Marcus 37
Don't forget you've got to come down for a play with PDW and a curry as well mate. Look forward to seeing you back soon. Cheers Marcus
delticman
I was worried about you, going cold turkey with suffering withdrawal symptoms from your inspirational updates. I can only echo the previous sentiment that you have been missed. Geoff.
RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted April 5, 2017 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted April 5, 2017 (edited) Well, I've finally had some time to myself to do some modelling. Not quite how I envisioned it, but still. I'm currently off work with the flu, and got so bored that I've made a few tentative steps to continue with Grindleford. So here's what I've done over the past few days. Back in January, we left the station café with a lot of blank holes in the walls, and I'd made a start on the roof slates. The windows and doors are now in, although both windows and doors have warped slightly due to the amount of time they've waited, but I've straightened them out as best I could. I've also managed to break off one of the chimneys, Next, I completed the roof slates on all the roof sections over the course of the last week, and these are now ready to be joined together and fixed: I've done a bit more since these photos, and the ridge tiles and barge boards are done now. The other thing I've done while I've been off is separate the two current baseboards - the tunnel board and station board - in preparation for adding the third board, the goods yard sidings. First, I cleared off all the buildings trees etc from the second board: Then, I carefully cut away the scenery between the boards: and pulled them apart: For now, I've removed the second board, and here it is stored out of the way-ish... This has let me turn round the first board, as to complete the café build I need to sort out the landscaping. More about that in a minute, Thanks for reading, Al. RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted April 5, 2017 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted April 5, 2017 So, here's the first board, and the location of the café building. I've removed the Hanging Basket Liner that was here, and now need to flatten down the area for the café. As you can see there's currently a big lump of landscape in the way: So out with the bread knife, and a bit of surgery: The café in position: And here's why it was going to be built as half-relief originally: I need to build an extension piece of baseboard to support this, and tie in with the scenery and the end of the display area. Thanks for looking, Al.
Andrew P
Looking very good mate, that Cafe will look superb. Good to see you back, I too have a stinking Cold, so no Mojo. Edited April 5, 2017 by Andrew P
RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted April 5, 2017 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted April 5, 2017 Hi Andy, Sorry to hear about your cold mate, hope you get better soon. Great to finally be posting again, and I think I've got a week's worth of solid RMWeb browsing to catch up on everybody's threads. No doubt you've started another three layouts since January? :D Cheers mate, Al.
RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted April 5, 2017 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted April 5, 2017 (edited) So just to bring you right up to date, this evening I added the ridge tiles to the roofs, and barge boards to the ends, glued the various sections together, and made everything ready to paint. For ridge tiles, I used a method I've seen from many modellers, but which I last saw done by freebs. I took two lengths of 20thou x 100thou strip, and a length of 80thou round rod: I stuck one length of the strip, and the round rod, together: then added the other strip at a jaunty angle: then I went along and scored the individual tile-lengths. I was a bit heavy handed on the first bit: but scored less deeply for the rest: When all the sections had set, I took them off for painting: I took Humbrol 96, and Humbrol 25, and made up a dilute wash: And here's the main sections after a first wash: This is now drying, then another coat will be added. Thanks for looking, Al. Edited April 5, 2017 by acg_mr
Marcus 37
Hi Al Great to see you back mate. The station cafes looking absolutely awesome. Sorry to hear about the flu although it looks as if it's not slowing you down too much. Especially with lumping half the layout around!! Good to see things on the move again. All the best mate. Cheers Marcus. P.S Andy's not lying about his cold. Sounded like he was smoking about a 1000 fags a day when I spoke to him on the phone the other night. Seems to be a lot of it going around at the moment.
RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted April 6, 2017 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted April 6, 2017 Hi Marcus, great to hear from you. I'm having to do little bits at a time, 'cos I feel like sh1t at the moment, moving the baseboard just about killed me. What you see above has taken nearly five days in fits and starts. Love the photos on your thread, it looks like you had great fun shuttling to and from the SVR. All the best, Al.
RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted April 6, 2017 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted April 6, 2017 So here's what the roofs look like with two layers of wash on them: I'm happy with that, so I added the lead flashing in the roof joints. There will be more around the chimneys later. And then, I couldn't resist, so I added the cladding to the building: I reckon that's looking close to the prototype now: More detailing to do. Thanks for looking, Al.
Marcus 37
I don't about close. You won't be able to tell the difference soon. Top work indeed.
freebs
Al, just one minor, minor point.... but wouldn't the flashing be under the tiles at the joints?...

RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted April 7, 2017 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted April 7, 2017 Today, I've been creating the paved area which surrounds the Café. The method is simple, take one sheet of 60thou styrene, and one sheet of Slater's 4mm York paving, and cut to shape. Paint with Humbrol 63 Sand, and then when dry, wash over with Humbrol 91 Black Green. Result: And with the Café in position: I need to add the walls which surround the paved area now. RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted April 7, 2017 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted April 7, 2017 In other news, I have bought one of these: This is nothing to do with Grindleford, and is for another project I've had buzzing round in my head for some time... I wonder if you can guess what? All will be revealed shortly Al

RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted April 7, 2017 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted April 7, 2017 Wirksworth? Very nice little Loco matey. Very close mate, Just realised having seen your post the file names of the photos rather give it away! Yep, it's a very nice little loco, which I couldn't resist buying when I saw it. I've started a new thread here: http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/121657-cromford-wharf-shunting-layout/ See what you think. Cheers, Al.
RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted April 8, 2017 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted April 8, 2017 Today, I've done a couple of quick bits to the Café. I've added the low wall that surrounds the picnic area at the side: I took the café down to the layout and took some photos, to get an idea of how much landscaping I need to do to bed it all in: The other thing I did today was finish off the chimneys: Next is some guttering, and other bits and pieces. Thanks for looking, Al.
eastwestdivide
Possibly slightly late, but we dropped in to the real Grindleford station cafe over the glorious weekend we just had, and I discovered there's a scale drawing of the building up on the wall: And not all of the handwritten notices have disappeared:

Waverley West
Telepathy having failed miserably as a means of placing my order, I'd like the fried bread soup (bottom right on the menu), please Al. Sounds interesting. Nice work, Al. Do you think the roof might benefit from a thin dirty wash to tone down the variation a little? I know the prototype roof is mottled, but your version looks a fraction exaggerated to me (pale grey/dark grey, rather than a little more nuanced). I do like my dirty washes. Great to see you back. Pesky work, always getting in the way, hey? Cheers Dave
