Jim’s “out and about with GBRf” thread

Recommended Posts

Hi Jim
Sorry to hear of your loss, hope all are OK.

For the past two days I have been trying to photograph this train. Went out yesterday to the road overbridge over the branch but it wasn't running.

Went out today and stood with a small group of enthusiasts but the train had been diverted via Newton le Willows due to problems in the St Helens area.
Saw it go past on the WCML in the distance but it headed to Springs Branch, presumably to run around as it was facing the wrong way. I waited for an hour then had to leave as I had a meeting to go to.

The joys of railways eh? So no luck so far but will try again...
Good to see the line in use again though, and that 60 does look smart!
Photo from GBRF on Twitter.

Keep your stories coming :-)
All the best
Pete

Good looking loco is 60095, I like the livery.

Nice to see the Haydock branch back in use, I worked opposite it back 2004-9, though trains were rare then also.

The Haydock Branch was once part of the Great Central Railway Lowton to St Helens branch off the Wigan Junction railway, a very interesting set of lines. In later years the connection to the WCML was built to enable oil trains to reach the then new Shell oil terminal at Haydock, this closed in the late 70's (I think) and was replaced by a pipeline. It also served Golborne metals (scrap trains) and Golborne Colliery. When these closed the line was again cut back to Edge Lane, the present end of line. The reversal line to the plant was also built many years ago to serve a colliery, closed, lifted and rebuilt.

There is an excellent book about it by Dennis sweeney, Tri-angle publications. Lots of history, plans and photos.

Ah yes, that 175 looks good in its new Greater Anglia white-with-a-bit-of-red livery.  No, sorry, its the new Virgin white-with-a-bit-of-red colours isn't it...?  Oh, no, wait, it's another completely different organisation, how could I mistake the new white-with-a-bit-of-red Welsh livery for anything else?  Silly me.

Some from yesterday, a different take in my ‘Masborough shots, I noticed an access gate was open to the old platform so I checked with the signaller it was safe to cross over and went to shut it, as it happened it went into a locked compound anyway so no one could get through but I managed to get a couple of shots from the opposite side of the track

The station sure looks better form the main road side than it does from the tracks, it’s an Indian restaurant

And back into coleshill, except my relief had gone to Landor st so I had to carry on to there with it!

Hi Jim,

Nice photos as usual. An Indian restaurant has been in the old station building for a number of years but I'm not certain if it has been the same one all the time.

I spoke with the owner one day when he came up on the bridge to see a Flying Scotsman. He said he'd toyed with the idea of alfresco dining on the platform side, but the NR people were reluctant to allow that side to be opened up (understandably).

I've never dined there, but it's been in operation for a good few years under the same name, so it can't be that bad!
