RMweb Premium melmerby Posted February 28, 2017 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 28, 2017 Those dome top carriages really look massive compared to today's European rolling stock! Another nice set of pictures, as usual. Keith

RMweb Gold DaveF Posted March 3, 2017 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted March 3, 2017 I've been continuing to work on sorting out photos for this thread, the latest are from Germany in 1992. So we'll leave Switzerland for a while and visit the narrow gauge railways in the Harz. Today's photos are of Alexisbad, on the Selketalbahn, which runs from Gernrode to Eisfelder Talmuhle. Alexisbad is the junction for the line to Harzgerode. RMweb Gold DaveF Posted March 4, 2017 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted March 4, 2017 (edited) The Selketal Bahn again today, this time at the northern terminus, Gernrode. There is also a standard gauge line through Gernrode, from Quedlingburg to Frose. It was a very hot day when I visited, with the temperature well into the 30s. All the railway staff were in the station building playing cards. RMweb Gold tetsudofan Posted March 4, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 4, 2017 David, Interesting pics from the Harz, amazing how the rolling stock and infrastructure looks quite tatty when compared with todays HSB. One of my regrets is that I never made it to the Harz before the Wall came down. Only made it as far as East Berlin. Not sure if you are aware but the standard gauge line from Gernrode to Quedlingburg has since been converted to metre gauge and is now operated by the HSB. Many thanks for more excellent pictures. Please keep them coming!! Keith

Please keep them coming!! Keith Many thanks for the comments. I'd forgotten about the line to Quedlingburg being converted to metre gauge. I have about 250 - 300 photos around the Harz from 1992. I also had a look at part of the Harzquerbahn in 1991, it looked even tattier then. Some of the 1991 photos are in this thread, quite a bit earlier on. Even in 1992 I remember groups of children clustering around my car when I parked it in a village, they had seen very few British Cars and were fascinated by it being right hand drive. RMweb Premium Vecchio Posted March 5, 2017 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 5, 2017 Was in Austria the last time by car in 2012 - and you wouldn't believe it - in upper Austria (Salzkammergut), I got even a comment by an adult that the steering wheel is on the wrong side. Picture their embarrassment when she returned to the passenger seat and I drove off!
RMweb Gold DaveF Posted March 6, 2017 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted March 6, 2017 A look at Stiege today. At Stiege the line from Gernrode divides into two, one line goes to the terminus at Hasselfelde, the other goes to Eisfelder Talmuhle, connecting with the Harzquerbahn. Stiege is noteworthy in having a reversing loop which allows trains to travel from Gernrode to Eisfelder Talmuhle without reversing. The whole train is simply run round the loop and back through the station for a second time. RMweb Premium Vecchio Posted March 13, 2017 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 13, 2017 The German name for these cars is Rollwagen or Rollböcke. You find them at companies like Glöckner or Weinert (and they have the price of a small locomotive....)
RMweb Premium melmerby Posted March 13, 2017 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 13, 2017 Like the transporter wagons in C17727. Do they ever get modelled? Used by several railways. The Zillertalbahn has some for it's 760mm gauge And the MOB uses this different system: (parked at Zweisimmen 1000mm gauge) https://goo.gl/maps/D23wmgkQdUU2 Keith
eastwestdivide
Yes, I also saw some transporter wagons in real life at Innertkirchen, Switzerland, last year. Stacked up and looking like they'd been out of use for a while, I think they might only be used occasionally for traffic connected with the hydro power plants there (the original purpose of the MIB line from Meiringen I believe).
