ews60002
Hi All, I'm off to cornwall next friday for a week and want to go to a few model shops in cornwall. Where are the best ones to visit. I know Kernow models and Inter-city models are the known ones but I'm after other ones to visit. Any others I should visit? Thanks Mathew
RMweb Gold Brinkly Posted April 18, 2010 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 18, 2010 Does the Bodmin and Wenford railway have a shop? Because that might be somewhere to look. Regards, Nick
RMweb Gold Stubby47 Posted April 18, 2010 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 18, 2010 Bodmin & Wenford does have a shop, mainly books and DVDs, not much in the way of model stuff. Team Track Trading, in Reduth, are American HO & N guage specialists, and 'The World of Model Railways' at Mevagissy is good for narrow gauge and bit's and peices. As you've mentioned Kernow in Camborne and Inter City in Porthleven are worth going to. There is also a nice model shop in St. Austell, further east I'm not too sure. Gulliver
Speaking ss a resident of Cornwall I would say you really have to visit Kernow. Other claim to be specialists in areas, which really is code for not much stock! They have a huge range at Kernow on display and you can check their stock levels on their website if you want a specific item. Mevagissey is worth a visit, the model railway exhibition is excellent. Bodmin & Wenford have a small shop as part of their gift shop. Well run but only really a few model railway items at what is primarily geared to tourists. They might have some older, harder to find, models still in stock though. Beware of a special trip to Intercity, I would call first to make sure they are actually open as their hours can vary from what they advertise in my experience. frame69
http://americanrailroadcentre.com/ This is a great little (and I mean little) shop even for those not modelling american. Also your trip could coincide with one of the toy fairs that are well attended. These are held at Lostwithiel and Indian Queens. If you want details I could possibly find out for you. Frame. edcayton
There used to be a splendid place in Penzance which was a gents' outfitters in the front and a model railway shop in the back. I have no idea if it is still there though. Ed
RMweb Premium Gwiwer Posted April 19, 2010 RMweb Premium Share Posted April 19, 2010 There used to be a splendid place in Penzance which was a gents' outfitters in the front and a model railway shop in the back. I have no idea if it is still there though. Ed Think I recall the one you mean Ed and so far as I know it's long gone. When in Cornwall Kernow must be the number 1 stop. They are probably among the top 5 retailers in the country now and you'd be hard-pressed to beat their service anywhere. The others mentioned are fine but rather more limited. I'd definitely consider Mevagissey as you get to see trains running as well. I am not connected with any of the businesses discussed.

ews60002
Thanks for the advice on shops, I have been to Kernows and liked the shop alot. also been to Intercity too which was a weird experience. I ordered a few special wagons from them, mainly being the Yeomans hopper wagons and box wagons but never heard from them again. will try and order them again next week. Does kernows do the odd stuff we modellers look for like replica tail lamps, chains and other fine details. I wasn't looking for that stuff last time but as I'm getting better in doing modelling stuff, these are the items I look for.ThanksMathew
RMweb Gold Stubby47 Posted April 20, 2010 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 20, 2010 Matthew, Note that Inter City has moved premises, you'll now find them down the lane to the left of the little supermarket - and they are not open on Wednesdays. Kernow tend to only do mainstream stuff, but you might find the odd bits around. Good for Raito/Wills, Gaugemaster scenics, Merit & Harbourn Hobbies bits. Not much O gauge bits, nothing like Langleys/Shawplan/Bill Bedford stuff. HTH Stu (no connection, etc)
Bernard Lamb
Not railways but boats. However they do have an excellent stock of tools and materials. I have used them for strip wood as well as various ships fittings. Only know them through mail order but they seem do seem to be very efficient. http://www.cornwallmodelboats.co.uk/ Bernard
