<pedant> Strictly speaking, "metal monolith" is a contradiction in terms since a monolith is, by definition, made of stone.  But "metal pillar" doesn't sound so interesting and probably wouldn't have attracted the widespread interest that the article in question seems to have done.</pedant>

I see that the German equivalent, a giant wooden** on a mountaintop* has also suddenly disappeared!

I notice that in the stock photo the BBC is using to illustrate the report, the walkers are desperately trying to avoid being photographed looking at the thing...
