MrWolf
A mixture of coal dust, ash horse muck and a little moss perhaps? 1

MrWolf
I thought that the mass produced Wills'cobblestones looked uniform, especially with eight in a row, I started seeing patterns in them! (Note to self: Must stop Miss R foraging for wild mushrooms...) But paint and muck makes a big difference I think, that join isn't noticeable under normal lighting!
RMweb Gold Graham T Posted August 16, 2022 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 16, 2022 The camera is not always our friend! I struggle to resist the temptation to try to fix all the errors that they show up; it's often more trouble than it's worth, especially if the item in question looks fine to the naked eye. That probably makes very little, if any, sense! 4

RMweb Gold chuffinghell Posted August 16, 2022 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted August 16, 2022 Obviously quite a bit to do yet but I couldn’t resist a mock up 15

I do use my photos to catch odd bits of paint I have missed or edges that are untidy, because many are noticeable once they become inaccessible, but there is definitely a limit.

RMweb Gold chuffinghell Posted August 17, 2022 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted August 17, 2022 (edited) 1st tried citadel nuln oil hoping it would tint the white filler…..but it didn’t 2nd tried a heavily thinned black paint….better but still left white patches lastly painted the whole thing with black acrylic and wiped it off, rubbed with kitchen towel and finally used a 2000 grit paper to sand off the top surface masked off and painted the ‘rails’ with sleeper grime there are some dark patches and light patches but hopefully it adds to the effect? Once dry and given a coat of matt varnish I’ll look at using some weathering powders maybe? Edited August 17, 2022 by chuffinghell 12 2
RMweb Gold chuffinghell Posted August 17, 2022 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted August 17, 2022 I’ve painted the inside of the pump house footprint so you can see more clearly where the pump house is going to live It’s also tided it up
MrWolf
The splodge on, wipe off method is what I employed for the livestock yard, subtlety is not always your friend. It looks like granite setts now though.

RMweb Gold Rowsley17D Posted August 18, 2022 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 18, 2022 Those setts look as though they pass Mr Wolf's test of a 4mm scale bike being ridden over them. Well done. I think there would be some moss growing between the setts away from well-travelled areas.
MrWolf
If it helps this is a Victorian mill yard across the road from our house. Most of the roads look like this. Okay on a 1930s standard bicycle, not so good on 1970s Tour de France machinery, which can result in the sudden feeling that one has three Adam's apples... 6
RMweb Gold chuffinghell Posted August 19, 2022 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted August 19, 2022 I’m getting there slowly matt varnish will remove the shine left by the nuln oil and help tone it down as I may have gone a bit too heavy with the wash
RMweb Gold Rowsley17D Posted August 19, 2022 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 19, 2022 Looks good from here, Chuffers. There'd be plenty of coal dust, soot and acid rain around to darken most things in the area.
RMweb Gold chuffinghell Posted August 19, 2022 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted August 19, 2022 I’ve since tried dry brushing some white and I’m quite pleased with it mock up A shame the pump house blocks most of the retaining wall 🤨 currently working on the coal bunker which is probably too small but it is what it is, I also need to build the Wills yard crane and cut down and refit the pump house doors 11

MrWolf
Very impressive Chris, everything blended in nicely, I particularly like the detail of the lamp over the steps in the back yard.

Thanks Rob, interesting to know what it will look like once the lights are powered up and the chimney is pumping out smoke, assuming they all still work
