TSD's Workbench - SECR and Industrial modelling

Recommended Posts

Slow progress is at least some progress. I'm trying to work up the courage to paint the black parts of the F Class, so in the meantime, the Neilson has had a couple of coats of Ford Balliol Blue, which has worked nicely enough to make me wonder if there's a car colour relatively close to SECR green - it would certainly be a step up from my brush painting.

Hi TS,

I've thought before now that Halfords would make a fortune from "railway colours" !!!

Perhaps I should write to them.

Gibbo.

Hmmm

"Brunswick Racing Green"

"Improved Escort Green"

Well, Halfords British Racing Green is pretty much spot on for Mid Brunswick Green, which in turn is pretty much the same as the Mid Quaker Green of the M&CR as far as I'm concerned.

Sorry for spamming your notifications with likes, it seems to have been a while since I last checked the thread! (I really thought I was following it, apparently not) ;)

Really impressive 3D work on all the locos, but I am most interested by the 2-2-2T. Loving seeing that little beauty coming together. :)

Detail painting has started on the Neilson. I'm aiming for this to be a psuedo-Wainwright style livery, but instead of green and red, I have blue and... I'm not sure what the underframe colour should be. I'm thinking maybe a mid-grey? Probably Humbrol 67 as that's what I have lying around. I don't want a light colour as that wouldn't have been practical to keep clean. Any bright ideas?

Brown and orange? I'm going for c.1910, not the 70s!  :jester:

I'm hoping to get away with minimal lining as well, so I'm going for more brass details like boiler bands, dome, etc., and just lining the tank sides and cab back.

Brown lake also known as Indian Red. Not the umber/sienna shades of 1970s fabric, thank heaven.

Lining frames is the one class of lining that might be easy. "Just" draw one thick-ish orange line at a constant distance from each edge of the frames, including any cut-outs. A pen with a built-in fence can maintain the nib at a fixed distance from an edge. The Bob Moore pens come with this fence and I reckon I could probably make one to fit a Rotring-style pen.

Yeah, totally inappropriate for your period!

The F1 is pretty much finished now, just need to sort out some brakes. Sorry about the poor lighting.

Suggestions on the print would be to include all the holes for the handrail knobs rather than just the smoke box ones but no bigee. Where the supports attach to the nearside loco footplate it is tricky trying to remove them and maintain a crisp edge. That is just me being really picky as it is an excellent 3D print and unlike FUD the resin happily takes enamels :)

That is stunning. A lovely finish you have there.

You and Turbosnail must both be chuffed to bits with this.  I hope you are, you deserve to be.

I wonder if it would be possible to develop 4mm transfers for the F, F1 and B1?

This is looking excellent! Did you use the paper transfers in the end?

The handrail holes problem I noticed myself on the OO version so that's already fixed. With the supported edges, the best way I've found to keep the edge flat is to cut the supports slightly long, then use a long flat file or sandpaper block to take the rest off. Still not perfect, but that's the nature of the medium really.

I was hoping that too! The OO version is still under mechanical assembly, but won't get full transfers until I get time to design some, which won't be for some time, probably many months. If someone were to produce some in the meantime, I certainly wouldn't complain!

No, after painting the whole loco green the light green middle part of the lining was hand painted in. The yellow lining is Fox LMS yellow/black/yellow trimmed down to just one yellow and the red is from Fox mixed traffic lining. Fiddly but satisfying when you see it all come together.

Regarding the support edges it is probably slightly more of an issue in 'N' as the footplate edge is so much smaller than 'OO', less than a mm, especially with the lip running along the top. That said it's not come out too bad but that's one of the joys of working in such a ridiculously small scale :)

Thanks to Gareth for doing the test build, I have one or two minor modifications to make to the CAD drawing thanks to his feedback, then I can start sending them out to others :) So if anyone wants one (N gauge only for now, with options of F/F1/B1) then drop me a PM and I'll add some to my next print order.

Hi TurboSnail,

I found your thread through Gareth's direction on another forum. Wonderful work on your locomotives and it is so nice to see another modeller make use of CAD and 3D printing! :)

I know, but the intended emphasis was on 'us mere mortals'.

Everyone is mortal CarriageShed but I'm sure it took Gareth some time to reach his current standards. Give the F1 a go - you never know, you might just surprise yourself! :)
