Tanyglaslyn - the latest project. (The thread formally known as Lockdown Projects)

If anyone on here looks at my Flickr site they'll have spotted a few weeks ago I went to the Dinorwic slate quarries on a bit of a research trip and to source some slate. Whilst being being for the forth coming Quarry Hunslets and still in need of finishing touches here is a few photos (the light tonight was too good to resist when I was cleaning the trackwork, of my latest project 'Avalon shed' inspired by the dinorwic quarries, the intention is for one fiddle yard to be a fully landscaped representation of a gallery. The slate on the model is genuine Dinorwic slate from up in the galleries and crushed.

Stunning as always Karl. I particularly like the fact that the slate is the only scenic medium, adding a soothing monotone to the scene. 👍

That's very kind thank you very much. I might add a couple of weeds etc but from research I did there wasn't much of that in the quarries!

As any casual follower of this thread will know there's always a flurry of activity every so often. So for anyone who recall Cwm Bach the Cambrian halt and it's extension Cambrianesque bridge, here's another extension board or stand alone simple board. The short 1 in 40 Parkfield Bank/Cutacre Lane Crossing. Again the light tonight was lovely. I think I'm going to do away with back scenes on these in future (etc things. like walls/rock faces) so I can do more shots with the landscape behind. Thanks to @Alister_G Landmanlow Sidings thread for the inspiration there!

(Apologies for the obvious buildings behind in some!)

I’d swear that’s a real place, not a model!

That is a very high compliment, thankyou very much. The whole scene is in the footprint of a box file and I have the confess the weathering on the engines and the painting of the people is not my handy work.

Very nice modelling, very realistic, can I ask where you got your shed figures from please?

Jerry.

Thankyou very much. The natural light really helps I think, even if I did get some strange looks from the delivery driver across the road as I was balancing the thing on top of my car to take photos! The figures are Modelu3d painted by Dan Evason of Tunnel Lane Models.

Having grabbed (quite) a few bargains at the collectors club sale yesterday I now finally have a Coal Tank in one of my preferred liveries for her following some quick transfer swapping yesterday afternoon. A snap of her on Lockdown Wharf.

A beautiful evening down on 'Avalon Shed' this evening with two Double Fairlie showing some signs of weathering but clearly the pride of the crew with that paraffin clean, and Prince engaged in shunting in some stunning light.

It was whilst sitting on top of one of the tunnels in the Aberglaslyn Pass at the WHR100 event a few weeks ago that I decided it would be nice to have something inspired by the pass and the section of the FR that runs above the houses at Tanygrisiau on which to run my fairly, england and mainline hunslet fleet. So the genesis of 'Tanyglaslyn' was born and the last few weekends have seen trial of different arrangements before settling on a basic plan culminating the in the first applications of grey to the landscape today. So thought I'd share some of the progress so far.

  • Karl changed the title to Tanyglaslyn - the latest project. (The thread formally known as Lockdown Projects)

Some colour washes were put on the rock faces last week (the shiny areas will have vegetation on them) and having returned from 4 days at the Edinburgh Festival these have dried and a quick photo in the sun. Some more blending in is needed but it's thankfully taken the shine of the grey out and given it a bit more variation.

A few more washes over the rocks and the first elements of landscaping going on now, quick photo in some nice light this afternoon.

Superb stuff Karl, the cottages, wall and railway high on a ledge remind me of somewhere... Oh yes - Tanygrisiau in rather challenging weather!

Thanks Ralf, that was some day to be out wasn't it. What were we thinking!?! It was a nod to Tanygrisau I was after having neither the inclination or ability to recreate an actual place! I see you're having a dabble with the Canal wharf box file, I tried that and just could not get on with it for some reason. You're idea of getting some laser cut wood to the templates is a belter! I've a huge collection of JSM kits awaiting the building of a proper wharf layout too. There is something about modelling industry isn't there.
