RMweb Premium Phil Mc Posted July 24, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted July 24, 2022 Had a great day out at DEMU yesterday..... As ever, nice to see some quality layouts, and meet up with some old longtime friends ! Got enough bits off Brian to keep me entertained for a while.... I can finish off some projects now ! 😃 Cheers, Phil.
RMweb Premium Popular Post Phil Mc Posted September 1, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted September 1, 2022 (edited) Seems like an age since I spent any time at the workbench..... But 1 loco has recently had a visit, that being LNER livery 91118 'The Fusiliers'. Didn't take any pics before I started, but I guess most people know what it looks like !! A combination of factors ( @Jack Mc wanting that livery but not necessarily that loco, everyone will have that one, the Hornby metal nameplates being absolute tosh !!) led us to decide an identity change was in order.... Turns out, Brian does the plates for one of the options Jack wanted, so a set was ordered. Steve at Railtec produced a bespoke set of numbers, which arrived less than 2 days after ordering ( how does he do that !! ) First job, remove the printed nameplates and numbers from the model, which threw up an issue, the White 'swoosh' seems to be printed around the plate but not under it.... Or I'm just ham-fisted at removing it ! No bother though, as the swoosh looked a bit Pink to me, so I thought I'd better paint over it anyway.... Masking up. Gloss White sprayed on, hopefully keeping the fade at each end of the swoosh. Cruel close-ups after masking removed. New numbers applied and Satin varnished, plus nameplates applied. The pantograph well, was treated to some Grey wash. Cab roof area's also had some applied, to hopefully replicate the streaking seen on the prototype. I removed the bogie sideframes and painted the rear section of the Blue shock absorbers Black, to attempt to disguise the fact they aren't round as per the prototype. Then airbrush weathered them while they were off. Studying pics suggests that the cleaning plant that's used on the real thing, has brushes that reach up just above the Orange cantrail stripe, and as far down as the first row of slots on the sides of the chassis. The pantograph well just appears to be a dirty, patchy mess ! So that's what I've attempted to copy.... One weird little quirk of looking at prototype pics, I've never noticed before that the airpipes on the loco's have the valve handle to the 'outside' of the pipe, whereas the DVT's have the handle to the 'inside' of the pipe. I better remember that when I detail the rake of stock !! Cheers, Phil. Edited September 1, 2022 by Phil Mc 18 6
RMweb Premium Phil Mc Posted December 23, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted December 23, 2022 Found this in a box under my bench.... Wondered if it could be used as part of a test train to go with 9703.... I'm not too bothered about modelling an exact formation ( I can feel @newbryford rolling his eyes at me !!! 🙄 ), but I would model each coach as close as possible to prototype. This may turn into 9523, just needs a door on each side filling in. Cheers, Phil.

For a bit more door blanking, go for 9516. 3

I had seen that one, and noted the filled/resized windows ! I've also already got another BSO, a RMB and 2x TSO, all late mk2's, that may be used in this rake..... Anything else I'll have to go shopping for. 😅 When I decide what to put in it ! Any ideas ? Cheers, Phil.

Cheers, Phil. Look at 977868 for a TSO. 1256 for RMB - although two version of this - RSC3 and PLPR. PLPR involves fitting a window into 1256, not blanking it! The "early" RSC3 set was 9481/1256/5981/977997
RMweb Premium Phil Mc Posted December 24, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted December 24, 2022 They don't all have to go in this rake, whatever's left might go in a Blue/Grey railtour set. Or I might even do a generic 'test' rake now, with the intention of adding extra stock later, to split it into 2 separate rakes, 1 TnT, 1 with the RTOV. Cheers, Phil. RMweb Premium Phil Mc Posted December 27, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted December 27, 2022 (edited) Bit of progress..... Had a dunk in paint stripper- Before and after pics of the footstep shortening under the missing doors- Box also removed from the chassis. Also showing the gap left by cutting the stepped section off the chassis, behind the missing door. Which leaves room to glue a piece of plasticard in, which forms the base of the for filling in the tumblehome. Windows also had blanks glued in. First round of filling and sanding- I found that gentle fettling of the recess's in the body for the other footsteps, allows the chassis to hopefully sit far enough up into the body, that the bottom of the chassis is level with the bottom of the body, instead of showing below it. Spray of primer next, before fill/sand/prime, repeat until happy !! 😅 Cheers, Phil. Edited December 27, 2022 by Phil Mc
sb67
Hi Phil, what paint stripper have you used? I'm having trouble getting rid of paint from an old Lima class 31, tried lots of stuff!

RMweb Premium Phil Mc Posted December 30, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted December 30, 2022 Couple more rounds of fill/sand/prime, and I've got to this.... Going with 'Sunshine' Yellow, although prototype pics suggest that any shade will do ! 😅 Cheers, Phil.

If stripping older Airfix coaches - DOT4 brake fluid is ideal (and relatively cheap). Don't use DOT4 on Bachmann plastics. IPA -usually available as 99% - thinned down to 92-93% is also good. For older Lima stuff - I find a blowtorch often works to get the paint off........................... 1

When I (badly) repainted a Lima 33 in my youth, I think I stripped my and the original paint afterwards using Turps. It was pretty successful but didn't touch the printed logos, so I suspect they would only come off with some fine wet-n-dry (used wet).
sb67
Detol actually took the paint of one Lima loco but the resulting gunky mess took an age to clean up! @newbryford after 2 weeks of the loco sitting in Mr Muscle oven cleaner I'm working up to the blowtorch! 😉 Edited December 31, 2022 by sb67 1
