Updating all 3 threads in one day!! I must get a hobby to stop me playing with all these trains!!!!

In preparation for the work I am doing over on Hailsham I have spent today playing with my Terrier (also Hailsham!)

Something that has been intentionally missed from this thread is the fact that this terrier has never actually had a DCC chip fitted!!! That has been corrected today!

post-22762-0-30448200-1522266538_thumb.jpg

I beat Rails to a DCC ready Terrier!! Do I get a prize??

Once that was done, it was time for the next job that was outstanding:

post-22762-0-09599800-1522266542_thumb.jpg

I have been putting this off as it seemed rather daunting, needing a fair amount of work to the chassis, I documented it, not only to show what was needed, but also so I can refer back to it for the rest of the fleet!!

I started by taking the saw to the front of the chassis, taking of the incorrect sandboxes and marking the area that needed removing so that the coupling could fit:

post-22762-0-36485800-1522266544_thumb.jpg

This was then removed:

post-22762-0-04315900-1522266546_thumb.jpg

I then made new sides to the chassis from some 10 thou off cuts, I seem to have a lot of those for some reason!

post-22762-0-42174900-1522266548_thumb.jpg

The buffer beam then got some treatment, removing the original coupling an extending the hole so that the new one would fit:

post-22762-0-83951200-1522266550_thumb.jpg

The front coupling was then made up and attached:

post-22762-0-64127100-1522266553_thumb.jpg

I then moved to the back of the chassis, The pickup plate saw a lot of work so that I could turn it backwards to clear the area for the coupling, and the end of the chassis had a hole cut for it to pass through:

post-22762-0-63459500-1522266555_thumb.jpg

and the rear buffer beam then got the same treatment as the front, then the coupling fitted:

post-22762-0-48531600-1522266558_thumb.jpg

A shot of the bottom showing the back of the couplings, so you can see all my chassis work was not in vain!

post-22762-0-33528200-1522266562_thumb.jpg

The chassis then got some paint over the sections I had cut to neaten it up, it should be red, and I will paint it at some point in the future, but for now it can stay as it is:

post-22762-0-15162400-1522266564_thumb.jpg

Which finally makes Hailsham ready to use!! Time to fit the Bachmann Stroudley's with some scale couplings on the ends!!

post-22762-0-67035800-1522267311_thumb.jpg

Thanks for looking, hope you enjoyed!

Certainly worth the effort Gary

Hi Andy,

Yes a little! The only room left that I could add lead to is in the boiler, which is now half full of DCC chip! The loco already has a metal crew which weigh more than the weight I have had to remove to get the chip in, but of coarse these are at the back so it would be good to get some extra weight up front.

I have got some pictures with the flash to show just how small an amount of room I have to work with

post-22762-0-76488800-1522308884_thumb.jpg

I will have a go ad cutting down some of the lead I have to fit in the space.

Hi Bob,

Thanks, your words are much appreciated!!

I was very nervous about making the video, hence the need foe the script you can hear me turning the pages of (6 pages!) It also took 5 attempts to film!! Hopefully with a few more I shall start to feel less nervous about it and will be able to work without a script and not mess up quite as much!

I felt you explained it very well.

Of course, we want to see it finished now!!!!

Gary, you know that you said anything looks good in IEG?

Well, I think I've pushed it...

I decided to draw up a terrier (on which I intended to test various fictional liveries) and got a tad carried away...

Love it!!! I want to build them both!!

Goes well with some of my fictional terrier ideas!!! open cab and an 0-8-0!!

Also if you want a terrier to draw on I can provide a high res version of my avatar!!!

I didn't intend for anyone to build them?!!! :scared:

I now need to do the open-cab 0-8-0T...

I wish you'd mentioned your avatar before I wasted a load of time Yesterday, whilst offline, drawing one up from a drawing of 'Bodiam'...

Hornby may well release the 0-8-0 Terrier on 1/4/19.... ;)

No better day for it!!

Well, they need to do something with that tooling!

They could give it to me!! I won't worry about the inaccuracies!!!

Well we have had a 4 day weekend full of mojo!!! and half(ish) of the update can be posted here!!

After getting out the DCC chip supply to fit Hailsham, yes I really did have some just lying around!! I decided to chip another few locos. Most of which I have videoed so some running shots may appear on YouTube at some point!

First there was the B1 that formally belonged to Alex (ex-Midland_Mole), with the best chip hiding I have ever done!

post-22762-0-68549700-1522778823_thumb.jpg

On a more serious note the decoder did actually get hidden once I knew it worked!

post-22762-0-27360200-1522778829_thumb.jpg

I may add some extra pickups to this loco as it only picks up of the drivers currently, it does however run extremely well!!

The new Hatton's P class also got a chip

post-22762-0-41958500-1522778827_thumb.jpg

And one for the E2. The motor needs a service and new magnet but that can wait!! it runs well enough for now!

post-22762-0-72443000-1522778825_thumb.jpg

I also spent some time working on things for all these locos to pull! So some goods stock also got fitted with scale couplings, and my Isfield Brewing Company wagon lost it's SR markings!! To be replaced by LB&SCR ones at some point (Don't ask why they have an SE&CR wagon though!):

post-22762-0-49126300-1522779173_thumb.jpg

post-22762-0-35870600-1522779175_thumb.jpg

post-22762-0-86314300-1522779365_thumb.jpg

and the main thing for Hailsham to pull had to be the Stroudley carriages, which not only meant fitting the screw links onto the end, but also making sure the close coupling system worked properly and could take the corners required of it on both Oak Hill and Hailsham.

So the saga begins:

Stroudley's close couplings as fitted to the carriages originally doesn't to mu eye represent anything that is commercially available:

post-22762-0-84409100-1522779393_thumb.jpg

This meant devising and making something from scratch, step one was removal of the couplings and buffers of the models, followed by drilling a hole in the buffer beam:

post-22762-0-97405000-1522779363_thumb.jpg

post-22762-0-30323000-1522779355_thumb.jpg

This hole matched some plastic rod I have that is almost perfect scale thickness:

post-22762-0-19415200-1522779353_thumb.jpg

This was then cut down to 34mm lengths, The size was decided after much experimentation with the bits I had, I also marked the "middle" of the coupling, this is actually 2mm off centre owing to the fact that the buffer beams are slightly thicker on one side of the carriage, markings were also made 3mm from each end of the tube:

post-22762-0-11233400-1522779357_thumb.jpg

A small section for the middle (5mm) to keep the carriages apart was then cut:

post-22762-0-69527000-1522779358_thumb.jpg

This was stuck on and holes drilled at the outer markings:

post-22762-0-64331600-1522779360_thumb.jpg

Once this was dry, the coupling was inserted through the holes in the buffer beam, springs and split pins were then added:

post-22762-0-33209200-1522779362_thumb.jpg

Which gives us a working coupling, in the style of the original, and almost to scale. It can also manage the corners on both layouts just fine! Once I have actually stuck some paint on them I think they will blend in quite nicely, and in the meantime they give a look to the carriages as is:

post-22762-0-04543100-1522780119_thumb.jpg

I had best go off and do an update on Hailsham now!!

Thanks for looking, hope you enjoyed,

Gary
