TPE new trains

Recommended Posts

I remember when there was one train an hour between Leeds and Manchester via Huddersfield.

How many is it now?

It's now down to an ill-spaced three an hour down from four (and taking 1 hour instead of 50 min), plus what goes via Salford East (the misnamed Man Vic).

Now all I have to do is wait until the HS2 station obliterates our office next to Man PIc.

Today there were 2 of the 68's ticking over in platform 2 (Scarborough bay) in York blocked in by some units. Also on Leeman road were another pair also ticking over. All four in TPE livery.

There are further visits of a class 68 and a Nova 3 set to Scarborough in the schedule for Monday and Tuesday evening.

Interestingly and I assume to ensure rolling stock and infrastructure compatibility, rather than using the Standedge line, the return routing to Manchester is via the Calder Valley.  This is TPE’s usual diversionary route in the event of an engineering blockade or severe service disruption on the Standedge  line.

A few photos of todays 3Q61, 15.45 Manchester International Depot to Scarborough, test run when it briefly paused at Huddersfield station earlier this evening.

Totally agree russ but it’s not ‘boil in the bag’ that winds me up it’s lazy drivers, I had it at chiltern, we were trained to couple and uncouple 67s from MK3s (by Marcus37 as it happens) and I had to do it once to get a loco for fuel in Tyseley, leaving the stock in moor st

next day the aslef rep phoned me to say I shouldn’t have done it ‘as i’d Set a president, so everyone would be expected to do it’ after a number of drivers heard what I’d done and complained!

when I pointed out we were fully trained to do it and certified on paper he didn’t know what to say other than ‘well I’m not going to do it if they ask me’

An interesting tale - and one which perhaps shows the different mentality of different types of drivers based on where they have worked.

Those that have experience of freight work are probably very used to needing to mess round with coupling vehicles, while those only used to multiple unit / passenger work (where coupling is done from within the cabs via auto-couplers) are probably far less inclined to split off a loco.

Your experience also Illustrates the continual battle with trade unions where what you might say ‘common sense / reasonable requests’ are automatically seen as things to oppose on point of principle.

Class 68s and Nova 3 sets are starting to run along the Calder Valley line, which is the diversionary route for TransPennine Express services across the Pennines, in addition to the usual planned route via Huddersfield.

In the morning mist on 26th February 2019, 68024 Centaur heads towards Brighouse with 3Q62, 07.55 Scarborough to Longsight.

The booked route for 3Q62 involved a reversal at Greetland Junction, taking the working back through Brighouse, and then on to Huddersfield via Bradley Wood Junction and Bradley Junction.  The effect of this was to reverse the orientation of the set and I wonder if the purpose was to correctly present the direction of the driving trailer ready for a trip to the wheel lathe at Longsight, as the flat is evident from the audio track on the video.

Agreed. There are photos on a FB group of it "part finished" at Scarborough as the perps were apparently disturbed and ran off.

Hopefully the sets will get more effective overnight security once the new carriage sidings and stabling point outside the station is completed.

It might well be 'mindless' - but its not unusual for new trains to get targeted.

In fact there is significant competition between Graffiti vandals to be the first to tag / deface a 'new' train as it massively enhances the reputation of the individuals within the Graffiti community - particularly if it is a challenge due to the provision of security or secure stabling.

As such I doubt this is the last we will hear of attempts to 'decorate' the new TPE stock....

A bit extreme I know, but if they catch these mindless morons, cut their bloody hands off and teach them a lesson that others might learn before they do the same stupid thing!

A bit extreme (cruel and unusual punishment?) but worse things have happened:
