Controversy over a new paint job for the official A330!  It needs to represent the Country say proponents whilst others say the cash would be better spent on other things.  There is always a cry when what is seen as frivolous takes precedent over what others might regard as equally important.  If the POTUS can have a Super 747 in what is universally considered to be an attractive livery, then the UK should have  at least a A330 with a smart paint job instead of the RAF work's grey!  Its important to give a good impression of the country when abroad especially when future Royals travel.  It was bad enough losing the Britannia!

Bloody stupid waste of money.  We'll be paying off the effects of C-19 for the next umpty-ump years; blowing the thick end of a million quid on cans of paint is silliness.

edit:  Park it up London for a few days and let the locals do an aerosol job on it.  Save a fortune.

It is a military aircraft with an occasional VIP role.

pale grey = camouflage

bright colours = target

Best wishes

Firstly it isn't £900k for a repaint, it has had a heavy overhaul which included new paint. It's also used far more than just BJ's taxi, non of this makes a "good" news story so the media just focus on the livery issue.

I take it you are talking about a plane rather than a road?

I got caught out , read the first sentence of the post, then googled to find where the A330  ran to and from.

Post Brexit the official plane should not be a A330.

It should be..., A De Havilland  Comet, or a BAC One-Eleven, Vickers VC10 or maybe a Bristol Britannia (yer that sounds right), what about a Bristol Brabazon. Oh!, I think that maybe I have gone too far yet again.

To show the true ability (RIP) of the UK it should be Concorde (Ok, the French had a little input too).  It's more likely to be a Sopwith Pup though.

Do you have a source for that as you'd think official spokespeople would be at pains to point that bit out.

New liveries on political executive air transport has been a big story in the US.

Aircraft used for the AF1 flight designation still carry an iconic Raymond Loewy design first applied in 1962, at the behest of JFK. It replaced a hideous safety orange nose-end dip with white over polished aluminium which properly belonged in the 1950s.

Lowey was a prolific industrial designer and designed many locomotive 'stylings' for the Pennsylvania Railroad (including streamliners S1, T1, Q1 and the GG1 electric locomotive).

The current inhabitant of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue wants to put his stamp on the AF1 design. (Putting his 'stamp' on things is very much his thing.) He has a model on a coffee table in his elliptical office in red, white and blue which he wants to see implemented. Apparently he likes to show it to visitors. To the best of my knowledge it has not yet been applied.

These A330 Voyagers, are part of a private finance contract and are owned by a Tanker consortium of Airbus, Rolls Royce and others. That name indicates their primary role, as airborne refuelling planes, replacing the old VC10s. Nearly half of the fleet are leased by the consortium to commercial operators, but can supposedly be adapted quickly to their military role, the others are in RAF squadron service. The one that fulfilled the VIP role is in the current RAF fleet, and was adapted for the VIP role in 2014 I think, for David Cameron, Boris Johnson's ex friend, do you see a bit of one upmanship coming here.

The original conversion retained the aircraft's military capability for transporting personnel or air refuelling, presumably why it was left in RAF operational camouflage colours. Now in it's new Blackpool rock colours, will it be used in an operational refuelling role, unlikely. Chalk off one RAF refuelling aircraft for a Boris vanity project. Bit like the water cannon he bought for London riot control, while mayor, without Home Office approval, which had to be scrapped.
