Level crossing stupidity...

There is a big sign on the river bank, in Great Yarmouth, No hireboats beyond this point.

Every year some hirers have to be escorted back from heading towards the north sea.. In one of these.

Not all hirers in any transport have any sense..

Didn't someone once manage to get a canal narrowboat out into the North Sea?

yep, came out of the Ouse near Kings Lynn, washed ashore on Great Yarmouth Beach and wrecked.

In the right conditions and with the right knowledge it's quite easy to take such a boat out to sea. But getting such an unseaworthy boat across the Bar at GY takes more skill .

A hire boat was stolen once and was found many years later (repainted) down on the Medway.

It isn't just level crossing's that can't be used safely..

(There is a level crossing at this location too)

Hmmm, why is it that there are always calls for things to change (at a cost to all) to accommodate the actions of a few idiots?

When you drive up to the entrance to Eurotunnel you go under a bar which (I think) is set at 6ft 6ins and despite my car being well under that I always involuntary duck as we go under it! I wonder if these drivers just have no sense of height to make such stupid basic mistakes...

I am familiar with that bridge - used it (in a car) many times. There are quite prominent over height warnings on both approaches. The road is also not really conducive to LGV traffic although large vehicles do deliver to one or two farms along it, gaining access from the Spencer's Lane End.

So they've been hit in the face by all the chains hanging from the foot bridge imediately in front,, did they not think they were there for a reason?

At least the swan is showing suitable contempt and lack of interest.

Different country, but on the occasions I've rented trucks here, both the rental contract, and big, prominent signs in the cab have made it very clear indeed that any damage caused by ignoring maximum height warnings is the renter's responsibility.

Agreed, there is the notorious Montague Street bridge in South Melbourne, where regularly there are bridge hits, including containers being knocked off.

I do work for a car/truck hire business down the road from it. When any one hires a truck, before handing the keys over, the staff take them out the front and indicate the bridge, with advice that it doesn't fit! They are also warned that the insurance, specifically excludes overhead damage.

The current owner told me that he is yet to lose one of his trucks, although plenty of similar vehicles have come to grief. I did read something from a previous owner of the business, that his customers crashed a few.

There are apparently 28 large signs, gantries & flashing lights with height detectors.

What happens when some clart hits the beam hard enough that it is dislodged into (or onto) a car coming in the opposite direction?

It could be a narrow one way area, also if the jobs done correctly it will not collapse on the vehicle..........easy enough to put a speed restriction chicane to make sure vehicles travel slow enough.

It’s only because of impatient idiots who cannot be arsed to wait at the level crossing

This is the shortest of several compilations of incidents at this bridge.

Unfortunately no, there is no massive beam they hit, only a IR beam they break before charging into the bridge with the warning lights glaring away, again it just shows if there is no real PHYSICAL restriction people will just go on ignoring signs, regardless.

How far from the bridge are the chains (looks like a bit of a zoom lens foreshortening the picture)? They need to be far enough away to give time to reverse or turn, and I can't imagine most boats are particularly responsive.

The speed limit is 4 MPH and you should be doing a lot less than that when you approach, as there may be a boat coming the other way, which is at an angle so you don't see them till the last minute. There is time to stop if proceeding correctly..

Oh and it's against hire craft rules to go under that bridge without using the pilot.

The problem with  that bridge is it's on a down grade with a light controlled crossroad with little in the way of room for early warning obstacles to strike.

As this is a railway thread I'd better question whether Network Southeast really operated class 82s.

intersting that, although the boat is fully marked up as a hire company boat, that's a visiting boat registration number, (local boats are a single etter and 3 digits)

There's obviously a detector that switches on the big illuminated sign telling overheight vehicles to turn - why not wire that into the 'stop' phase of the traffic lights too ??!?

They do. More recent videos (they changed it ~2017) show that the lights turn red to stop trucks to give them a chance to see the sign. There is at least one video of a truck blowing through the red light and then ripping the top off their trailer...

Loads of them actually.

The sequence is:

Overheight vehicle detected - Warning sign lights up & traffic lights change to red - pause - warning sign changes to flashing & traffic lights change to green.

If that's not enough the numpties shouldn't be on the road. Plenty seem to see the red light as a challenge to beat, the bridge always wins!

Very rare to hear local residents asking for a bridge to  be closed & all traffic to use level crossing.... :scratch_one-s_head_mini:

As boxbrownie says, a robust beam well before would stop damage to the bridge. Then wait for complaints about collateral damage to traffic in the other direction!

Any traffic coming in the other direction would have already hit the bridge (unless there is a side road between the bridge and the beam)

If you watch the video closely, a fair proportion of the trucks that hit the bridge seemed to be running the amber light anyway!  (I think the one at about 3:30 was clearly pushing his luck.)

One could get the impression that "white truck man" is the U.S. equivalent of "white van man" over here for poor decision making behind the wheel.
