RMweb Gold Stubby47 Posted June 27, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 27, 2015 A brief visit to Par today, for some atmosphere and train photographing. As we arrived, the branch starter was off as the 1S49 Cross Country from Newquay to Dundee was due in. It duly arrived, consisting of a 4 car unit followed by a 5 car unit : As it went quiet, I took the opportunity for some general shots around the station. Some palm trees on Platform 1 : The footbridge and main building : The shed under the footbridge : Some awning detail from Platform 2/3 shelter :
RMweb Gold Stubby47 Posted June 27, 2015 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted June 27, 2015 A little later, as previously informed, 66193 whistled through with a rake of chocolate & cream coaches, on 191F Tame Bridge Parkway to Penance Next was 1A83 Penzance to Paddington FGW HST 43172/43129 Again, I found time to wander around, pointing the camera at odd bits & pieces. The signal box and stunted signals at the Newquay / Penzance end of Platform 2/3 : The staff-only foot crossing - this looked to be plywood with a grit finish - probably modellable using fine grade sandpaper. Behind the signal box was a small, cast-concrete bin, looking very much akin to a certain object on the ANTB thread.
RMweb Gold Stubby47 Posted June 27, 2015 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted June 27, 2015 Looking more or less south, a train awaiting it's turn on the roster sits in the siding. Before that, the station Xmas tree can bee seen growing. Turning back to the signal box, what can't quite be seen is the name board - it reads 'PR' - yep, they've shorted the name by all of 1 letter... I'm also not certain the bird feeders are standard issue... Slightly more concerning is the note scrawled on the wing rail of a point - it reads "U/S Not Tested". I'm sure there is a suitable explanation for this being in service... Next to arrive was 57303 on 5P70, pulling three coaches, one of which was in the new green livery
RMweb Gold Captain Kernow Posted June 27, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 27, 2015 I suspect the u/s refers to ultrasonic testing.
RMweb Gold Captain Kernow Posted June 27, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 27, 2015 Saw the Penzance charter at Bristol this morning on our way to Loughborough. The stock is that normally used for the Torbay Express.

brianusa
Makes me envious to read all that. Used to do the very same thing once on trips down to Cornwall. Parents would visit the rels and I would visit the trains, first in SBZ and then over to Par Station taking in the docks at the same time. The shed was good for filling in the ABC with unseen Panniers and the odd 2-8-0T while Par presented the locals and main line traffic. At that time the cut down locos ruled the docks (did they ever venture outside?)and so much was going on, it was difficult to believe this was just a country station albeit with a yard and engine shed nearby. Wish I knew more at the time and had a camera! Brian.
caradoc
Par looks like a lovely place to watch trains, thanks Stubby47.
lmsforever
Agree I spent a couple of hours there a few years back and enjoyed watching trains go by friendly staff as well.
F-UnitMad
Class 66 with Chocolate & Cream coaches???!!!??? the mind boggles... ...not only that, but run such a model train at an Exhibition and the Know-alls would be all OVER you...
RMweb Gold The Stationmaster Posted June 28, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 28, 2015 Nice pics Stu but I still find it very difficult to adjust to Par station with its heavily blitzed (of buildings) island platform. Every time I pass through it always looks horribly stark to me.
RMweb Premium uax6 Posted June 28, 2015 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 28, 2015 The foot crossing is boarded with anti-slip boards. They appear to be some sort of fibre-glass board with a really rough surface on them (to stop you slipping!), they have two down sides, firstly they rip the sloes of your boots to shreds in about 6 months, and in winter, after a good frost, they become slippery........ RMweb Gold Stubby47 Posted June 29, 2015 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted June 29, 2015 I suspect the u/s refers to ultrasonic testing. So should probably read "Not U/S Tested", which even to the layman sounds safer - Not Useless, Tested.

Every time I pass through it always looks horribly stark to me. I grew up in Rhyl, where the platforms could easily hold 18 or more coaches. Most of the platforms were open, so for that reason Par looks 'ok' to me. However, seeing the 9,10,11,12 car stop boards way beyond the end of the platform looks very strange...
