Brilliant little project! Good idea to strengthen the cassette with balsa. I made a similar cassette for my boxfile layout but it warped and kept causing derailments - hope you get better luck. I think you will as you seem to know what you're doing far better than I do! 🤪

A good way of getting your mojo back - thoroughly recommended! I have a feeling that you might have based it on my box file in said e mag. Out of interest which one? If I am right, I am much flattered.

I seem to have lost my copy of the e-mag and cant remember where I saw it online.

The Micro Model Railway Dispatch was the e-mag
I did take some screenshots of the pages I wanted, the layout was called Bleak Moor Loco Shed.

I've done a bit more scenic work, but its currently got wet glue all over it.
Once thats dry I will take a photo.

I think today is going to be a day of making scrap loads, and weathering stuff down to make it look like its rusted

I managed to get a fair bit of scenery down over the last 2 days.

I made a small tree to more hide the fiddle yard entrance. Made from seafoam, scatters, and flocks spray glued on to the seafoam, as its a small tree I didnt bother with foam bits first, especially as I am modelling the early/late autumn season which is why its got some leaves turning. Under the tree I have crushed up some actual dead leaves to give the appearance of already fallen leaves, they were from the Little Leaf Company, glued down with watered down modpodge matt.

I am also improving an old Hornby brakedown crane as a project for the big layout so it left me with bits and bobs that would have been thrown in the bin otherwise, so I used them on here.

Old axles from the crane                                                                                          Random widget??

Rooted in the scrap box, found part of a wills varigirder pack I had made up, so weathered it a little (it needs a little more) and tossed a load of grass clumps down as if it had been there a while.

As this is a scrapyard I wanted to have bits of scrap and stuff lying round, so again I raided the scrap box, and the old crane project.

The far right is a removeable wagon load which needs a bit more spoil in there too.

I also got a sand tippler from the Statfold show last weekend, which I have started weathering.

Just washes for the outside, I don't fancy braking the airbrush out currently, and powders inside to indicate the level of use its had.

Your layout is looking great! Yes it was my box file Bleak Moor Quarry in The Dispatch. I’ll be really interested to see the finished result.

I liked a lot in The Dispatch, but as soon as I saw yours It just took my my breath away, and it got my creative juices flowing, so thank you.

Last night there was some unscrupulous goings on at the yard.

IMG_20220418_220642.jpg.f28a4bceaa544c984d50929e08c3e449.jpg

To be fair that is an SMD which requires 2.3v to 3.5v to run and its only running off a 3v battery pack so I think its giving off a lot of light considering.

I have spent a bit of time before work adding some powders and pigmets to the layout to give it a more used and lived in look.

Most are from the MIG range but also the Humbrol stuff too.
I've aimed for the usual track marks where vehicles and people would likely walk the muck, and added rust, soot, soil, rubble, to the track area to indicate where unloading would happen, and where they may have had random bits of scrap dust fall out of the wagons when being unloaded.

Very atmospheric that night time shot. The pigments you have applied definitely give the layout that look of being used and busy. 👍

Thank you, its been an enjoyable build, still lots of tweeks to do and add (as there always is)

A busy little morning today.

I painted up these 2 little Modelu figures I had leftover from another project last year.

IMG_20220421_145835.jpg.12f112b8673eb7dcb767b2f0ac46ba4a.jpgIMG_20220421_145843.jpg.4aa13487e62da9fef4f7e9b51ef4dda6.jpg

We have a (now 1 leg amputated) driver in the Ruston, and a fella (formerly a shunter I believe) admiring a pile of scrap at the rear by the lean to shed.

The Ruston was formerly R3706 Army 802 War Department, the story goes that after the war the loco was surplus to requirements so was sold on to private ownership, being renumbered into 4 as it was their 4th loco which sadly then passed into the hands of the reprobate owners of ScrapNook who have neglected the poor old girl who is in a bit of a need of some TLC now.

IMG_20220421_132950.jpg.2f60e2f67deadaaf0ac5dfe28cc8306b.jpg

I fitted a stay alive unit to the loco last year, following a guide in the December 2019 issue of Hornby Magazine (Issue 150) which means I have been able to run this little tiny thing (half the size of an 08 loco) without the extra pickups provided by the match truck.
Said match truck will now be fitted with couplings on both ends, and be used on the shunting puzzle that is ScrapNook maybe with an old car engine rusting away on top.

I weathered the Ruston using a stiff brush and following a technique I've used before, stipple drybrush onto the bodywork the Lime Green ( 70.827) by Vallejo, for the cab roof I applied a slightly heavier stipple drybrush Black Grey (71.055) by Vallejo which I also used on the lower black portions.

The next step was to use a thinned down black enamel wash to flow into the shut lines and recesses, this is my favourite bit of weathering to be honest, it can elevate a sparkling clean model into something used but not abused as everything gets a little dirty.

I'm really pleased that the Micro Model Railway Dispatch is influencing other modellers.

This layout is looking great!

When you get this little layout finished pleased email me (MMRDeditor@gmail.com) and we'll see about featuring it in a forthcoming issue.

The Dispatch really did inspire me, really got my mojo back because of it.
Thank you I will

More nice railway modelling. Those little Rustons do look great on micro layouts like this one.

Little stunners arent they.
I had a W4 peckett in 2020, sold it on as I wasnt getting much use out of it, something I have come to regret.

Another one to this club. Sold my GrantRail one for a big profit (as I fitted a load to the match wagon & customised it) but regret selling it now especially given the RRP! 😄

Oh for sure, my little W4 peckett cost me £60 2nd hand, due to it missing its whistle, but I sold it and now that one is out of current production.
