RMweb Premium jamie92208 Posted January 16, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 16, 2016 I'm following this thread with great interest from oop north and am very grateful for all the photos. Just to help me understand what's going on can you please tell me exactly what the damage is. Is it a piece of the cliff that's pushing the railway out towards the sea or is there some sort of fault at right angles to the cliff that's opened up somewhere near where the footbridge was. Thanks Jamie

Thanks Jamie Nothing as dramatic as a piece of cliff moving, or a fault opening up. It's simply the partial failure of the retaining wall supporting the line on the seaward side; the failing wall is now being protected by a combination of Larsen piles and rock armour. It remains to be seen whether the existing wall will be replaced by a new wall inland of it, or simply repaired. Part of the problem is that it's uncertain what the 'made ground' between the sea-wall and the cliff consists of.

RMweb Premium Simon Lee Posted January 19, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 19, 2016 There was a lot of shingle masquerading as ballast in the Town yard, and at the stops end the loco shed floor was still in place. Where they are digging was a mix of ballast and shingle plus plentiful quantities of Sea Cabbage plants, that sometimes concealed adders, that used to come out and sun bathe in the warmer months.
