Not often used now, but shingle was used extensively at one time. Its rounded shape didn't really hold things in place that well. A fairly recent example was found on the Isle of Wight.

Digging out the ballast on the up line at Whalley in 2008

And three years later, renewing the down line outside my house.

They just dumped a pile of spent ballast and parked this up for the day

You can see the temporary joint where they finished the previous night and where they would start the next night.

These are my photos - I went through a phase of dressing up a lot of my photos with company colours and logos - always appropriately, but possibly in infringement of their trademarks.

Because thats towards the major location on the line (Blackburn, Preston, McR) or because it's that way to London? (Is there a rule?)

Going O/T

Up is usually towards London.

Some stations have London bound in both directions - Exeter St Davids and Chester General are two that spring to mind.

When a line is not towards London, then up/down is usually towards the larger/more important location - hence up is towards Lancashire on the L&Y route over the Pennines........... (I think it's up to Manchester, as the L&Y HQ was at Hunts Bank next to Victoria.)

Cheers,

Mick

As far as the Midland Railway was concerned, Derby was the epicentre and the UP line was in the direction of Derby.

Except in the direction of London when that was UP.

So here I am at York in about 1966, and it is raining.

9 years later, I am approaching Warrington. Is it still raining, or is it raining again?
