dseagull
Fnar Fnar. If you had the potential for an extra 2" on the width, would you put it at the front to increase depth, or the rear to er... increase depth(!) and potentially turn the part relief buildings into bigger ones?
RMweb Gold Oldddudders Posted November 9, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 9, 2019 In view of your plan, I would say on the front. The track layout suggests some shunting and passing manoeuvres, which are best conducted with a degree of separation from the front of the board. The low-relief buildings are there as a backcloth - their depth, +/- 2", adds little extra value. 1
RMweb Premium Kylestrome Posted November 9, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 9, 2019 Here’s a second vote for front. I made a similar decision on my layout and it was the better for it. David
doilum
Another vote for the front. Houghton Street had to be built to 22" rather than the original 24" plan. This made the foreground landscaping much harder and compromised. When it went to Telford the clever people at Artytype photoshopped the front and made it look as though I had 30" boards. Amazing.
RMweb Gold The Johnster Posted November 9, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 9, 2019 Front, and emphasise the need for the restricted track layout and small railway footprint by suggesting the start of a slope upwards towards the front, not too steep or high as you still need shunting access.
RMweb Premium Kris Posted November 9, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 9, 2019 I would also go for the front, it will make the layout feel more spacious.
RMweb Gold Harlequin Posted November 9, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 9, 2019 Front, definitely. Your rear is already sufficiently padded.
RMweb Premium TheQ Posted November 9, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 9, 2019 Front, adding scenic area even if just grass, makes the layout sit in the landscape more realistically. I added 10inches of clip on scenery to the front...

I think the favourite approach is clear... Now all we need to do is get this house move through so that I can get cracking.
Satan's Goldfish
Rear!.... no wait, I mean front. (For the reasons already mentioned above) Edited November 10, 2019 by Satan's Goldfish
RMweb Gold Right Away Posted November 10, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 10, 2019 (edited) Front. May slightly enhance viewing angles but definitely give the benefit of keeping rolling stock further from the edge. RMweb Gold 57xx Posted November 10, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 10, 2019 Definitely 2" extra up the front. The wife agrees. 1
