RMweb Gold DaveF Posted January 28, 2017 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 28, 2017 Quite often when travelling around Switzerland I would find myself either passing through, or changing trains, at Olten. Several times I spent an hour or two there taking photos. Switzerland is not all about mountains, as those of you who do not know the country will find out as this thread progresses. Yesterday I was checking the number of photos I have left for this thread, just for Switzerland in the summer of 1988 there are still over 800 to post. RMweb Premium melmerby Posted January 28, 2017 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 28, 2017 (edited) I spotted a bit of news regarding Russian trains. There has recently started a new regular through service from Moscow, Kursk Station to Berlin, Ostbahnhof by Russian Railways (RZD) using a Talgo System gauge-changing train. http://www.railwaygazette.com/news/passenger/single-view/view/moscow-berlin-talgo-starts-on-december-17.html Still need to change the loco though! RMweb Gold DaveF Posted January 29, 2017 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 29, 2017 Photos from the Seetalbahn today. It runs from Emmenbrücke to Lenzburg. At Emmenbrücke trains from Luzern had to reverse at this time to gain access to the Seetalbahn, which ran alongside the road for much of its length. The remainimng photos were taken at Hochdorf, part of the way along the line. RMweb Premium 31A Posted January 30, 2017 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 30, 2017 Thanks Dave, why did I not think of looking in a timetable! If I rummage around I'll probably find a Thomas Cook from that period. To try and answer my own query then, I had a look through the library. Couldn't find a 1988 Thomas Cooks, but did find the May 1990 edition, which gives both the winter and summer timetables for that year. At that time, there was a Russian sleeping car (or cars) attached to Swiss train 728 1439 Interlaken Ost-Basel SBB which called at Olten 1631-1633; looks as though the sleepers were attached at Bern where there was an 18 minute station stop. The sleepers originated from Bern, Geneve or even Madrid depending on the day of the week. The Moscow portion started at Bern on Tuesdays and Saturdays, Geneve on Wednesdays and Sundays, and Madrid on Saturdays (passing through Switzerland the following day). it went forward from Basel as D359, and attached / detached other vehicles in Frankfurt and Berlin. Those were the days!

RMweb Gold DaveF Posted February 1, 2017 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 1, 2017 When you travel from Filisur to Davos Platz and then on to Klosters on the Rhätische Bahn you pass through several stations on the way with Davos as a part of their name. RMweb Gold DaveF Posted February 3, 2017 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 3, 2017 Still in Switzerland with a visit to Koblenz this afternoon which can now be reached by train from Eglisau to the west and Turgi to the south. When I was there you could also travel from Stein Säckingen, but that line is now out of use between Laufenberg and Koblenz. There is also the line across the Rhein to Waldshut, in Germany. This explains the DB railbus in one of the photos. RMweb Gold DaveF Posted February 7, 2017 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 7, 2017 I know I'm going to regret asking, but why is a train from Brig to Romanshorn going via Montreux rather than Spiez? Presumably it went via Neuchatel as was in reality two services joined together? I don't know if it is a feature of the current timetable but there were a number of trains in the 1988 (and after) timetable which did that. I suspect they were really a typically Swiss complex stock working which "just happened" to form a useful through train - if you were not in a hurry. I've just had a look at the 1997/8 timetable (the only one I've kept over the years). In it the train from Winterthur to Romanshorn, leaving at 38 min past each hour is shown as originating on even hours (from Winterthur) from Geneve Aeroport, odd hours from either Lausanne or Brig. Example: Train IR1515 dep Brig 06.29 Lausanne 08.07 Neuchatel 08.59 Biel/Bienne 9.21 Zurich arr 10.54 dep 11.10 Winterthur 11.36 Frauenfeld 11.49/50 Weinfelden 12.02/03 Amriswil 12.15 Romanshorn 12.22 David

EddieB
IIRC the SNCF numbering scheme for loco's is as follows: pure DC loco's are numbered below 10000 pure AC loco's are numbered above 15000 Multi-courante series are a combination: add the DC and AC numbers to get the MC number. (this also goes if there is no equivalent DC/AC model, SNCF assigns a 'faux' number series to it) IIRC the same goes for their EMU sets, not TGV's. (those are all MC, as the classic lines are mainly DC while the LGV's are all AC) The AC locomotive series actually started at 10001 and while it was sometimes the case that DC + AC numbers could be added, it wasn't necessarily always the case. The BB20101 and BB20201 were dual-system French AC + German AC locos.
