The 6:25am Fish/Perishable arrives hauled by a Jubilee.

The Hunslet has already moved the parcels stock for unloading.

Shortly afterwards the first Jubilee propels the ECS of the N.Irishman to Stranraer Town to run it into the coach sidings...

(sorry for the giants paintbrush)

The next train at the Harbour Station is the 7:40am DMU to Dunragit/Glasgow St Enoch.

This runs into the station and then departs.  It should be a Swindon built Class 126 and it should be six coaches long....

Which brings us to around 11:00am giving the Hunslet time to shunt.

The pier is now pretty much devoted to goods traffic as the 8:15am is a Stranraer Town service.

The next arrival will be the 11:32am from Glasgow St Enoch...

Which duly arrives behind a 5MT- Stranraer’s own 44789

The 11:42am from London Euston arrives at Stranraer Town (off scene).

The 11:48am Glasgow St Enoch which is hauled by the same 6P Jubilee that arrived this morning with the Down N.Irishman is also a Stranraer Town departure so is off scene.   That train works to St Enoch and then returns to Stranraer leaving Glasgow at 5:10pm.

I almost forgot the 11:50am DMU return via Dunragit.

The 5MT releases to Stranraer Shed and the Hunslet is busy with the basis of the 12:20pm XP goods and cattle to Carlisle...

which brings us to Midday and completes today’s session.

The next passenger service from the Harbour will be the 12:17pm to Newcastle...

I hope you have enjoyed the timetabled services :)

The 12:17pm to Newcastle is ready to depart.  In the absence of a Gresley BCK it has been strengthened with a P2 ex LMS BK.  73079 is in charge.

42919 H/F Crab arrives to take the 12:20pm Cattle/XP goods.  It’s all fitted so its running under those headlamps.

The 12:17pm then departs to Newcastle..

Well done,

I think you just like playing with the Hunslet?  A video next?

What a super difference a coat of black paint does for the Hornby Caledonian Pug.

Speak again

Ray

The Hunslet is an awesome model.

I’ve tried and failed to add videos so I’ve given up atm...

Certainly looks like an interesting layout to operate. It’s all about fun. Glad you got your Clan

Cheers, it is a great layout to operate.  I think I need some station platforms!!!

I’ve done some ballasting with the DCC Concepts Steam Era ballast...

Meanwhile back to the timetable-

I don’t need to worry about the 1:26pm Goods as it uses the Town Goods Yard.

44762 has propelled the stock into the Harbour Station for the 1:40pm departure to Dumfries.

The 1:30pm DMU to Glasgow via Dunragit prepares to leave the bay.

As the clock reaches 2:06pm we see  Jubilee 45715 bringing in the service from Dumfries.  It’s holiday season so the stock is bolstered.

Now I’ve realised I also need a way of tracking my locos otherwise I’ll end up with locos that should be in Carlisle showing up in Stranraer!

The 2:14pm DMU service also arrives and this time the photographer is ready!

This is actually another DMU set (use imagination please) as the other one is still winding its way to Glasgow.

Maybe I should use the STD 4MT tank for this service?

I think the Hornby 2P would also be ideal with three non corridor coaches in tow.

The Jubilee has fire irons!  I need to get some more of these for the Crab tenders.

Liking the new Clan, Dan.

As for for keeping track of where your locos, dmus, and trains are, you need to have some sort of ball park time of how long they should be out of the picture for before they return.  A Stranraer loco leaving with a train for Glasgow or Carlisle is probably towards the start of it’s day’s duty, and, with its crew, will probably return about  5 or 6 hours later, giving time to dispose the stock and return to shed within an 8 hour working day.

This is for passenger and parcels trains; your freights, even the fully fitted cattle trains, are probably locos that won’t be back until tomorrow having overnighted in Glasgow or Carlisle.  The crews may even be on ‘double home’ duty, booking off and lodging before working back the next day.

The reverse red applies to visiting locos, which will arrive on passenger/parcel trains, visit Stranraer shed for coal, water, and turning, to re-appear an hour or so later for their back working.  Freight jobs may be longer on shed, or back sooner like the passenger jobs; freight work usually used more coal over a given time as the trains were heavier and slower so locos tended to need more time on shed.

Work out out how long round trips to Dumfries or Dunagrit take and you have some idea how long all your workings need to take to re-appear.  This is part of the challenge of timetable working, and how far you take it up to you.  I am fairly strict when it comes to locos and passenger sets, but one rake each of empty and loaded minerals must represent the 6 colliery clearances Cwmdimbath Pit needs each day to remain in production.  Parcels and freight stock occupies a sort of compromise area.

Then in you can introduce a ‘Spaniard in the works’ element of randomly generating incidents, such as loco failures, crew absence, hot boxes, collapsed wagon doors, whatever comes to mind.  Dice or playing cards at the beginning of each day’s timetable can do this, or you can just arbitrarily make it up as you go along; a minor incident to mess the timetable up about every 5 days feels about right to me.  On a single track railway the knock on effect on timekeeping, crew availability for return working, and operations in general can be quite severe, and your layout might include cancelled sailings in bad weather, or ships late on the berth because of fog.  Caledonian Princess has very good radar for her time, but must still reduce speed at a time when many fishing and merchant vessels didn’t; the North Channel is a major shipping lane and very busy.

'Tis looking rather good.

Ballasting is tedious but well worth the effort.  I was getting to bothered by all the drawing pins.

Not sure how many comments you have had but I do like the collection of '60s cars.  I keep seeing the Austin A40 Farina - same as the one a fellow student owned back in university days.

Cheers Ray!

Good pointers :)

I really do need to sit down with the timetables again or even is a card system to show which loco is where!

I reached into the loco box to pull out 44789 but realised I’d despatched it somewhere else!

The loco which worked the Down N.Irishman has a fairly well planned set of workings:

5:28am arrive

6:25am to shed

11:48am to Glasgow St Enoch

5:10pm return

8:09pm arrive

To shed

22:00pm to Carlisle with the up N.Irishman then to Kingmoor shed which means...

Another 6P/6MT or double headed combo needs to take the next working in...

Cheers about the ballast.  I do wonder if the colour is too dark grey?

Best

2:30pm sees the Hunslet remove one of the extra coaches into a siding.

2:45pm sees the Jubilee propel the ECS back to Stranraer Town.  This forms the basis of the 3:50pm departure from Stranraer Town to Dumfries.  The Jubilee will be turned coaled and watered at Stranraer Shed.

The Hunslet will then assemble the milk train from the (unfinished) milk facilities..

The milk facilities will be a small platform.  Transfer pipes and a small building.

The tanker with the white body will be repainted...

There’s a light load on the 3:00pm milk train today.   The opportunity is taken to run Jubilee 45596 back to

Kingmoor...

Johnster-how’s that for a basis to model your folks car?

Just seen how horrendous  the wall end looks!! Eek!!! Scenic skills :(
