Bocott Steel

Work continues on the adjustments. Hopefully the pictures show it clearly.

Basically the run round via the platform line is no more. Which has enabled me to extend one of the sides of the loop into the steel factory . So that now gives me two sidings for that industry.

I was hoping to crack on with the extension but sadly funds prevent that at the moment. So I'll just carry on finishing off the steel sidings. Plenty to keep me busy there.

The hard standing is yet to be glued down and painted/weathered.

Not a lot more to add really..

Afternoon,

It's phone a friend time.. I'm after your views on a potential change of use for Redbrook sidings.

20190522_161948_resized.jpg.3eaed2ee9e87a5304e7144168b07de7d.jpg

With the extension in full swing, and therefore more sidings I'm considering adapting it into a small depot..  20190522_162254_resized.jpg.c31ea9f4dd5076e9f10e4e5f74bfe68a.jpg Now I know it's very cliche using the scenecraft depot and office but that's what I have to hand. My idea is to shorten the two tracks furthest away, so the buffers would be by the red track spacer.  With the nearest line staying as is..

Views??

Whilst I've got you. looking back at the main board, the siding with VGAs is going to represent another business, obviously I can't model the actual building but I want to add  something to the hard standing to show the type of industry. So I'm after some suggestions for that too. The siding can hold 3 VGAs or similar size wagons.  20190522_161836_resized.jpg.1f7d4b263ee32b4ca61dc8eb89ce9fa0.jpg

Thanks in advance for any suggestions you may come up with.

Will the office move over a tad and allow one siding to be longer? Having a depot makes sense now you’ve got the other side as well as the works. Three destinations should give loads of options for traffic and the shed can be a loco storage area and somewhere for fuel traffic as a fourth destination too.

With the VGA siding you could model the side of the building a couple of inches tall using a flat with holes cut in for the doors and a strip of 15mm square wood as the loading platform and forklifts shifting it from the platform to the wagons? The pallets can be wrapped and be virtually anything or chemical drums etc.

the doors would make alternative photo windows.

Timber unloading area maybe Scott?

Yes it's possible Andy, thanks.

I'm sure I saw on one of the many YouTube videos around South Wales, a load of timber wagons in a rake.

Yes it can be moved to allow that.

I did think about just having pallets of items and a fork lift, didn't think of a part of a building though.

But you get the idea that I want to operate it a bit like a US railroad with different industries. I've even been looking at waybills etc..

Pontrilas (I think it is on the English side of the border) has timber traffic.

Yes operation can be very simple, just designate the two, or more, locations each wagon works between and one can be a yard where they then depart for the rest of the world assigned to specific trains in different tracks. They can sit there for a bit while you deal with the other trains then cycle them again. At the start of a session shuffle the pack so to speak so wagons are allocated slightly differently at the the marshalling yard so it’s not exactly the same. I use simple car cards on the 009 but there’s free and paid software like jmri etc that can create shunt lists that are similar to TOPS lists but give the option of destinations too.

I’ll keep letting you know the US meets and eventually one might fall right :)

Afternoon,

So, moving on from yesterdays posts; I had a look at the depot again this morning and went ahead with some changes.

I decided to put the office block in a different location.

20190523_133923_resized.jpg.b1dfcad7d1993312c00b17e33c5906e5.jpg

As a result I've put something else in its place at the far end.

20190523_134000_resized.jpg.3af453f76300e4190dcaeb22abde4607.jpg

I'll add sone pipework to, which will enable me to have a couple of TTA's

Tripped in every now and again.

The coach in the below picture will become a permanent fixture, suitably weathered into its surroundings and used as storage etc.. one day I'll get round to replacing it with the type seen at Godfrey Road, Newport back in the day.

20190523_144033.jpg.4fedcb6f90d3e62ab8c0efb8e283e76a.jpg

I'm just in the process of doing the hard standing for the depot building, so more on that at a later date.

Scott, the speed in work you work always astounds me! I can barely draw a plan (for something less than 4 feet) in 3 months and you decide on changes and then carry them out in no time at all!

I really like where you've lifted the sidings to make them smaller. I really like the fresher ballast there as It makes a super contrast.

Also have a sneaking fondness for the Mainline 37 in triple grey! (But, as a steam man myself, don't tell anyone)

Morning,

Thanks 1722 for your comments, my progress has been aided by shift work and not having my children. That will change from 3pm today when they finish school, so it will be down tools for a week as its half term.

I did manage to crack on with the hard standing, still need to weather the track with oil spillages etc and add some long grass to make it all look a bit like it's on its last legs as a depot.

I'll be in touch Paul!

20190524_080056.jpg.7463f9617029231cc317bc5a034a8327.jpg

Other than that, no further developments.

Hi Scott, The new depot area looks great.  It looks like you are going to have plenty of sidings for shunting and the roundy roundy idea will give you the chance to sit back and watch trains run past if you want.

Cheers Peter.

Found this one from my own collection.   Newport. 20190522_172308_resized.jpg.0c52b583216b4906fbaa9674bc3cc589.jpg

Sadly, Pontrilas hasn't received timber for quite a while. The wagons worked down from Scotland to Alexandra Dock Jct. They would then be taken to Pontrilas, where the siding trailed off the Up goods loop. Empty wagons would be collected, loaded ones dropped off, and the loco and empties would proceed to Hereford, where the wagons were dropped off to be collected by a Northbound Speedlink. It was a regular working for a Parcels Sector loco, using one that would otherwise have sat idle all day.

Thanks for the additional photos of Newport, it was certainly the best era, I do have quite a few in my archives too. Fond memories.

Interesting info about the timber operations, maybe I'll add a Res 47 to my wish list; and looking at those pictures, a fleet of Dutch 37's.

I think the coach at Newport is a MK2 brake you can just about see it this pic.

Does look like a Mk2. Looks like SAT Link colours which fits with Godfrey Road being adjacent to Newport Area S&T seen in the background just behind the signal. Quite what it was used for I don’t know (and would be interested to!).

Posts crossed. I’ll go and look at your thread.

Paul.

Afternoon,

I've managed to do the oil stained track, and generally tidy up around the depot.

Ideally I need to start on the depot clutter, my bits box didn't have as much as I thought in it, so I'll have to do a bit of internet research and see what I can find. 20190525_124813.jpg.04ab95dfccdb8719ddc3fe303709e250.jpg

For your period you might want to paint his legs a different colour as mandatory ‘all orange’ is only really about ten years old and was rare before that ;)

I did think that, and tried a quick Google search for dates, but failed..

So the back story is that he's part of the uniform evaluation team and is trying out the new gear.  Redbrook the home of trend setters.

Edit.. I've just painted his trousers!

Middle shot maybe 2004, Andy , but not the others. 47033 ended up in Europe a colours and 37191 was scrapped in 2001....and those two have pre 98 warning flashes . I’d wager those two are about 1994 .

Just re checked my files Rob, and you are spot on for 1994, and so they wouldn't have been taken by me either in that case.

George and I went there in July 2004 and again in July 2005. 04 was brilliant with none stop action, 05 was total rubbish and we left about 13.00hrs.

Thanks for pointing out the error of the pics, and if Scott, or anyone else wants them removed I will gladly do so, but they are still superb pics.
