RMweb Gold DaveF Posted April 6, 2017 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted April 6, 2017 Some photos of Brig today. As most of you know Brig is on the Simplon line, at the Swiss end of the Simplon Tunnel. The standard gauge station us used by both SBB and BLS, there are also metre gauge lines outside the main building. RMweb Gold DaveF Posted April 7, 2017 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted April 7, 2017 Andermatt is the only real junction on the FO network. The then BFD was beaten to Andermatt by the private Schöllenenbahn, who used a 1200V DC system to connect Andermatt and the village of Göschenen. Normally, a village of that size wouldn't attract that much interest, except that it's on the northern tunnel entrance of the Gotthard tunnel The SchB used 4 small HGe 2/2 loco's, all of which where converted to the 11kV AC system when the company was merged into the FO during electrification of the latter in the early 1940's. Its final act was to order one ABDeh 4/4, later FO 41, while the FO itself purchased 42-45. None of the old HG2 2/2 loco's survive, but Fleischmann modelled their N-scale Piccolo track-cleaner loco after this type. The route through the gorge has by far the steepest gradient on the MGB network and this limits train lengths as well as determines where the loco is placed: it's always on the Göschenen side of the train! Both Andermatt and Göschenen have workshops for the FO/MGB, with the latter quite literally build up the mountain Andermatt itself is actually quite a strategic and thus important town: it's on the junction of the east-west and north-south routes, the actual Gotthardpass starts from it. The east-west connection is between Rhein (Rhine) and Rotten (better known under its French name: Rhone), Chur in Graubunden (the Grisons) with Brig (Wallis) and Geneva. It's therefore also a garrison town, the Army barracks are just outside the station in the V of the junction as well as opposite the station itself. PS: David, I hope you don't mind me elaborating on your images with some background info? This is your thread after all I'm very pleased you do it. At the moment I am a bit short of time so cannot usually write more than the basic captions. I'd also have to look it all up (and translate most of it from German). RMweb Premium melmerby Posted April 7, 2017 RMweb Premium Share Posted April 7, 2017 (edited) I was in Andermatt last year. It hasn't changed much. My video will be elsewhere on RMweb. Not Andermatt but still part of the old FO: When I visited Switzerland some years ago the Furka Basis-Tunnel had not long opened and the old route over the pass had been abandoned. The DFB hadn't really got started so there were no trains on the old route at all and it looked somewhat forlorn. No pictures I'm afraid. RMweb Premium melmerby Posted April 7, 2017 RMweb Premium Share Posted April 7, 2017 "Some" years ago Keith? That was 1982, opening of the Furka Basis tunnel! 1990 I think, based on the fact that the festivities for the 100th anniversary of the BOB opening were taking place. So 8 years after the Base tunnel opened but 2 years before the first bit of the DFB? Keith

RMweb Premium Vecchio Posted April 11, 2017 RMweb Premium Share Posted April 11, 2017 Notice in the above photo that the DB car is narrower and lower then the SJ cars behind it, as well as the loco in front! (not by much, but it is visible) This tells us a lot about standardisation - the only thing which is almost standardised in (western) Europe is the track - if we exclude Spain.
