Every year some hirers have to be escorted back from heading towards the north sea.. In one of these. In the right conditions and with the right knowledge it's quite easy to take such a boat out to sea. But getting such an unseaworthy boat across the Bar at GY takes more skill . Hobby Posted October 23, 2019 Share Posted October 23, 2019 When you drive up to the entrance to Eurotunnel you go under a bar which (I think) is set at 6ft 6ins and despite my car being well under that I always involuntary duck as we go under it! There are quite prominent over height warnings on both approaches. The current owner told me that he is yet to lose one of his trucks, although plenty of similar vehicles have come to grief. I did read something from a previous owner of the business, that his customers crashed a few. How far from the bridge are the chains (looks like a bit of a zoom lens foreshortening the picture)? There is time to stop if proceeding correctly.. Oh and it's against hire craft rules to go under that bridge without using the pilot. The problem with that bridge is it's on a down grade with a light controlled crossroad with little in the way of room for early warning obstacles to strike. The sequence is: Overheight vehicle detected - Warning sign lights up & traffic lights change to red - pause - warning sign changes to flashing & traffic lights change to green. If that's not enough the numpties shouldn't be on the road. Plenty seem to see the red light as a challenge to beat, the bridge always wins! If you watch the video closely, a fair proportion of the trucks that hit the bridge seemed to be running the amber light anyway! (I think the one at about 3:30 was clearly pushing his luck.) One could get the impression that "white truck man" is the U.S. equivalent of "white van man" over here for poor decision making behind the wheel.
