During a holiday in Germany we visited Koln (yes, I did climb the cathedral steps) - whilst my partner and the kids were looking in some shops I spent an hour or two on the bridge next to Koln station and here's what I photographed, starting with the journey from Dormagen to Koln and finishing with the return.

I'll post around 30-40 each time, there are several hundred - apologies for any repeats, I'll try and remove them but there's a lot to sort through and it's easier for a lazy old git to post them here

It's extremely busy there isn't it. Any shots from the top of the cathedral, please?

Many years ago, I seem to remember being on a precarious ledge with a view directly across the big bridge. Being an impoverished student, I only took a couple of not-very-good shots. Would be nice to know if it's still possible.

Edit: here's the shots I took, in another thread: http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/3444-just-some-german-everyday-stuff/?p=28769

Great stuff Beast.

It's been far too long since I was in Koln. Must find some way to make another visit.

One of my more recent memories is of the restaurant at the Hohenzollernbrucke end of the station which has floor to ceiling windows and gives you an excellent view as you eat your meal - great place but probably expensive (someone else paid the day I was there!)

Another good place to see various locomotives  in Koln ,is the freight only line ,close by, follow the Rhine past the River Cruisers and also you can get  onto the bridge by the stairs onto pedestrian passage right next to the line, when there last 4 years ago I saw about 40  varied freight trains in about 90 minutes

I do not remember it being that far, there is certainly other bridges further on, this  is  at three span bridge  { if that is the correct terminology] is a pleasant stroll along the promenade type of walk way, popular with roller skaters when I was there last, scenic walk with lots of river boats plus barges pulling containers , others with coal loads, running parallel with the main road away from the station [separated by some large offices] , the line comes out of a cutting with ornate brickwork if my memory is correct and then after the bridge disappears into a similar scene , I did not see any passenger trains on any of my visits to Koln over the years I have been there, however Koln station is not that far from  the bridge , just out of the station is a pleasant  green with many bars , was very popular with the locals when last there in the summer of 2012, in fact  seemed like a beach scene without the sand.

I should think all those padlocks are there until the fence is re-newed!

That's the "Love Bridge" where folks attack a padlock to the fence to show their love for someone or something. I say something as there were very obviously plenty of ones for pets as well as goodness knows what else, last time I was there!

I'm wondering what the concrete pump was doing in the background, something on the 'Dom' perhaps?

Cheers,

John.
