The couplings are useful but not necessary for a diarrhearama

disassembly took seconds, for something that costs as much as it does its really is well over priced (shame on you Peco)

I have some plastic handrail knobs….I don’t even know why I have them or where they came from but I obviously kept them

I cut off the coupling ‘hook’ drilled a small hole and threw on the knobs (after filling the hole for the handrail) and a blast of black

I’m going to link up the two wagons with three links of chain

The Guinea pig next to an ‘out of the box’

I think for the two I will actually be using I’ll use brass handrail knobs because they are less bulky and I’ll be able to use a smaller chain

alternatively I might have some Peco track pins somewhere that might do the job

but I think I’ve proved the principle

It looks much better already, but I don't imagine that you're done yet are you?

I've always liked industrial and military  narrow and more than once I have thought of putting a simple quarry feeder line into a layout, but the price of stock, let alone locomotives, has always put me off.

I need to rust it up and weather it

I agree I like industrial railways too, in fact I’m thinking instead of another full layout after Warren I might just concentrate on small/medium dioramas (still railway related of course) because I really enjoy doing these individual little scenes

As hoped using brass knobs looks much better (to me) and will allow me to use a less bulky chain that will look more to scale than links the size of breeze blocks 😂

That works, it looks like a relic from the 1916 Mesopotamia campaign, rather like Gulf war surplus land rovers a century later.

I’ve been thinking (dangerous I know) but I’m thinking of painting the skip wagons blue, mainly because I fancied a different colour on the layout…..if that makes sense

In which case, you only need ask yourself one question:

"Whose train set is this?"

🤔

I think Sarah will be pleased I’ve found a use for them especially as she bought them for me before I decided to model standard gauge

Then you should ask her what colour to paint them.

I imagine she would either say “red” or she’d say “what colour do you want to paint it”

Whatever the colour there wouldn't have been much of it on show.

I asked and her first suggestion was ‘black’ I then mentioned they would have coal in then so the second suggestion as a contrasting colour was…….

……’brown’ 🙄

So I’ve painted them blue because that also starts with a ‘B’

Used the ‘Guinea pig’ to attempt to do the interior using a mixture of black and rust colour weathering powders with a stiff brush

The accumulation of grot in the base of the vee looks quite convincing...

A happy accident as I started from the base and brushed upwards so the powder is heavier at the bottom….

The vertical streaks of coal dust work well too.

…I tried to keep the brush strokes as vertical as possible. I pressed the brush on the surface quite firmly which has helped to give the streaked effect

I’ve just got to try and replicate it on the two I’m actual using

Why not use the guinea pig, seeing as it's turned out well?  Then you only have one more to make.

unfortunately it’s in the wrong colour as its been used to test various colours and weathering etc

Ever thought about the giving up the day job and going into pro-weathering? Certainly looks more realistic than the likes of Grimy Times.

high praise indeed

I obviously don’t think I’m at a professional level but thank you 🙂
