C17543

Those lengths of rail look dangerously close to fouling the line, or are they fixed down to hold the curve?

Keith

Hi. They look as if they have just been left there, either just before or just after some re-railing work.

Best regards,

Rob.

They were indeed just lying there.

At the time the former East Germany had a somewhat different attitude towards Health and Safety.

When we consider the speed of the trains and the specific weight of steel (approximately 7.85g/mm3) I do not see a big problem of the rails being moved by the slipstream... :smile_mini2:

OK, may be I have grown up in a time before extreme H&S measures...

The German name for these cars is Rollwagen or Rollböcke. You find them at companies like Glöckner or Weinert (and they have the price of a small locomotive....) :)

These are Rollwagen - although serving the same purpose, Rollböcke were two-axle trucks, each carrying a single axle of a SG wagon. They were also used in the Harz, but only for short distance traffic e.g. from Wernigerode to serve the various factory sidings as far as Hasserode and also, I presume, from Nordhausen to the various sidings within the town, but I spent very little time at that end of the line so I can't speak from personal observation.

Netzburg today.  No it isn't, it is by the Behre viaduct near Ilfeld   Many thanks to Bill Jamieson for the information.

The Behre viaduct near Ilfeld is the nearest place to the level crossing just to the north of Ilfeld, which is between Eisfelder Talmuhle and Nordhausen.

There is also a photo at Nordhausen.

What is that contraption in the last photo?  Looks like a steam loco tender, but is it welded to the wagon chassis and are those seats or just guard rails?

According to the Transpress book "Harzquer- und Brockenbahn" (1990 edition), it was indeed an old tender, mounted on Rollwagen No. 99 06 71, and served as a water carrier for the fire-fighting train (dient als Wasserwagen für Feuerlöschzug).

Dave,

I'll happily be proved wrong, but I've never come across this location being called Netzburg before. There is a hill called the Netzberg on the west side of the line a bit to the north, but usually the location is referred to as "the Behre viaduct near Ilfeld". Until 1924 there was a coal mine very close by (is it not a 'heritage' site these days? - it's a few years since I've travelled over the line and my memory is a bit hazy) - the Steinkohlengrube " Wentzelzeche Teutschenthal" but that would be a bit of a mouthful!

Cheers,

Bill

PS No, it looks to be another old mine nearer Netzkater that is now a tourist attraction.

Bill,

Many thanks for the information, I'm amending the captions.

At the time there was no one about to ask the name.  My hotel was in Braunlage and of course the people there didn't know the name.

I never thought of looking in my book on the Harzer Schmalspur Bahn (Ziegelgansberger and Roper), Transpress as mentioned in post 812

That day was my only visit to that part of the railway so I don't really know the area at all well.

Just a short distance from Bad Harzburg is Goslar, where we are for today's photos.

Another view of the short semaphore under the canopy at Goslar, which was still there in 2014 (as were the 218s, although I'm not sure whether they still are!):

Nice shots of familiar places.

Those of the Harz are particularly relevent to me at the moment for two reasons. First, I'm currently working on making some cine film I took there in 1988 into a digital film, I'll share it when finished. Second, I'm building a G-scale model based on the Harz and the station shots are really usefull. Any more station building shots would be fantastic.
