Evening fellow ER’s and good wishes and hope that all are staying safe and healthy.

 

Am I the only one who gets a sense of foreboding daily at around 5pm? These news conferences seem to bring more and more bad news. Today’s was to be expected and it remains to be seen how long the schools remain shut. I suspect that they may not reopen until after the summer. At present we await news from both schools. Our daughter will certainly be off, and she was distraught at the news, she loves school. As yet we are unsure if foster child falls into the vulnerable category and will be able to attend her school. Time will tell and we will deal with either outcome. Both children are of an age that I have recent teaching experience of so there may be a retrieving of old teaching resources from the garage.

 

Today was a day off from the shop. Sarah decreed it was essential to head into the city centre for required supplies. These included duvet covers, clothes for the children, toys, flannels and pet food. In my opinion only one of those was essential and could have been located without braving the shopping centre. Cross words were exchanged!  That said, it was a surreal experience. Clearly people in Derby are generally following the guidance. Whilst shops remain open, there were very few people around. If anyone has experienced Primark on a usual day (I hate the place), the comparison to today was unbelievable. It really felt eerie.

 

At present, the plan is to head to the shop for a few hours after the school run tomorrow. If nothing else I can isolate and do the marking. Two customers are due to phone or Skype about possible orders so that is something. A call to the insurers about whether would cover me for any enforced closure is also on the agenda. I am not confident. Like many business owners I am awaiting more details about the government support program. That, I believe, is due next month.

Good evening everyone 

 

The rain was continuing to fall, albeit very lightly as I walked to the swimming pool, it didn’t stop until sometime in the afternoon. The new reception area is now open and very nice it looks too. I managed 80 lengths, 6 of which were under water, averaging about 40 seconds each. It was very quiet in the pool today, the maximum number in the water at any one time was 4! For the first 20-25 minutes I had the pool to myself! 

 

After I’d showered and changed, I finished making the fruit tea loaf that I’d left soaking overnight. The aroma whilst we ate dinner was absolutely lovely. 

 

After dinner I read a magazine before setting off to pick up Evie and Max, then went on to Vickie and Ian’s to pick up Ava. On the menu tonight was pasta and meatballs, which went down very well, this was followed by cake and ice cream.

 

In other news, Charlie has been laid off, luckily on full pay and Ian’s hours have been reduced as the business that stayed open until late early in the evening/morning has temporarily closed, so he is getting home around 12:30 in the morning instead of 3-4 o’clock. Vickie may well start working from home next week, but there will have to be someone in the office to send out invoices and pay bills etc. We’ve offered to look after the kids if required, but that is looking like it won’t be necessary.

My layout is called Deadmans Lane [*] - good job it didn't go to Ally Pally.

 

[*] DL is an actual road name in Derby The name relates to The Great Plague in 1665. Andy Leopard will be familiar with the location. (The buildings on the right are part of the RTC site at Derby)

Our neighbours made it back today about 4 pm. A little late as we're only 3 hours from the border, and they were about an hour past that. Dayle said Hi; they have 14 days CB coming up. 

Found that the good bookstore in town is now shut but will deliver books. Big pet food store was also shut when we went -- didn't check hours.

Just been exchanging messages with brother in HK  on something that I had already planned ot try and do this morning. With three people now to be staying at Mums her supply of toilet rolls food and cleaning stuff wont last very long so I will try and get what I can from Sainsburys.

While we're trying to avoid crowds, we feel we do have to get outside each day. So we have been taking advantage of the local woods and lakes. Other people are doing the same, but there's plenty of space to maintain the prescribed 6 feet separation. Here's a few pictures of where we've been over the last 3 or 4 days:

Morning All,

 

I hope that all ERs are fairing well.  It has been a strange few days which is why I haven't been posting.

 

We aren't on lockdown (yet) but all non-essential travel have been curtailed, most flights are cancelled and we are being advised to work from home and not go out wherever possible - All non-essential shops (excluding supermarkets, petrol stations, pet stores etc) are closed.  I have been in the office, doing a lot on getting the infrastructure ready that I need to work from home.  As I work in what is classed as a critical facility - there are still quite a few colleagues around.

 

Last night, I had to visit five supermarkets before I could get everything that we needed for the weekly shop.  We didn't stock up on anything because we everyone was being told that it wasn't necessary.  However, doing our weekly shop on tuesday night, the supermarket had no loo roll, no eggs, no flour, no pasta, no tinned vegetables, very few frozen vegetables and no sugar.  Yesterday, I went around five more supermarkets before I could get everything we needed - except loo roll.  That is nowhere to be found.

 

Stay healthy everyone - we live in interesting times...

Oh - Nearly forgot.  The weather is fantastic!  Blue sky and spring in the air.

They are only delivering locally but fear not, someone on eBay is selling them for $150.

Greetings one and all

 

There is egg on my face.  Yesterday, after much agonising, I cancelled my accommodation in Dublin.  I was to have gone there at the end of June but there was too much uncertainty involved, not only about getting to and from Dublin but whether Dublin Pride will happen. That is, after all, the reason for my visit.  For a few days I had thought that the trip could be made worthwhile, even without Pride.  What finally convinced me to postpone it was hearing part of the Taoiseach’s broadcast in the wee small hours of yesterday morning.  I am now determined to make the trip in June 2021 but it would be very foolish of me to use expressions such as “come hell or high water” again.  For the moment I am despondent but I’ll get over it.

 

Some will have mixed feelings about other victims of that ruddy virus.  Glastonbury is off and the Eurovision Song Contest has been cancelled.  Filming of some BBC TV drama has been affected.  Among the consequences is the decision to cut EastEnders to two episodes a week.   I know I watch too much TV, with a knock-on effect on how much useful stuff I get to do, but it will be interesting to see how the yawning gaps in the schedules will be plugged.  Meanwhile life goes on, after a fashion.  This morning I will attempt a fodder run.  I may be some time.
