A few eBay bargains...

lima Ex LMS GUV

mainline Ex LMS Stanier BG

All now running on nice and smooth Hornby coach wheels :)

Also managed to get some used large radius points which fixes some bad running in the goods yard :)

The Goods Yard Piranha has been busy dissecting the incoming goods traffic :)

The Lima GUV (I'm on the lookout for one of these myself) will be improved by substituting Mainline/Bachmann LMS bogies; as supplied it has B1 BR standard bogies, a failing shared by the Lima GW Siphon G.

Ballasting is a chore but seriously improves the appearance of your track, which will look superb once you've painted the sides of the rails.

Cheers,

I’ve got some of them spare (I think)...

Yeah I’m very pleased with the DCC Concept legacy steam era ballast.  I’ve started to paint a few bits.  A lengthy job ahead!

I am not careful with rail painting; life is too short!  Mask the areas of pointwork that need protection, where the blades close on the stockrails, and splash it on.  Do this even if you do not rely on this closure for electrical connection, as they need to close properly for reliable running without derailments  Then, when it's gone off and your layout looks like it's a station that's been abandoned for a couple of years but not had the track lifted, use a Peco track cleaner or similar to rub the railheads bright again.

When you finished ballasting (by the way I paint the track before ballasting) make sure you clean out all the flangeways on pointwork because all sorts of crud will have got in there.  I use stiff pound shop children's paint brushes for this job; you get half a dozen brightly coloured ones for a squid, and they have all sorts of uses...

Now we see both of the main evening Boat Trains ready to leave.  The Jubilee warms its carriages whilst the passengers from the Caledonian Princess find their seats/cabins.

The Stanier 5MT simmers away.  It will leave first and has some hard running ahead.

The Jubilee also has the gradients of the Port Road to defeat and will reach Carlisle at approx 1:19am where it will retire to Kingmoor Shed.

The timings for these will be:

9:20pm to Glasgow

10pm to Euston

On Saturday it’s the 9:30pm to Carlisle with through coaches to Newcastle.  I’m not exactly sure why it differed on Saturday.  I guess the other portion then ran to Glasgow?

One thing I have realised is that I need to use the 5MT’s that have arrived for shunting.  The Harbour Yard is almost full and the Hunslet has got lots of stock to move still!

The next arrival is the 9:45pm from Glasgow hauled by a rather beautiful Fowler 2P!

This is a new arrival from Rails EBay.   I’ve got a new book on the South West Scottish scene and the 2P was a key type.  Most were lined but I’ve found a few pictures of late crest unlined examples.

At 10pm the Jubilee starts the UP N.Irishman sleeper to Euston.  The Jubilee will run to Carlisle where it will hand over to a waiting 7MT which will take the train south.

A Clan backs into the Harbour.  It will take charge of the 10:40pm parcel and fish to Carlisle.

I The 11:32pm DMU from Glasgow arrives.

The 11:48pm departure to Glasgow sits awaiting the 2P which is being turned at Stranraer Shed and taking on some water This will be the final working from the Harbour until 5:28am when it all repeats but a different 6MT/6P will be in charge of the N.Irishman or two 5MT’s?

I hope you have enjoyed this elongated running session and to close...the Hunslet shunts...

I need to make a few changes to the timetable but overall I’m fairly happy with it.

Feedback welcome!

Hi Dan

Things have certainly moved on very fast. I am glad to see you have worked out a timetable.

One question, you aren't going to make that lovely Clan all muddy are you?

Hi Clive,

Indeed :)

It will need to look like this...

Its been great watching you work out the timetable .  Very interesting workings there .  Operation is something that is quite often ignored or passed over in mag articles on layouts , but for me its actually one of the more interesting aspects . You've got some great stock now  to run it too.  That Hunslet works hard!

Really interesting thread . Well done Dan

The only work I’ve been able to do over these past couple of days between work is to repaint and re line (using decals) an Airfix Stanier Brake I picked up cheap off EBay.

I think its come out ok?

Im tempted to pick up another one and a comp to run a three coach rake.  I’ve got a mainline Brake, Comp, Brake set so this would be the counterpart.

What I’ve found interesting is comparing the mainline Comp to the old Hornby Comp the Mainline appears to be 60ft and the old Hornby 57ft.

I think from what I have read the Mainline is correct?

The Mainline set needs the roofs repainting NATO Black.

Yes, the Hornby compo is based on their 1970's/80's generic 57' GWR-esque chassis, which leads to the wrong roof profile, corridor ends and I think, bogies as well.

The Airfix 57' and 60' Stanier Period 3 coaches are much more accurate and although a little basic, can be fettled into something quite acceptable and are a useful starting point for conversions using Comet sides.
