I will be quite honest here IMO this show looks more like a trade show with layouts given that the traders out number the layouts by almost 3-1. Yes you have an expensive good quality venue and I accept that the layouts will be of a high standard & quality however at first glance the imbalance between traders and layouts is somewhat off putting.

I attended the Show last year and had some similar concerns however I did enjoy it. I also intend to visit the Show again this year and I sincerely hope my fears are unfounded and that it is a successful show for all concerned.

Afraid I couldn't disagree more. In my opinion Railex is consistently one of the best shows of the year and although we are lucky enough to exhibit there regularly in some capacity or another it is one of the few shows I would travel some distance to attend.

I had never really thought about the ratio of layouts to traders but have never thought it to be a problem. On the contrary, like the layouts, the quality and variety of the trade is very high with very few box shifters and lots of specialist traders aimed at modellers - for me having all these specialists under one roof is an added attraction. In terms of trade it is much more akin to the specialist scale and society shows.

As David said to me earlier this year, many of the layouts this year are large and therefore the number of them is small compared to last year. The trade is always good and compliments the layouts ,so no need to complain folks ,it will still be worth a visit!

I have to agree, an outstanding show. I have attended for the last couple of years, traveling up from Plymouth via the smoke by train and staying in London or Aylesbury. The quality of the layouts is good, as is the trade. It's good to see the level of small trader support at a show of this size without the endless parade of box shifters that attend a lot of shows these days.

My bank manager tends not to be to happy on my return. I hope to get the chance to attend this year, but I will have to go by car this year, if I can go.

Cheers SS

At Railex the trade do out number the layouts although many of the small traders only take a six foot table while the layouts can be up to fifty foot long so the frontage of layouts compared to trade is about the same, Scaleforum which is moving to the same venue only has ten layouts and around fifty taders.

The costing of running the show has to be balanced against income and expenditure, and hopefully we pay to get layouts that either travel quite a distance or are rarly seen, we have one layout coming from Holland this year and others that not seen down south.

For me the trade is as much part of the show experience as the layouts especially when there are plenty of specialised traders. Ok many will not be what I model but it is often the only way to see some of these items in the lfesh to see if they are suitable especailly nowadays were well stocked model shops are far and few in between, more so in the South East were I am.

Looking forward to RAILEX not only for bringing the layout but also for the trade.

We try an ensure all information regarding Railex is easy to get from what layouts and trade are attending to how to get there, plus we post a floor plan nearer the date of the show, about the only thing we don't list is what is on the cafe menu! Hopefully we are honest and up front on what the show is all about, and if any one has questions I can be contacted by post, email or phone, Most people are happy with what we do but I do try and ensure any moans and groans are taken on board and if we can do something about it we will do.

Changes for this year will be the new access road is now open so will offer a quicker way in to the stadium from the main road, this will be part of a one way system with the exit via Harvey Road.

We hope to run our vintage bus from the station to the stadium more frequently during the first few hours that the show is open.

Dependent on what the bus owners say we will bring the bus right into the stadium grounds as there in now a dedicated bus stop outside the door.

I think Jerry hits the nail squarely on the head, I make a special effort to travel up from West Cornwall for Railex every year and have also exhibited there in the past and this is one of the few shows I would make the effort to travel long-distance and stay overnight to visit. Why not make a weekend of it and visit Pendon as well??

As David says, there's plenty of opportunity to make a weekend of it. As it's a bank holiday weekend, Pendon is open from 11am to 5.30pm on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Throughout 2013, we're again running our very popular offer in conjunction with Didcot Railway Centre and Chinnor & Princes Risborough Railway. Paying visitors get a money off admission voucher for all three attractions.

The Pendon information stand will also be at Railex and Bill and his team will be very happy to tell you about everything that's on offer.

Has that changed as I think the last voucher we had was the Cholsey & Wallingford Railway - not Chinnor?

Yes it's changed from 2012. Last year was Cholsey & Wallingford but this year it's Chinnor & Princes Risborough.

I was advised that Bucks Hill will come in a large lorry while the new backsene for it will come in another van as its so big!

Apparently the layout looks completly different from when it apeared at Railex in 2008 it is a mamoth job to get it to Railex and I expect it is unlikely to be exibited much in the future if not at all, so Railex this year is the place to see it.

I think RAILEX is consistantly the best show in the south of England, without exception.

  • 3 weeks later...

Remember this year there is a new direct approach road direct in from the B4443 no more driving round the housing estate, I doubt if sat nav or road signs would have been updated by Railex but we will put our yellow Railex sign to help you. We still recommend car visitors park in the Friars croft car park behind Morrisons and opposite the Aylesbury Depot and catch our vintage bus in, we hope we will be able to bring the bus in to the stadium grounds dependent on if the bus can through, Viki my other half and her friend Suzi will be on the bus selling programmes this year hopefully in matching uniforms!
