RMweb Gold Stubby47 Posted July 23, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 23, 2021 Track glue has dried, and the points are nicely immobile. Next I can either add more cork and track, or upturn the board and install the 1st point motor and gubbins. 4

The reason I ask is that it looks damn good on the HC and could look OK on my Bridge 466 attempt. 2
Andrew P
Nice flow of Pointwork there young man, I don't do strait track if I can help it. Mind you if I did it would probably come out like a banana anyway. 1 3
RMweb Gold Stubby47 Posted July 24, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 24, 2021 A bit of detail about the point gubbins. First some bits: plastic triangle corner strengthener, some lengths of dowel, paper clips and small headed nails. The plastic covers have two holes enlargened, so the dowel slides through easily. A paper clip is straightened, pushed through a drilled hole and the end wrapped around the dowel. The dowel is passed through one of the corners and a small nail tapped in a right angles to the paper clip. More to follow... 4 2
RMweb Gold Stubby47 Posted July 25, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 25, 2021 The first pair of point actuators are in place, but not fully connected. Observations so far: The paper clip might be too weak and possibly be replaced by a stiffer wire. The mounting of the Cobalt is in the best place to give the longest throw, whilst still allowing the choc blocks to be reasonably close. 1 5 2

RMweb Premium Mallard60022 Posted July 26, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted July 26, 2021 (edited) That's clever mate. I used something a bit like that for the same motor that couldn't sit under the point . MIne was not as crafty though; just a straight bit of PCB (is that the thing for soldering to track for sleepers?) doing a simple push pull job on the Peco point sticky out bit, drilled and pinned to the PCB. The Point rod just went through a hole on the other end of the PCB (about 3 inches long and it sits in a groove, retained by Staples, in the Cork on my board (s). Just covered it in masking Tape for when scenics scattered on top. Seems to work OK and I dun it myself P Edited July 26, 2021 by Mallard60022 6
RMweb Gold Stubby47 Posted August 1, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted August 1, 2021 Well, that didn't work. Despite the minimum movement required to change the point, there was far too much mechanical loss in the mechanism between the tie bar and the motor. The paper clip was replaced with a stiff nail, the motor was repositioned, but all to no avail. So, I did this. However, this does not mean the idea is dead, it just needs refining to remove the issues.

RMweb Gold Donw Posted August 1, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 1, 2021 In order to operate some turnouts on one layout I fitted a length of plastruct tubing on the baseboard surface from the hiding place of a tortoise to the stretcher bar/sleeper. And then put bras rod through the tube to operate the tiebar. If there is nothing to restrain the rod/wire it either needs to be very thick to avoid flexing and hence loss of movement. If you are using wire in tube the tube needs to be fixed to a surface. Don 2 1
