You need to loose the European peaked roof and go flat - see examples here

punjab rural house

I was using this sort of image as a basis, but replacing the thatch with corrugated iron

However, I see your point, Simon, and if I made a flat roof, I'd have to make a staircase and put items on the roof - all of which will take longer than I have time to allocate to the house build.  But, I can make the house removable and replace it with a more locally correct one at a later stage.

That's planned, complete with a stack of logs for the fire / oven.

Thatch....... strips of brown felt ?    clumps of brown wool ?     tied bushels of embroidery cotton ?

Any other ideas ???

Planter felt (like wot I've got and I'll take a pic if you like). However it might involve a visit to a Garden Centre and that could be traumatic.

Aunties, got to have aunties.

For those not in the know every adult is either aunty or uncle (a term of polite address for elders)

Edit to add: they could be winnowing, we saw a lot of that in India, oh and children playing ludo, yes really.

Phil,

Have got some planter stuff, from a previous visit to a local fauna emporium, which also included a large slice of gluten-full choccy cake, but I think it's too swirly,

so,

I'm going to experiment with strips of J-cloth...

I've also found my pad of watercolour paper, for use on the walls.

I've never been to India but I did go to Wolverhampton once.

Oh, and some track, too, at some point. But no points

I hear Peco may be releasing something soon that'd be perfect for you.

Smashing and suitably bonkers project.  I shall alert Mad Carew to this excellent thread.

Meanwhile, the house has its wall covering of watercolour paper. This hides the joins in the wall joints and provides a suitably rough finish to represent the 'plaster'.

Placed roughly in position, the green cutting mat is only there to give some contrast.

According to Wiki: The most famous Maharaja of Patiala was Maharaja Bhupinder Singh (12 October 1891 – 23 March 1938). He is perhaps best known for his extravagance, and for being a cricketer. His polo and cricket teams were among the best in India.

I guess that some Sikhs would be the thing for the Punjab, though this would be a relatively expensive option assuming that only the heads were really suitable (though maybe you could convert them to cricketers !):

Apart from the loco driver, I am intending to use the Michael Bentine's Potty Time style of populating the layout.

So a bicycle propped up here, or fishing tackle left there, hinting that the little person has just stepped out of view.

Stu, that grass under the house needs ironing and a bit of flock off the edges.
