Popular Post rapidoandy
“We want the Titfield Thunderbolt!” - Rapido Trains UK launches range of The Titfield Thunderbolt models with five new 1:76 scale models fully licensed by STUDIOCANAL. Rapido Trains UK is delighted to reveal a range of models inspired by The Titfield Thunderbolt that will be available in time to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the film’s release in 2023. These will be the most accurate The Titfield Thunderbolt models ever produced and are being developed with full co-operation of STUDIOCANAL, which owns the rights to this seminal railway film. (Work in progress CAD image of Thunderbolt, Loriot Y and Dan's House) The Titfield Thunderbolt tells the story of group of villagers determined to save their branch line after British Railways announces its closure. When a rival bus company sabotages the newly acquired train prior to an official inspection, the villagers resurrect the line’s first locomotive, Thunderbolt, and, against great odds, obtain permission to keep their line open. The story was inspired by the group of enthusiasts, led by Tom Rolt, who took over the 2ft 3in gauge Talyllyn Railway in 1951 and thus kick-started the railway preservation movement. The film was the first of Ealing Studios’ famous ‘Ealing comedies’ to be filmed in colour and it was released in March 1953. (Work in progress CAD image) We will produce five new ‘OO’ gauge models: · Thunderbolt, aka Liverpool & Manchester Railway 0-4-2 Lion · The Buffet Car, aka Great Eastern Railway Diagram 603 No. 8 · No. W68740, GWR Diagram AA20 ‘Toad’ brakevan · ‘Dan’s House’, aka GWR ‘Loriot Y’ No. 41989 with fictitious Victorian coach body · Pearce & Crump’s coach GAM338, aka Bedford OB with Duple Vista body (Image courtesy of J Kinnard) Our Titfield models will be available in three packs: · Pack 1 (SKU922001)is a standard pack, containing Thunderbolt, ‘Dan’s House’ and Loriot Y with No. W68740. · Pack 2 (SKU922002) is a deluxe pack, containing sound-fitted Thunderbolt, Dan’s House and Loriot with W67840 plus 4mm:1ft scale figures and commemorative booklet. · Pack 3 (SKU 922003) contains the Buffet Car and No. W68740, plus 4mm:1ft scale figures. · The Bedford OB will be available as a standalone model in full Pearce & Crump livery (SKU920001). Work is well underway with Lion, Loriot Y and ‘Dan’s House’ at an advanced stage of development. (3D printed and hand painted test of the interior to give an idea of what may be possible) All models will be in stock by March 6 2023, the 70th anniversary of the film’s release, although it is expected that some models will be available during 2022. All models, including film and non-film versions will be available through Rapido Trains UK stockists or direct from www.rapidotrains.co.uk Identities and guises for non-Titfield models – as well as prices for all models – are still to be confirmed. 28

RMweb Gold Bucoops Posted April 1, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 1, 2021 (edited) Just read the email - love it Can't really afford it now but if an instalments thing is available I'll go for a full set of the train as I love the film and more than happy to invoke rule 1. edit: Just checked and I bought the DVD April last year but only actually watched it in January - first time in 30 years or so. I'd forgotten how good it was but definitely something in the water for two companies to go for the rights. Edited April 1, 2021 by Bucoops
Edwardian
Well now. That is excellent news. Well done Rapido. I am very attracted to the Titfield themed sets. Rule No.1 frippery, of course, but they will be irresistibly superb and I'm all for the sort of unalloyed fun they represent. But this, this appears to be a render of Lion (not in the Thunderbolt guise). If this is released, I think, for me, the Hornby version is likely to be relegated to happy hacking. The Alpha Lion: If you look at the CAD you will see the different images show some subtle differences. There are quite a number between Lion in 1930, Thunderbolt in the film and Lion now. rapidoandy
For anyone that asks about the screws on the ends of the axles : To make servicing the model, and assembly etc easier this is probably the best solution. However we will be including etches in a poly bag that include a number (and some spare) of crank axle covers that can be carefully glued in place to cover the screw to give an authentic look for those who wish it. Remember they will be tiny! 5 1 1

willjam39
Wonderful Titfield is a film I hold dearly and look forward to the release! Just to check, pack three is just the buffet coach and toad, not the whole set 1 plus these two items?

Jammy2305
Is there provision for GER No.8 to be released as a GER vehicle without the buffet section? Or will it only be tooled as per the film (and as represented by No.7 in pres?)
RMweb Gold TheSignalEngineer Posted April 1, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 1, 2021 Looking forward some after-film issues. I was looking at building a Loriot last week but held off buying a kit and an AA20 Toad will be a nice addition. 1

HonestTom
Out of curiosity, are there any plans to release the models in their "civilian" identities, e.g. the coach in GER livery? I'll no doubt be picking up a Great Eastern coach either way. EDIT: Sorry, this thread moves fast, I didn't see that the question had already been asked Edited April 1, 2021 by HonestTom
Edwardian
42 minutes ago, mdvle said: Rapido UK News 3 says Lion is being done in post-1928 condition. Anthony Dawson doesn't think much of the accuracy of any of the L&M replicas from the period, and has Views concerning the brass-domed firebox put on the restored Lion. I understand that it is not thought the boiler on Lion when she was 'found' was original in any case, and I further understand that the intention in 1930 was to restore her to 1840s condition. How accurate that was, I wouldn't like to say, however, It is probably fair to say that the only period Lion certainty looked like this is post-restoration. Having said that, the picture below (posted by Devo63) looks awfully like the Todd Kitson & Laird 0-4-2s of the ilk supplied to the L&M. Merely the boiler fittings and some minor details differ. Lo and behold, it appears to have a rather similar firebox cover, suggesting that the choice made in the case of Lion in 1930 might not have been inappropriate. That said, look carefully and it becomes apparent that what looks like the 'hay stack' firebox is actually further back than Lion's and occupying the footplate, which may suggest that isn't what we are seeing. At any rate, the picture might support the idea that some similar locos may have run with such fireboxes at some stage of their lives, though, clearly Stephenson's Samson type 0-4-2s did not when built. 38 minutes ago, rapidoandy said: We have some cunning plans...
