Cummins LT10R engines fitted later had better acceleration and were much quieter.

Noisy, yes, but this one at 1:56 is none too sluggish:

- But my person preference is for the original TL11/SCG combo at 0:42!
