RMweb Premium Popular Post Michael Edge Posted September 16, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted September 16, 2022 Greenery finished today, the flat brown bit where the birch trees are is the site of Sovereign pit some of which still remains here. The other flat brown bit is where there wil be some cottages. The colliery branch, complete with a bit of burnt embankment, the brown trench is the course of the river. It needs quite a lot of fencing and hedges now to make sense of the landscape, very few stone wall round here, there will be just one on the layout - along Knabbs Lane at the top of the tunnel. Lots of trees, bushes and other vegetation still needed of course. I can clean the track now and get the trains running again, meanwhile signal production is under way. 30 1 2

RMweb Gold 5BarVT Posted September 17, 2022 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 17, 2022 Not only will it look stunning, the operation will be excellent too. Looking forward to seeing this on the circuit when it gets to that stage. Paul.

RMweb Premium Popular Post Michael Edge Posted September 22, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted September 22, 2022 I've made most of the signals now, even though the layout is far from complete (and they don't work yet) they will make sense of where and why the trains stop. There is one colour light distant on the signal diagram, for WJ's up home, I've moved this to the other side of Moorend Lane to keep a reasonable distance. WJ up home and down starter, the only one with a track circuit. Colliery branch up home, the elevated disc is for the colliery siding, main arm for up main. In the distance is the signal for leaving this siding. WJ down home, elevated disc for the loop/branch. Most down trains will stop here and steam locos take water. The same signal looking the other way, I can't find a single photo of the water column although the lamp on top of it is just visible in one photo of the Garratt parked here. There was another water point (parachute tank) further back near Strafford pit so that the banker could take water at the same time but this would be far too close on the layout. Returning bankers took water from a pipe off the main tank by the up line. There is one more signal at the junction, for leaving the loop towards the colliery branch. This was another LMS pattern UQ with an elevated disc but was replaced at some point with a smaller signal having two miniature arms - much easier to build and make work but I'm not sure when this was done. All other moves are ground discs, including a yellow one but I don't think I'm going to make all of them work - I suspect many moves were made on the authority of a wave from the box at this remote location. All the signals except the colour light (an ancient Eckon) are built from Wizard (MSE) components. 25 1

John76
Mike The signals really look the part. For those of us whose primary interest wasn't (but might end up being) steam, whats a parachute tank???? is it just a small water tank? Any photos would help? I'm guessing there must have been a similar arrangement up at West Silkstone Junction. John

RMweb Premium uax6 Posted September 23, 2022 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 23, 2022 The signals all look good, except that Eckon! Do you have a photo of the proper one Mike? RMweb Premium Michael Edge Posted September 23, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted September 23, 2022 Thanks for the ground signal photo, mine aren't quite right but I had to do something now. A "parachute tank" is a small cylindrical tank on a post - you can see it in some of the early photos around Strafford pit. I don't have a photo of the colour light, or any other c/l distant on the MSW but it's there on WJ signal diagram. It's been lying in my signal spares box for decades and will do for now.

Just realised that the biggest no-no is the phone on the post at a distant. Something to remove in the future. Paul.
RMweb Premium uax6 Posted September 23, 2022 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 23, 2022 Mike, I've done a quick google of the woodhead line, and its quite interesting in that it looks like it was equipped with colour-lights with flat top sighting boards and tapered hoods. I'm not an expert here, but they look a bit like my Metro-vick Hernia that I have in the garden (so called as it is so bleeding heavy!), but with 'pig's ears' on the side so that the drive (if stood at it would be able to see the main aspect still), but I wonder if they would be fitted on distants (mine has the castings for them, but they are not fitted). More interestingly the two aspect ones at Woodhead, are actually three aspect heads with the centre aspect blacked off! Presumably this was to allow power-box working to be installed later? That would make an interesting signal make. http://www.disused-stations.org.uk/w/woodhead/woodhead(john_green6.1982)old6.jpg Theres a good back view of one there as well.. I assume the '1982' in the filename is the date of the photo, certainly in 1987 the S&T were mixing and matching to make one good signal out of three duff ones. I've a photo taken from the box at Huddersfield Junction of our S&T Lineman laying several spare signal heads out behind his van whilst trying to cure a persistent fault on one, if I can find it I'll post it. How much earlier that was going on I don't know but the amount of (by 1987) non-standard kit at Penistone was unbelievable; it was often the case that, rather than send the duty faulting team to spend half a shift fruitlessly scratching their heads, non-critical faults were left until a particular lineman was on duty because he had either fixed it last time or had installed it in the first place !

RMweb Premium Michael Edge Posted September 23, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted September 23, 2022 The one in the photo at Woodhead isn't a distant though - it's red/green with the yellow missing, otherwise it wouldn't have a diamond board.
RMweb Premium Michael Edge Posted September 23, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted September 23, 2022 Signalling on the Worsbrough branch wasn't the same as the main line, almost all of it was (new) semaphores, at least down to Aldam Junction.
RMweb Premium t-b-g Posted September 23, 2022 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 23, 2022 (edited) Hello Mike. You are probably aware of this already but just in case, I will attach this link to a drawing of a GCR "Parachute" water tank/column. This is available on the website along with a good number of other MSLR/GCR drawings for fences, loading gauges, platforms, cattle pens etc. Very useful for people like us! http://www.swithland-signal-works.co.uk/plans/46_PARACHUTE_WATER_COLUMN.jpg Maybe a nice one for an etched kit? (hint hint) Edit to add for the tank anyway, the pipes etc won't etch easily! Edited September 23, 2022 by t-b-g To add content
