If there is a rerun, the Bachmann model - as is - is only good for 9702/9703.

9701/08/14 are all generator fitted and are very visibly different. (Bachmann seem to have thankfully given up printing to represent plated windows/grilles etc.)

9701 was the general use generator, often used with 975091 and other vehicles that required power, 9708 was dedicated to the SGT set with 460000, complete with end cameras etc, whilst 9714 eventually became the second SGT set driving car  - with additional end detail.

Details have varied over time - a specific time date photo will be required to confirm the exact info.

Only 9708 was black at the inner end and didn't have a corridor connection (see lower pic) whilst semi-permanently bar-coupled to the optical car 460000, as well has having various mods to the roofline.  Believed to be deflectors to keep rainwater away from the rotating laser "dustbin" fitted to 460000's last year or so in service. [*] This is 9708 at the RTC being altered back to "normal" after being coupled to 460000 for a few years.

AFAIIA, 9708 with black end, only ran with 460000/975081/975280/99666.

Great information for a conversion from 9702/3 to 9708 - thanks.

Planning to take the plunge:

a) Cut and carve to add grill

b) Narrow the front window and add wiper

a) and b) PH designs parts ordered. Need to source a wiper.

c) Paint one end black, modify the corridor connection, add water deflectors to roof, make a semi-fixed connection to DS460000 via magnetic coupling

d) Would like to add the fuel tank but not sure how to source the info or parts

e) Hopefully someone out there will produce 3D printed parts for the extra light mounts and junction boxes

f) Source LEDs for the extra light and perhaps get those working on a DCC function

I bet just as I get part way through Bachmann will bring out the 9708!

There is some usefil info part way down this excellent document:

Here's some pics of the fuel tank. Should be simple enough to knock up a rough box shape in plasticard. This is the side with cab to the right.

Here is what I did to convert 9702/3 to 9701/14. Page 3 is converting the latest Bachmann versions by adding the generator grill, smaller front window and brackets. Generator tank and exhaust too done too.

I have also done 9708 but haven’t printed the brackets separately yet - easy enough to do, just that I converted a BSO so used a whole “cab”.

Here’s a “cab” version kit with a fuel tank etc for a Bachmann one:

Been going through your work on these conversions. Impressive!

It seems you have made all of the parts I would need for the 9702 to 9708 conversion. I expect there many modellers wanting to get the right DBSO for a Network Rail test train formation. Will these become available?

Interesting to see additional equipment attached under a Mk2. I thought the issue why Mk2s couldn't be dual braked is that there wasn't any structural position to place additional braking equipment. So I wonder how they can safely attach a loaded fuel tank without compromising the strength of a Mk2f?

They are heavily modified inside too for the additional equipment, I don’t know whether the DBSO had air conditioning originally but that has all been removed on the NR ones so there may have been room where that equipment used to be

that would make sense. Yes the DBSOs had a/c, and of course in Intercity service were just another half-TSO in terms of passenger accommodation. I think (not sure, but possibly read in Harris Mk2 Coach book) that the a/c was extended into guard (and driver?) compartments during the mid-life refurb prior to use on the Anglia route.

Afternoon All,

As the Network Rail project engineer for the DBSO conversion for the IM fleet use I can confirm there was a significant amount of structural design work (including calculations) required for both the fuel tank and gen set installations.

Obviously most of this was hidden within the floor and underframe and I no longer have access to the drawings.

The fact that they were fitted in the former van area helped.

Wonder if anyone has considered modelling the interior details as well, such as the gen set, mini kitchen and shower cubicle?

Best regards,

Nigel.

i did model it on a previous DBSO I modified, hopefully @LMSfan72 might do it a 3D print of it to replace the Bachmann unit, I know he has done an interior for mentor based on my photos and previous plasticard effort so I recon  it wouldn’t be a problems for him, unfortunately I’ve not got any interior pics of the DBSOs

Network Rail DBSO 39-737ADC (9703) arrived today in perfect condition.

DSC07899.JPG.3453c39f88e7d0c8e56bc1e5a05afd8e.JPG

At discounted price of £135 from Bluebell Railway. Still showing in stock, but do not know the level.

Will start the conversion to 9708 when I can summon up the courage!
