They're made from the same sort of plastic that bogie sideframes are made from, so much stronger than the crappy styrene pan that comes with the 87. The springing is quite severe, and there's a graceful curve on the upper section, but I may be able to make it serviceable. RMweb Gold 97406 Posted February 18, 2022 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 18, 2022 (edited) My updated 86/0 has been outshopped this morning. Happy memories of the 0s and 3s running around in pairs in banger blue. Edited March 31, 2022 by 97406

47606odin
Because of your thread, I’ve had to get my roarer back. I had sold it to a friend of mine. I had weathered it and was very happy with it. I think this was a fair swap for a dirty log I still had here she is, now I need the 86 and 87 to arrive to keep me out of mischief until the 92’s rock up nb. I noticed from these photos the body wasn’t fitted correctly. This has now been rectified Edited February 19, 2022 by 47606odin

I forward dated one of those as I could only get an early rail blue one at the time with a broken pantograph. The recessed gutters got filled in and there’s new gutters, a Sommerfeldt pantograph and temporary air tanks off that HO scale class 81 held in place with Blu Tack. At some point I want to do an 81 based on the Bachy 85. I also have styrene tube for new air tanks. 3

It appears I may have another 85 on its way, and now a modern 90. So because of this thread, I’ve got 2 85’s, an 86, an 87 on there way and 2 92’s on order, plus a few appropriate wagons to suit, I’m going to have to build something to display them on 1

RMweb Gold PjKing1 Posted February 20, 2022 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 20, 2022 (edited) I have to admit this thread has inspired me, the fictional ‘off scene’ ac stabling point is now going to be an ‘on scene’ ac stabling point. One of the ideas I'm currently cogitating on is for the spare bedroom, with a spur into the fitted closet at the rear left. The spur will be the existing layout. It is not likely to happen for a good few years as I'm chokka with work, the locos and other activities at the moment, but I have a decent amount of time to formulate the plan. It may end up in a nice shed in the garden as an alternative. Edited February 21, 2022 by 97406

Sounds interesting, I really need to get the garage set up properly, or ideally move somewhere with a purpose build man cave as we do want to move in the next few years. I might dust Templot off tonight and see what I can come up with as regards to my stabling point. Paul
47606odin
Well, I’ve succumbed to another Heljan 86, as my 85 got cancelled as the shop decided it is too difficult to post to Australia now so now I have 404 coming to join 622 and will become eventually after I tweak the paint job, 417 The Kingsman

Look forward to see what you do with the 86. I’d probably leave moving the red/white stripe down by the fraction of a mm if the end is going full yellow, as it was only noticeable to me around the headcode box. I have 7 of the latest Heljan 86s now and 3 Hornby ones, too in a cupboard upstairs. Time to move on to some 87s next, which will be 3 in total when I’ve finished the new ones. RMweb Gold 97406 Posted February 27, 2022 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 27, 2022 (edited) I have just outshopped the first of 2 87s that are available brand new from either Hattons or Kernow for £120-odd. I backdated it so it's in mid-80s condition with the more modern roof detail removed and the holes filled in. The MU gear is based on moulds taken from Hornby class 50 with fuse wire for the cable. The original style of high intensity headlight is some styrene tube with some black marker pen applied and a short length of acrylic rod up the middle. The pantograph is the Limby class 92 one with the springs removed and diliute acrylic varnish applied to all the joints to make them a little stiffer so it is posable. It is a lot more robust than the utterly bobbins pantograph that came with the loco that falls apart if you sneeze near to it. The top section of the pan was straightened by pouring boiling water on it and then bending it back into a straight(ish) line. It started out as 87001, but it is now numbered and named as 87025 County of Cheshire. The cab fronts and one lower bodyside have been resprayed with Precision Paints signal yellow and BR blue. It'll be staying ex-works as I do like the odd clean banger blue loco every now and again. Edited March 31, 2022 by 97406
RMweb Gold 97406 Posted February 27, 2022 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 27, 2022 (edited) I had the pleasure stumbling across this video whilst looking up information of the Class 87. What do you think of the roof’s blue colour compared to the 47? I did wonder if it needed darkening a little bit before I eventually decided to respray mine into Executive. I’m considering tweaking the pan head a bit, and I’m not sure the entire roof well should be dark blue. Trouble is, I don’t know anyone from CE who would have worked on them then, and can’t see on photos
RMweb Gold 97406 Posted March 1, 2022 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted March 1, 2022 (edited) I've finally taken the plunge and got me a Skoda. The eventual aim is to have another in IC Swallow and one in IC Mainline to go with it. I may end up respraying another railfreight example into IC Swallow as they are rare and expensive. The pantograph is excellent, showing up Hornby's shoddy effort even more! Edited March 31, 2022 by 97406
